I just upgraded from 3.3.8(?) to 4.1 last night, and then from 4.1 to 4.1.1 today. The first upgrade went fine as near as I could tell, but the second upgrade caused a problem. I'm now noticing this call stack in "On this day" and "Upcoming events" infoboxes: ERROR 8: Undefined index: jd 0 Error occurred on line 1438 of file functions_print_lists.php in function print_events_table 1 called from line 223 of file todays_events.php in function print_todays_events 2 called from line 1 of file index.php(385) : eval()'d code in function eval 3 called from line 385 of file index.php I'm going to poke around in the code and see if I notice anything obvious, other than observing that this is new code in 4.1.1. I haven't yet tried reimporting my GEDCOM file, which I may do if I don't catch something obvious. Rob |

Hi folks, I have flipped the switch in my config.php to use cvs as the COMMIT_COMMAND, so what other steps are required to enable version history for the gedcom file(s)? Is this a feature that isn't fully baked yet? Thanks. -- Mike Oliver (KI4OFU) |

I generally follow these steps when 'upgrading' software on my server. 1) Make a backup of the MySQL database (if any) 2) download and unpack the new package into a directory with the version number. I.e, phpGedView4.1 3) Copy the config file, and any image or user directories from the current version to the new version. 4) Change the symlink from the old version to the new version. I.e., ln -s phpGedView4.1 phpGedView. 5) Log into the package, and run any upgrade or maintenance steps. This generally works for most software, and you can usually revert simply by changing the symlink back to the prior version. Usually once the new version is working well, you can delete the prior version. Andre Switala <sw...@gm...> wrote: Since I could not find anything in the FAQ's here is a quick question. How do I easily upgrade from one version to the other, let's say from 4.0 to 4.1 - simply upload all the new files on top of the old ones? Or is it more complicated? I tried to do the above but nothing seemed to work anymore, so I had to do a complete new install. I think it would be good to address this in the FAQ, Installation guide and/or the wiki. Hi all -- I followed the instructions in the sample custom welcome menu file in the themes directory and got it partially working. However, the last menu item does not display. I also was hoping to avoid the pull down menus if possible so the user would have all the choices on screen whether or not the mouse is hovering over the welcome text. Could someone go to www.eavesfamily.org/pgv/ and pull down the welcome menu? There should be 5 links, not 4. Any pointers appreciated. TIA --le |

I am looking over the seemingly very well organized code in phpgedview in hopes of finding the best place to modify the header block to include personalized links for my site. To speed the process, could someone more familiar with this code please point me to a particular file or function where this is best done? I want to add links after the link where it says ""Welcome Page". You might understandably tell me to do a search on the source, but I don't know how best to do this on windows and don't have access to a unix system where I can grep for text. I would like to insert 4 links to other sites related to mine. Any useful pointers are much appreciated. Hello all -- I have my site working now and have a question about modifying the navigation links at the top of each page. I want to add a list of links at the top of each page, and maybe remove the language selection box as this particular group of people only has English genealogy. I have been walking through index.php and also looking at the themes folder at the header and footer stuff, but I just wanted to query the list for pointers to speed the process as I am not familiar with the code. It seems adding links would be a common ned of pgv users so I'm sure others have done it. Please let me know. Thanks much in advance! Things are working great otherwise! Thanks to the developers for all your hard work! --le |

Hi List. I've got a problem with multiple given names, because it is quite common in Germany that the given name by which someone is known is actually the person's second or third one (like "Anna Maria Katharina" known as "Katharina" or some "Franz Benedikt" who has never been called "Franz". Do I have to use the a.k.a. feature or is there a way of marking one of the first names? Thanks in advance, Stefan Duesterhoeft |

Hi all -- I am finishing up the initial cut of my website and want to test different themes. To do this I enabled theme switching in the configuration, but when I go to connect to the database, I can't find a place to click to try the different themes. I looked around the directories and found the themes folder, but how do I switch to them while in IE7? Any info appreciated! I need to know as I am programming this without sight (I am blind) and am trying to get a family member to look at the visual aspect of the interface. (I can deal with anything that is plain text, but graphics and such aren't handled by my screen reader.) My nephew says he can't find how to change the theme. Is it just a matter of opening a file in the themes folder? Or should there be something on the welcome page that switches the theme? Thanks much in advance! --le |

Ok, I finally got pgv up and running and displaying my gedcom! :) Thanks for all the assistance. But the pages still all have the following annoying message: Warnings: The GD imaging library does not exist. PhpGedView will still function, but some of the features, such as thumbnail generation and the circle diagram, will not work without the GD library. Please see http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php for more information. The DOM XML library does not exist. PhpGedView will still function, but some of the features, such as Gramps Export features in the clippings cart, download, and web services, will not work. Please see http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.domxml.php for more information. So is this something I need my server administrator to install? and where do I get these libraries? Any info welcome! I am approaching my deadline next week and I have so much to do -- but I am glad the gedcom is at least working. I wanted to work on a theme to maybe personalize it a little, but perhapsthat will have to wait until after the reunion. I am running pgv4.1beta6 Thanks! --le |

Ok, that sounds reasonable--but could you save me some time navigating sourceforge by telling me where to go to grab the source? Is there a url to a zip file with everything in it that I can download? I really should get used to sourceforge at some point but I find the layout of the site awkward -- maybe because I'm usually in a hurry when I go there. Thanks. Oh, and one more think: I use a service provider and therefore only have ftp access to the site and no shell priveleges for files I up/download. My problem is that if I put my index folder outside public_html, I don't know the raw address of the index directory, which also contains the gedcom file(s) (or should those be put outside index?). What I mean is, when I type pwd in ftp I get "/pgv/index for the location of index and public_html/pgv/ for my pgv installation source. What I don't know is the full address of my login on the server. So when I go to add a gedcom, it asks me for the address where the gedcoms are located and I don't know what to type. Do I need this raw address in order for the php files to work? And therefore, if the server is changed to put the ftp folders elsewhere, will that break pgv unless I change the paths? Thanx --le ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Finlay" <Joh...@ne...> To: "Laura Eaves" <le...@ca...>; "All About PhpGedView" <php...@li...> Sent: Monday, July 23, 2007 2:14 PM Subject: Re: [Phpgedview-talk] error message Hmmm... Ok, now I am going to recommend that you scrap the entire site and start over. It may be that some of your files are corrupted because editconfig_gedcom.php should be much bigger than 109 lines. You might also want to try the 4.1 beta 6 release. It is quite stable. --John > -----Original Message----- > From: php...@li... Hey all, My phpGedView page started to return error 503 "Service Temporarily Unavailable" recently. It took me a while to realize my web host, DreamHost, had implemented a change to their default security settings. They call this option "Extra Web Security." What does is turn on mod_security at the http server. The http error log has this message in it when phpGedView is viewed in a browser with this setting is on: mod_security: Access denied with code 503. Pattern match "\\.php\\?&(cmd|command)=" There's a fix for this in the wiki, though it has a different error number: http://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php/FAQ:_Common_Error_Messages#403_Error_-_Access_Denied (Don't copy phpGedView/index/.htaccess or phpGedView/includes/.htaccess to your phpGedView directory. Make a new phpGedView/.htaccess or the other directives in there will deny access to your page.) BTW, I'm running phpGedView 3.3.7 on php 4.4.7. --Dave |

Hi all -- I went through the config process and found the link to upload and add my gedcom, but when I try to add the gedcom I get the following errors: GEDCOM Configuration - ERROR 8: Undefined index: DonEavesGedcom.ged 0 Error occurred on in function unknown 1 called from line 494 of file editconfig_gedcom.php () ERROR 8: Undefined index: DonEavesGedcom.ged 0 Error occurred on in function unknown 1 called from line 495 of file editconfig_gedcom.php Return to the GEDCOM management menu The odd thing is, there are only 109 lines in editconfig_gedcom.php, so I can't find the error. I also still can't get the help windows to pop up -- I have popup blocking turned off in case that was the problem. When I click on help, I get a click from the browser, which is IE7, and nothing happens. I look at all my open windows in case it was opened but not on top, but no help window. I've hit a brick wall. Can someone diagnose this problem? My only question is that when I follow the readme's suggestion and put the index directory outside web space for security, I don't know exactly how to reference it -- when I type pwd in ftp it says the index folder is /pgv/index, which is right. My public pgv folder is www.eavesfamily.org/pgv/ If anyone could tell me if my configuration is wrong, I would be much obliged... Is this a common error? Thanks in advance!!!! --le |

Hi Peter -- thanks for the link -- I uploaded the gedcom into the index folder which I put outsidepublic_html as directed, and changed its permissions to writable (777) As I said, I followed the readme carefully. I am trying some other things, but I am getting close to my deadline and really need this thing to be working TAhanks to everyone who responded. more later. --le ----- Original Message ----- From: "peter" <pet...@hc...> To: "Laura Eaves" <le...@ca...>; "All About PhpGedView" <php...@li...> Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 6:19 AM Subject: Re: [Phpgedview-talk] not according to docs...??? Laura, I'm confusing about al your questions, may be that's the problem. At seems you have to do an upload of the gedcom file. When you are logged on as admin, you can upload the gedcom files with the admin option or by mygedview submenu, manage gedcom, there are different options. After that you manage the users, option manage users, witch are authorized for that gedcom file. The help file is in the help menu and is normally ready after a good install working, with the index you can find the info. Also at the pgvsite is an userguide and other info available. http://wiki.phpgedview.net/en/index.php/Installation_Guide The favorities are to be filled with your persons of the gedcomfile at a later moment when you are running. The application need some time to learn it and using al the options. It is to prefer strongly to start pgv with the standard configuration, after good running you make your own changes/adjustments, step by step.
