I believe that most people use Eclipse as their IDE. Myself? I still use 'vi' and then 'ant' to build everything -- this is either from my Mac and Linux machines. But then I am not making many modifications to the code but rather trying to create new game titles via small changes. Now what is missing is an overall view of what the various files do and what helper programs have been created. I was working on such a document but, alas, despite the winter weather I have not had time to follow through on said document. Of course if you see a need for a FAQ then by all means create one and submit it. -- Rick Westerman wes...@pu... Bioinformatics specialist at the Genomics Facility. It would help if there were a FAQ about how to set up a build environment compatible with the code (so I can test my ideas before submitting them). Check-in is a secondary consideration; I assume once I have code working there will be someone willing to check it in from a "diff" or the like. |

I am piecemeal adding the 1835 specialities. Buying and selling of different share sizes (10%/20% resp. 5%/10%) should now work. The selling prompt messages have been clarified by adding more detail, as follows: If you own 1 20% and 2 10% shares of the Badische, the selection menu did offer: Sell 10% shares of Bad for 100M Sell 20% shares of Bad for 200M Sell 20% shares of Bad for 200M This now will read: Sell 1 10% share(s) (10%) of Bad for 100M Sell 2 10% share(s) (20%) of Bad for 200M Sell 1 20% share(s) (20%) of Bad for 200M This change of message format applies to all games. I have also prepared the following: 1. Ability to exclude companies (i.e. 1835 minors) from using special properties, by adding a <UseSpecialProperties\> tag to the traintypes that can do so (this applies to all implemented games except 1851 and 18EU). 2. Calculation of the hex distance "as a crow without passport flies" to calculate base token lay cost. This is not yet used to avoid interference with work that Stefan Frey is currently doing (I already disturbed him once). Erik. |

I have fixed the nagging problem in 1835 that after the green Berlin tile #209 was laid, most of Eastern Germany disappeared. This turned out to be caused by buggy code to detect the need to display home markers (off if a token is present). Somehow (I can't explain why) the presence of two home tokens (M2 and M5) in one city disrupted painting. In some other games, a spurious home marker was displayed even if a token was present (I have seen this in 1856 and 18EU, always in multi-city tiles). That had the same cause and has also been fixed. I have started to pick up 1835. To enable the extra NF token lay at the start of an OR (which is so neat for the Bayerische), quite some code changes were needed. In fact I have done more than that - also tried to enable some possibilities for special properties that can be exercised "at any time", even though not all of these are already used. Testing of some complex cases have shown no side effects, but whoever runs from the code base should be aware of potential new glitches. I'll do some more testing tomorrow. Erik. |

It's fairly simple. Download the package, unzip/untar it, then run either the OS-appropriate start-up script, or execute the jar file directly. Though, if you'd like to write up some formal documentation, I'll publish it. :-) ---Brett. Well, I have "fixed" this "bug" now (commit to follow later today). Please beware: any saved files in which the immediate-sell-the-excess rule has been disobeyed will no longer load past that point! I have also fixed the 1835 problem reported by some people, that the program hung when not the whole start packet got sold in the initial round. And added the city names to the home and destination hex info. It's not just 4s that can be upgraded, it's 5s and 6s also (same in 1856). In 1830, the sale of the first Diesel should blow up the 4-trains, so technically only the first exchange is possible. Nobody but the first company to exchange will have an opportunity to hit their Buy Trains phase before their 4-trains blow up. However, you're both correct. It's not that it's a limit of 1 exchange, it's a timing of the sequences that causes the net effect to be what it is. ---Brett. Well, that was my point, we have things which rails does currently enforce and things which it doesn't, I was trying to work out which this was before saying rails is broken ;) >From Erik's mail I'm guessing we don't have checks to enforce selling back into legality when your turn comes round implemented yet, so I think this could happily stay on the 'nice to haves' rather than the 'broken' pile :) On 4 February 2010 22:31, Erik Vos <eri...@xs...> wrote: > Well, I'd rather call it a not-yet-implemented nice-to-have feature... > (And you're still free to follow the rules as printed ;-) > > Guess it's time to pay some attention to this oh-that-can-be-done-later-ed > and then forgotten hole. > > Erik. > > -----Original Message----- > From: brett lentz [mailto:wak...@gm...] > Sent: Thursday 04 February 2010 18:19 > To: Development list for Rails: an 18xx game > Subject: Re: [Rails-devel] Selling back down to cert limit > > On Thu, Feb 4, 2010 at 9:14 AM, Phil Davies <de...@gm...> wrote: >> Wanted to get peoples opinions before I state this as a bug. Well, I'd rather call it a not-yet-implemented nice-to-have feature... Hmm, I had always thought that only the first Diesel could be exchanged for a lesser train, but after rereading the rules I must conclude that I was misguided. Subject: [Rails-commits] upgrade / file versioning The new Info in the Rails 1.1.3 update looks great. However, the first time I tried to save with 1.1.3, no 1.1.2 players could read my game file- so I had to switch back to 1.1.2. Was this happenstance, as to be expected sometimes- or, is there a major file version upgrade implicit in 1.1.3? |

To avoid any possible duplication I decided to prefix the tiles for 1889 with 89 and then followed with 3 digits to follow. Those digits should mirror a number of an existing tile which is similar to the tile used. But I have to add the tiles for 18Scan and this approach does not work anymore. [EV] Two of your tiles has 6 digits, I have removed a spurious 0 from these two. - A 5 or 6digit number is assigned to preprinted tiles which are not yet created. 5 digits for 18xx titles: xx000-xx999. 6 digits for 18ABC titles, that are mapped to a list of 3digits prefix.: yyy000-yyy999 E.g.: 18AL: 100 18Scan: 101 (and other titles to follow) Or do you think those numbers are too long and better choose (randomly) a shorter one of those not already in use by Rails? [EV] I'd propose to keep it at 5 maximum, and use only 2 trailing digits per game. There aren't that many special preprinted tiles. Let's say xx000-xx099 and yyy00-yyy99 where the third y must be >0. Should have written a script! Anyway putting the PDFs inside the repository (as well as the script) would be a good idea. I would suggest the 'tools' directory. -- Rick Westerman wes...@pu... |

I have generalized Info/Privates to Info/Companies, now covering all types. The info displayed has also been extended. 1830 and 1835 are mostly done, other games remain to be done (volunteers?) Erik. |

There was some recent discussions on tiles and I would like to follow up after creating the additional tiles for two games now: A) Tile numbering There are outside sources for the numbers that are used on the board. And even if people might not be happy about the system (or better the absence of a system), that is already covered. But Rails needs identifiers for the preprinted tiles, that are not available in the databases. Those are the negative tile ids (and in this case negative includes the zero). Unfortunately I was not able to find a systematic numbering in the current set of preprinted tiles, maybe I was not clever enough. To avoid any possible duplication I decided to prefix the tiles for 1889 with 89 and then followed with 3 digits to follow. Those digits should mirror a number of an existing tile which is similar to the tile used. But I have to add the tiles for 18Scan and this approach does not work anymore. Thus I reconsider my approach and suggest the following for preprinted tile numbers: - Gray tiles that are identical to existing tiles should receive the identical number, only negative (this covers -1 to -9999). (I know that this is not always possible as a few numbers are already in use for other tiles.) - A 5 or 6digit number is assigned to preprinted tiles which are not yet created. B) Tile database To get an overview of all existing tiles in Rail, I created two pdf documents that contain thumbnails of all preprinted and layable tiles in numerical order. If anyone is interested in a copy of those (filesize around 12MB), just drop me an e-mail. If there is a good place inside the repository, I can add the bash-script to create those on the fly as well. Stefan |

After some more googling, I see why. "git pull" is synonymous with "git fetch && git merge". In plain english, "Fetch remote changesets, and update the database. Then, if that succeeds, update the local working copy with the updated changes." Egit didn't have a merge algorithm implemented yet. However, I found this: http://egit.eclipse.org/r/#change,140 Looks like they've finally gotten a merge algorithm implemented, which means 'git pull' is probably going to show up in the next version or two. Awesome. I'm not planning on doing the migrations _today_, so we can take our time testing out eGit and see if they can get the feature added sometime in the next month or two. ---Brett. |
