I've finished adding the remaining beta tasks to the tracker. If you think there's something missing, just add it to the tracker and assign it to me, and I'll review it before assigning it to the beta, 1.0 release, or feature requests. All alpha tasks have been finished! So, I'll be introducing the alpha test at my club here in Pasadena, CA, on Wednesday. Wish me luck! I did end up fudging a little on the time zone support. All times are assumed to be PST right now. In effect, if you can ignore the "PST" designator and pretend that all games are in your own time zone, you should be ok, but we'll need to clean up time zones a bit in the beta. Speaking of the beta, I have added about half of the items I know I want included in the beta as of now. Feel free to start picking up items from the beta. Currently I'm thinking that I'll do about 1 release a month until we get to the beta milestone, so any beta tasks completed during that time will go into the alpha test at the next release. This isn't written in stone, and I may open up the alpha to a wider audience if I can't get enough usage from the local club. Thanks, Adam Ulvi, for your help getting us to the alpha! Hopefully once we get a little more exposure we can pick up a few more developers and proceed a little more swiftly towards the beta. :-) -Alf |

Oops, I do have a lot of items for the beta, but I don't have them up on the SF site yet! I promise I'll get on that this week! -Alf On Dec 2, 2007 12:43 PM, Alf Mikula <am...@gm...> wrote: > No problem...we're doing the Christmas tree today. :-) > > I'll re-assign that one to myself when I'm ready to start working on it, > hopefully tomorrow morning. No problem...we're doing the Christmas tree today. :-) I'll re-assign that one to myself when I'm ready to start working on it, hopefully tomorrow morning. I've got some momentum going on the TZ stuff right now, and I think it's important enough to squeeze it into the alpha. If/when you have time to get back into the project, you can go ahead and start looking at the beta items. Alf,
Go ahead and bang it out, you've got a much better idea of what you want anyways :-) I had hoped to find time to work on it this weekend but it never materialized.. but I did get the xmas tree up.

I've got good news: there's only one item left in the alpha group! I'm going to go ahead and take some time looking at time zone issues, which wasn't originally scheduled for the alpha, but now that we have a hosting provider in EST, I'm starting to see that it could become an issue.
Adam, let me know if you want me to take over that last ticket...I'd like to get it wrapped up in the next couple of days.
Thanks,
-Alf

I've checked in an update to the geocoder jar, turning Geolocation from a class to an interface. You'll need to do an update on your geocoder directory, followed by a mvn install there, before next updating your promotego directory. -Alf |

It's just a warning, not a hard error so I'm not bothering with it. I'm building just fine and submitting patches, I've been using unix-like OSs to worry much about warning messages ;-)

Adam also mentioned this warning in an email to me today, and I remembered seeing it here...I get that error too. I think it's a warning from Maven about not finding the expected dependency version. It could probably be fixed by updating the versions of dependencies in the
pom.xml, but I don't think it's causing any problems.

James, After messing around with the netbeans-freeform plugin and getting very unsatisfying results (not to mention, it looks like it hasn't been updated in a while), I looked around a bit more and found the mevenide plugin. It seems to be picking up the right dependencies, including the servlet jar, on Netbeans 5.5. See here for installation instructions: http://mevenide.codehaus.org/m2-site/mevenide2-netbeans/installation.html -Alf On Nov 21, 2007 7:36 PM, James Funk <fun...@de...> wrote: > It looks like when NetBeans is using the edit window, it is using a > different > JDK than in the build scripts. It looks like when NetBeans is using the edit window, it is using a different JDK than in the build scripts. The one used in the edit window is probably missing some files. I did some client/server crap for palm pilots back when those were still in use, but other than that, no. I just really hate the way my phone works and want something better. Hacker, write it thyself.
I'll try to bang out the javascript junk tonite, shouldn't take too long. Sorry for the delay. :-)

For something as trivial as making sure the user checked a box, I think JavaScript is fine.
I haven't heard much about Android...do you do much mobile device development?

The item I -should- be working on is the addition of a check box to have a game offerer acknowledge that they are responsible for bringing playing equipment. This can be done a couple of different ways and I'd like to know which you would prefer. The easiest way (for me) is just to use javascript to perform the validation, but I do understand that Spring has form validation as well, but I am not familiar with it. I'm cool with doing it either way, let me know which you would prefer and I'll bang it out (or pick your brain ;-)
After Thanksgiving I should have more time to devote to coding. I do have to admit that I've also
been distracted by Google Android, but that's not hard. I was looking into OpenMoko before, but Android seems far more mature right out of the gate.
Thanks!

I'm finally making some progress towards that alpha test! There's only one feature request and 5 outstanding bugs to go before alpha testing can begin!
This list is really quiet...if you don't have time to work on the project for now, that's absolutely ok with me. I just want to check in and see if there's anything hindering your progress? Is the code particularly difficult to decipher? Do you need help making design decisions? Please let me know. I'd rather spend my time getting you up to speed in the short run so that we can all enjoy better progress in the long run.

I've had a lot of weird UI issues with Netbeans. If the project builds OK I would just roll with it. My NB6 does crap like that all the time. I did some client/server crap for palm pilots back when those were still in use, but other than that, no. I just really hate the way my phone works and want something better. Hacker, write it thyself.
I'll try to bang out the javascript junk tonite, shouldn't take too long. Sorry for the delay. :-)

Hey folks, I've moved the hosting over to geekisp.com (I did have it over at eatj.com, but they were unstable and had weird session effects). Now, your sessions won't get killed in the middle of a normal session. Theoretically, they'll only get killed after an hour of inactivity, but I've only tested that the 5-minute idle period that always timed out over at eatj.com is now a safe idle period, and you don't get logged out. I also closed the bug for hours not being entered. Now you'll get a warning message when scheduling a game if the hours are not known for the site. James, I also fixed the bug that was causing 12am-12am not to come out as a 24-hour period. Well, that's a couple of big ones out of the way! We creep ever closer to that alpha test coming up. :-) Please let me know if you see any evidence of regression. -Alf |

In my experience, applets tend to be slow to load, and lead to a clunky experience for a lot of users. I think we can address this with DHTML in a way that would be a pretty smooth experience. What's a Japplet? I've never heard that word before. -Alf On Nov 13, 2007 5:03 PM, James Funk <fun...@de...> wrote: > A Java applet might not require browser plug ins. Assuming you want to include the functionality, I think JS is the best tool for the job. Anything else (applets, flash, silverlight) all require browser plug-ins. That's not to say that JS is great for cross-browser programming, lord knows I spent enough time with "dhtml" back in the Netscape 4.x days hating all rendering engines. However, this should be fairly straightforward on current browsers. If someone wants to write it up as a bug/feature, feel free to assign it to me and I'll work on it when I get sick of staring at Java. As one edits the times for Monday, the times are copied into Tuesday through Friday areas. How would it behave if the user wanted different Mon-Fri times? After the time for Monday is entered, the user would be able to edit the other times. This could be a problem if the user realized he/she made an error on the Monday time. How about a check box that says "Same as Monday" for Tues to Fri? By the way, I don't know Java Script. I don't know if you or Adam does. > 2) Same, but use an applet. I'd like to avoid applets as much as possible. > 3) Allow the user to just type in the times. This would necessitate adding logic to check that the times entered are valid. This suggestion (3) can be combined with (1) xor (2). Hmmm...well, #1 is my favorite of these three, but maybe we can do a little better. I don't think we have to completely solve this for alpha, just decide between: 1. Leave it as-is, but allow the users to leave blank and have unenforced hours. 2. Yank the functionality for alpha so we don't intimidate people. I agree. It is too early to spend a lot of time on this. > Another suggestion: If a location is known to have a website, it might help to have a link (URI) to the website. Good idea. Would you capture this as a "bug" report? > Another "long range" comment about hours: (I doubt that this is likely to happen at a place where people might play go, but I'll mention it anyway.) It is possible that a location needs more than one set of hours on some days. Some locations might have a staff so small that they have to close during part of the day. (This is actually the case for some pharmacies here.) The hours look something like this: > > Monday to Friday: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., 12 N to 4 p.m.; (The pharmacist has lunch between 11 and noon.) The hours object does support this, though the UI doesn't. We can add it later, once we work out the UI challenges. -Alf ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
