Here's the Win64 release candidate http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-64bit/Scid%20vs%20PC-4.12.x64.exe/download It includes the new (and untested) fast database open feature which is missing from the win32 build. Note - after file open, there is still a pause as the Name counts are recalculated. This check can be skipped using "-fast" command line option (mainline Scid does now skip it by default), but i dont recommend this. S. |

If there's no major problems with these, i'll update the links/etc in a few days, and maybe we'll have a windows 64 exe by then too. Thanks, Steven Mac - http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/mac/ScidvsMac-4.12.dmg/download Windows 32 - http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows/Scid%20vs%20PC-4.12.exe/download Source/Linux - http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/source/scid_vs_pc-4.12.tgz/download Changes (against 4.11) Scid vs. PC 4.12: ------------------------------------------------------- Gamelist/Filter fixes. Filter works better with Tree. New Crosstable tie-break options and reorder Crosstable menus. Game-result is now shown alongside Player names, at top of GameInfo window. Middle button in main board toggles game info. Databases open faster (Linux/OS X only - "avoid the time consuming file locking". Windows is in testing). Allow dragging Docked Window tabs to alter their order. Gamelist button/menu changes: Flag button is now context menu, Gamelist Save is moved to tools->export, Find button removed (use enter in Find entrybox) Spelling changes: Update spelling file to a custom version of Franz's Jan-5-2014 spellling.ssp. Spell-checking can now remove GM, IM, FM, CM, WGM prefixes from player names. Doing player-name replacements, show how many fail due to age/date considerations. FICS changes: Add user-configurable init commands. Board size slider is now a menu. Game Offers pack over buttons (making it less crowded, use escape/button-2 to cancel). New find entrybox to search the console. Remove Clear button (as getting crowded). Remove the never used big clocks. Add start, end sounds (and minor sound fixes - though still buggy). Dont save FICS aborted games. Disable engines when playing a FICS game. Analysis and Annotation changes: Make 'scoreToMate' work better and faster, which stops occasional incorrect Mate-in-N lines showing up, and works better at near-mate positions. Make the Annotation config window fit on small displays. Stop engine at end of annotating a single game. Try a new approach to Depth-based annotation, which works better, but still needs fine-tuning. Spanish translation update from Igor Sosa Mayor. Polish translation update from Adam Umiastowski. Add a find entrybox to the splash window Strip PGN Tags improvements Right-clicking toolbar Game-Save icon quick saves game. Sound devices can now be selected; mainly useful for Linux systems Dont insert newlines into PGN copied to text buffer... Some web PGN browsers don't work with newlines following movenum. eg "10. Nxc3" Save game history when Scid quits Remove tree status bar. Same info avail in switcher and tree text widget. Booktuning nextmove is now highlighted (same as Book), and padding has been tweaked a bit. Move Maintenance menu from File to Tools menu Remove the annoying " from myPlayerNames. Bugfixes: When saving PGN to file, disable translating pieces. (Export to PGN was already this way). FICS Digital clocks didnt appear under some circumstances Undo/redo refinement/fix for when buffer has been full Fix import issue - Sometimes first tag is lost (If UTF byte order mark is present) MSWindows - Board keyboard bindings are were getting lost after Variation window popup is dismissed. Some tooltip refinements, including removing tooltips with board update (mask tooltips were erroneously persistent). Tablebase window: Results Board was not getting packed (is now below Results Frame). Change the damn awful red, update help, give tbWin the widest paned window. With wish8.6, we cant close undocked windows with a Close button. Fix Some fixes for javascript and html game exports Correctly handle plain text crosstables. |

It happens on Windows in docked mode after selecting the variation number. I don't normally press enter - should I? Date: Thu, 6 Mar 2014 07:16:10 +0000 From: a.c...@gm... To: sci...@li... Hi all, one thing I really enjoy when going over my games is being able to cycle through variations using 'v' followed by the variation number (0-9). What irritates me though, is that after selecting a variation, I have to select the PGN window with the mouse in order for the arrow keys to work again. I wrote a little code to toggle the Gameinfo window with the middle mouse button. Of course, it was hideable before, but now when hidden the status bar is padded somewhat and converted to show a small "White -- Black (result)" below the main board, so make sure statusbar is not hidden. (see attached pic). NB Gamelist also has hideable info with middle button click. It is quite usable :) but because i have converted the statusbar for a little label, it is quirky too when entering moves, and perhaps i'll have to tweak it some more. I've made a couple of changes to the HTML export, and am just letting others know because i am not super familiar this feature. In frames 1 and 2 of the attached pic you can see a change i have made to COLUMN mode of html export. Previosuly, comments are placed below move, making the White and Black moves appear on slightly different lines. In frame 2 one can see the change i have made. (For cosmetic reasons I would prefer to use () instead of {} for bracketing comments, but PGN necessitates {}) The third frame shows "16. ..." after the diagram in the html/javascript output. This is new ((previously, black moves trailing diagrams have no ". ...") and is a straight forward bug-fix i believe. Mainly, i'd just like to check that these changes don't break any other export feature. NB - the javascript fix is to scid.gui, while the pure html change is to the C++ backend, necessitating a recompile. cheers, Steve |

I'd like to request the ability to set different colors for different variation levels/branches in the pgn window. Chess Assistant and Aquarium do this and it looks really cool. I find it helps me keep things straight when there is a mess of variations. I'm attaching a screenshot to show what I mean. Obviously this is nothing urgent, just an idea. Thanks. John |

I've put up a windows 32 bit beta for people to test the new stuff. I've tested this on OS X and Linux much more than Windows though, so hopefully it's ok. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-beta/scidvspc_20140216.zip/download Recent changes include * Allow reordering of docked window tabs with drag and drop * Allow removal of "GM ", "IM " prefixes via the player spellchecker (you'll need the new spelling.ssp from here -) https://sourceforge.net/p/scidvspc/code/HEAD/tree/spelling.ssp?format=raw * new approach to Depth-based engine analysis (probably still bugs), and Stop analysis at end of annotating a single game * Make 'scoreToMate' work better and faster * Game history persists between sessions * Some filter bug-fixes for when copying games in the switcher. * Booktuning nextmove is now highlighted, and widget is padded tighter. * Bug fix for wish8.6 with undocked windows (thanks to Enrico for finding this, and driving me crazy in the process :>) * Undo/redo refinement/fix for when buffer has been full * Some sound restructure - still not great though. * Disable engines when playing a FICS game. * pgn export tweaks (piece translations shouldnt be exported) Steve |

Well, that's something i'd never seen before :) The scid.eco doco is a little errant, so i will fix that up, but the script is eco2pgn.py, it is in the source scripts directory. There does exist a eco2epd make target, which is also interesting. The output files from both these scripts are attached. One thing thats been on my mind is how best to export the end positions of games in a database to epd. Does anyone know to do this, without writing a custom tcscid script ? S. Hi Steve, I stumbled upon the scid.eco file which states that it can be converted to pgn by eco2pgn, which sounds very cool and useful to visually review the ECO. However, I was not able to find the source for eco2pgn anywhere in the distribution files. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks! |

Hi, this behaviour is only when the option "Options -> Moves -> Translate Pieces" ist ticked "on". (Optionen -> Züge -> Figurenamen übersetzen) So the moves in the moves-list appear in the same language as triggered in "Options -> Language". A simple workaround to that for now is to untick the "Translate Pieces" option. The solutions to this ist so make sure that the pgn-File ist always saved as a compliant pgn-file in "english" -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen Stefan Garbelmann mailto:ste...@gm... |

Also want to say THANK YOU --- for that current enhancement and generally to that great chess program Scid vs PC! My aim is to use only this program in the future - I tried a lot of different chess programs, and most were ok, but always something missing. Scid vs PC has got all the functionality now and is very good in use nevertheless... And with some additional tooltip / explanation now at some icon it's absolutely perfect... :-) On Mon, 3 Feb 2014 09:13:44 +0100 Igor Sosa Mayor <jos...@gm...> wrote: >> :) :) >> >> thankss!!! ;-) >> |

Ok. Had a good think about this. I'm not keen to adding tooltips to the button bar in any fashion. Implementing a right-click "What's This" tooltip is hard, but maybe i will do it, otherwise i will include a "Button Bar" link in the help index. The button bar is already in Help under "Index->Main Window") I will add tooltips to the tree buttons too. Hi Igor, I was only speaking of the buttons of the mainbar, because I thought, all other buttons already have got mouse-over-info's. In the analysis windows, there are all the mouse-overs already now (I use 4.11, linux version). But you are right, in the tree window in the left corner below there is also no mouse over at those two buttons. Remark: I rename subject of this emails now... First issue already got solved. Hi Steve, thanks - another icon would be quite good, I guess. Doesn't seem that you already are convinced to create mouse-over-info's there additionally... ;-( I can see that a little bit... too many mouse-overs etc could became the same pain like the HTML-<blink>-tag got sometime... And I agree that the most buttons of the main toolbar are self-explaining definitely, that's why no mouse-over needed there, yes. Two exceptions: - the button we were currentyl speaking, "raise all windows" - the button "start/stop trial-mode"... without help-menu rather mouse-over at origin scid-program, I never had guessed what that button can be used for What about following idea: - interchange the button "start/stop trial-mode" with the button "rotate board" - after that at the rigth side there are the trail-mode-button and the raise-windows-button - that are quite special functions, that are worth to get a mouse over - all other icons are self-explanining and don't need a mouse over Best Regards, Frank On Tue, 28 Jan 2014 19:52:02 +1000 Steve A <stevenaaus@...> wrote: >> Hmmm.... >> The function of that button is to "raise all windows" and is mainly >> used in non-docked mode, >> The two rectangles dont quite look like windows, so maybe another >> icon would be better. >> S. |

You need a ECO file with normally is distributed (I think) with scidvspc. The name is scid.eco. But you must tell Scid_vs_pc where the file is: Options-> Load ECO file. |
