The /Palm/Launcher may tend to get crowded, especially if you have several databases and other programs that use it. The reference to "Palm specific files" things is primarily for the "Standard" palm application. It would be better to use /PALM/Pilot-db to reduce clutter and improve response time. But then again, it might not be too difficult to put the loaction into the Global Preferences for DB so that you could choose for yourself. Or even have multiple directories for the "database junkies" --- Tom Dyas <td...@us...> wrote: > On Monday 28 January 2002 03:04 am, Chalain Marc wrote: > > > Where i put the databases on an extension card? in > "PALM/Launcher" like > > now or in "PALM/pilot-db"? > > > Palm seems to standardize on /PALM/Launcher for Palm-specific > files. On Monday 28 January 2002 03:04 am, Chalain Marc wrote: > Where i put the databases on an extension card? in "PALM/Launcher" like > now or in "PALM/pilot-db"? Palm seems to standardize on /PALM/Launcher for Palm-specific files. Other directories are only used for images and audio and not a Palm-specific database like DB. The Web site that described it was: http://www.palmos.com/dev/support/docs/palmos/ExpAndVFSConcepts.html |

I just installed the latest beta from sf and find that the global search no longer works. I checked the setting in global perfs and it was check. Then I unchecked it and tried to recheck it but was unable to. The other options under global perfs work but for some reason "Enable global find support" does not. Marc, I posted this bug on the bug tracker but thought I would post it here also to see if anyone else is having this problem. I'm using V. 3.4 beta 4c on a Visor Delux Palm OS 3.1H2 Error message Memory mgr New. C Line: 4183, Invalid Chunk ptr. Happens when I exit the program and calls for a rest. This is a great program thanks for all the work you are doing. Don from Nebraska |

Perhaps you can keep trace of the db internal formats in the Changelog file ? Fab. |

There is still a problem in the db-en-light.prc beta 4 version. It is likely to crash your palm on when you open a database. Use the db-en.prc I am uploading a fixed version. -Scott |

Also as a default db does not backup the databases. You have to select thi= s for every database. If you lose one on the handheld and you don't have i= t backed up. It's gone. This is a great idea, and should ensure that you never loose important data when you test out a new version. At the very least, make sure you do a full backup in case any files get corrupted. A problem with the integer function. When I enter a 6 digit number, instead of the number listed, e.g. 123456, I get 2147483647. |

a) I'm on a Mac, and *no* downloaded database (.PDB) has ever installed properly for me. They are always unreadable by the DB app. The only way to use databases is to create them on the handheld -- but as I discovered after a crash, even these cannot be sync'd back in after a crash and be readable. In summary: once they go through HotSync, they effectively become useless. b) The plugin DB3-vfs.prc crashes my Handspring Visor Prism, OS version 3.5.2H1.5. |

> Is there progress being made towards DB returning to being a pretty > stable application? When I test a new beta I do some simple actions to get back to the stable release. Today stable release is 0.3.3 which doesn't handle calculated fields. So, I only have one db for test (named Test :-) which holds all new types. Other dbs are real life ones with my data. When I get a new beta, I do a full backup. Then install the new beta version, and play with it with only the test db. I never try to open real life databases. I just accept to link to them with "link" or "linked" types. During the runs, I write down problems to report on the list, trying to find systematic ways of reproducing fancy behaviours. After playing around with features I reinstall stable release. With recent ones I also reinstalled the pdb which holds categories, to make sure :-) Doing so I can test new betas, see the power of new features, give my advice on some implementation choices, preserve my databases and get a functionning program back for the next real day :-) Don't forget, betas are unstable versions made to get all the power of multi-testers phase. You can't hope them to be fully functionnal. That's the way it goes. For your problems, my advice is : make a full backup of your device, labeled "BadSatge" or something like that. Then, delete all DB databases, DB program and DB related databases, either whith the sync processor (better if your device still works a little) whith a program like filez (freeware, see palmgear). Then reinstall the stable version and then databases one after another, trying them after each install. HTH. Fab. |
