'tool' doesn't really add any information about what the program does, 'converter' might be better, or you could just drop it all together and get something like 'qdb' > Which exetension i will use to store the database informations (very > important!)? (pilot-db-desktop.exe, > pilot-DB.exe, DB.exe...) What is the normal naming convention for tools built with KDE/Qt? I have never used any, so I don't have any idea. I would not call it a name with just pilot-db or db as the name; there should be something in the name that indicates that it is not the palmos side. > Which exetension i will use to store the database informations (very > important!)? (*.ifo, *.pdt, *.db ....) I think that .csv (raw data), .ifo (metadata), and .pdb (resulting DB file) should be the extensions. What about extensions for the DB filters? -- Never apply a Star Trek solution to a Babylon 5 problem. Larry W. i work on palm db tools. Now i have a graphics tools that works on Linux and can be build under Windows and Mac. For the informations i use QT a multiplatform graphic tool kit that used with KDE (a Linux Desktop). The current name is: qpalm_db_tool, use *.ifo file to store the database informations and *.csv file to store database data. Waht name i will give to the application? (pilot-db-desktop.exe, pilot-DB.exe, DB.exe...) Which exetension i will use to store the database informations (very important!)? (*.ifo, *.pdt, *.db ....) I'm waiting your point of view. I build a Windows version when i will find a Windows box. Salut, Marc. |

I think it was related with the DBDatabase.pdb file : when I changed the first time from 0.3.3d to 0.3.4 I lost the categories infos. Then I reinstalled 0.3.3d and a few days after tried the new 0.3.4. I got the same behaviour but this time I didn't recreate the missing informations. So I played with a desynchronized (in some way) DBDatabase.pdb and DB.prc. I got the problem. Now that I have deleted and recreate the DBDatabase.pdb it seems ok. Can't tell you more, I keep studying the case :-) The second one is not currently reproducible (Don't know the right word : I can't reproduce it). Also any details about when or how db fails are extremely important. If you can cut down the time we spend trying to reproduce an error, we have a lot more time to spend going about fixing it. I have taken care of the last record error in the list view, and some (I believe all) of the problems with global search, but I don't really know any of the details behind the other errors you mention. The following is a suggestion for the Pilot DB documentation. It would seem to be the case that it is critical that the last line of the metadata file and the last line of the data file each end with a line break. If either condition is not met, you get the error message "data.csv:n: number of fields doesn't match", where data.csv is the name of the data file, and n is either 1 if the problem is with the metadata file, or the number of lines in the data file, if the problem is with the last file. =20 Apparently without a final line break in the metadata file, the program doesn't recognize the last line, and is therefore looking for one field fewer than it should be. Similarly, without a final line break in the data file, it is not able to correctly count the number of fields on that line. Unfortunately, figuring out the problem from the error message is not at all obvious, and can make it very difficult to get the program up and running with your data. I would suggest at least incorporating this information into program documentation. =20 George Schneiderman |

Sorry, can't > tell you more. Hmm. I just took a look at MegaWiki. It seems rather complicated, and the manual is pretty hard to follow, but it looks useful too. I installed it on the emulator, and had no problem jumping into the memo pad. Of course, you have to be able to edit the field for the click perform the action. I can also jump into a record in DB, but I had to recompile to ensure that Global Find was on, and I had to set the global preference in DB to make sure that Global Find would be used. I thought of a kind of duplication of structure, but you're right, it wouldn't be worth the trouble especially if we can store the sort criteria in a next version (I think Marc said he has planned that) and the good one can be triggered after recalculations. > However, I am planning to add a script that can be run each time a list > view is displayed, this could take care of default sorting and flitering, > so that might help somewhat. Yes it will. Will we be able to trigger the recomputations in this script (to get auto-recompute on a per-database basis) ? Wow ! It opens a lot of things : filter on special records containing grouping informations calculated and displayed alone on a screen. I already see how it can help me in my day-to-day usage of DB... So, as I speak of wishes. I also use a very powerfull free application named megawiki witch enpower the concept of link through all the standard applications and databases. You just tap or double-tap on a wikiname or string enclosed in separators and depending of the separators or the semantic of the string, you're carried to the corresponding entry in the database (memo, date in datebook, entry in the phonebook) which is created if necessary. You have to use it to note the power and the lightweight of the solution to link all the kind of informations you can store in a handheld. But when I tap in DB, the hack is not activated. Sorry, can't tell you more. Fab. |

Hmm, unfortunately, there is no easy way to store the current sort order. So this would be pretty tough to do, and probably pretty slow. However, I am planning to add a script that can be run each time a list view is displayed, this could take care of default sorting and flitering, so that might help somewhat. -Scott > Hello. > > > Scott, I have a wish about the first part of an > inter-record formula : can you avoid modifying the vue > sort order ? Hello. Scott, I have a wish about the first part of an inter-record formula : can you avoid modifying the vue sort order ? I know it can be tricky depending of the code structure, but I have a few fields like that in a database and it's annoying to resort the vue each time the fields are recomputed. TIA. Fab. |

> a look at some of the other bugs you mentioned (I still can't get the last > record error to occur on my emulator, though...) I've found that if the screen is not filled (no scroll arrows), you can select the last record. But if the screen is full and you have to scroll to vue the last record, it is not selectable. So, I just reorder by another criteria or change the order type to get it elsewhere :-)))))))))))))))) Fab. |

Hello. I'm playing with db 0.3.4 beta 5. Here are my feedbacks. (Sorry Marc, I didn't have time to play with db-tools, it's a hard time for me work). (Palm Vx) 2 parts : NORMAL OPERATIONS and SCRIPTING AND CALCULATED FIELDS NORMAL OPERATIONS o db light still chrashes while opening a database, just after displaying the about box. o the "about" box at each db openning is very borring :-) Ok, I played it kind and installed plugin.prc. Deleted it :-) o I saw the last record bug. You can't access it but it's correctly diplayed on screen. o Still can't see the "linked" type value until the second modification of the record. o There's still the same problem with default values in "integer" and "float" types : each time you assign them, you loose the list views. You have to rebuild them from scratch. o There's still a problem with the categories. I lost all the categories informations. Categories are there but all databases are in unfilled one. o When database is openned in read-write (mode where you have to tell you're gonna modify a rcord), you can't even select a value to copy in the buffer without first getting in modify mode (I think this is so since the beginning). o Got a fatal exception when copying a database (DB type) with data and design. Then the base is duplicated but doesn't appear in the list. It reappears by rescanning databases. I remembered the problem with caterories so I deleted the DBDatabases file on the Palm. This way, I lost all categories. But the crash still happened. SCRIPTING AND CALCULATED FIELDS o Something is strange with this part of the script doc. It seems parameters fld and off are inverted... ffr <fld> <off> [d] Field - 2 or 3 arguments, the first 2 of From - which must be an integer. The first Record argument is the record offset. o I couldn't enter a long script like the one found in the doc, something like : (sort 2 1) (+ (? (seq (ffr 2 -1 na) %2) (ffr 5 -1 0) 0) %6) The input field dosn't scroll left when I get to the end of the line. Also I can cut'n paste from a db filed but I didn't found how to paste when I cut from a memo. I tried the backslash quick action access but it didn't paste anything. o For testing purpose mainly, couldn't we have a parameter to get automatic recalculations when we modify a script ? Well, that's it. Perhaps more testing later. Fab. |
