Dear PGV list, I've recognized that the official PGV website forwards me to the Germany version[1]. Unfortunately this site is a) completely out of date (last entry January 2005) b) shows PHP errors It's for these reasons that I offer high recommendations to adapt the behavior of the French website[2]. Are there any plans that point to this direction? BR, Alex [1] http://www.phpgedview.net/de/ [2] http://www.phpgedview.net/fr/ |

I'm running the latest PGV on a box with the following specs: # Hardware: IBM eServer 325 # CPU: 2x AMD Opteron SledgeHammer 246 2Ghz # O/S: OpenBSD 4.3 AMD64 # RAM: 1GB The PostgreSQL database is running the following specs: # Hardware: Sun Netra t 1125 # CPU: 2x 440Mhz UltraSPARC-II # O/S: Solaris 10 05/08 # RAM: 1GB The .ged file is 37MB and has been cleaned and cared for. The database has been vacuumed and tuned. I have also tried running PGV on a quad CPU Sun 420R with 4GB RAM (Solaris 10) and a dual Xeon 2.66Ghz 4GB RAM (CentOS Linux), with the exact same slow performance. See for yourself: https://meteor.procyonlabs.com/pgv CPU usage never goes over 5%, and the disks don't appear to be thrashing or busy. Is there anything I can do? This is unbearable, and this file is going to grow as time goes on (major project my father has been working on). I appreciate any advice. Thanks! Randy |

Hi Dick, In the includes/menu.php, you will find a method in the MenuBar class called "getCalendarMenu". To disable the menu have that function return null when a user is not logged in. Something like this: if (!PGV_USER_NAME) return null; If the program they are using has a consistent "User-Agent" header then you can also try blocking it by adding it to the "$worms" array on line 104 of includes/session.php. --John > -----Original Message----- > From: php...@li... What can I test so it only does it when nobody is logged-in? Actually a better solution, possibly, is to make getCalendarMenu return empty if the user is not logged in. That's more likely to work for all themes. I still would like to know what to test for that condition. Is it one of the $PRIV_* variables? Dick |

It's coming from a dial-up address - it's also a bit dumb - why would they want gigabytes of empty calendar. I've blocked it in the firewall a couple of times but of course with dial-up the address keeps changing. What's amazing is they keep trying every few seconds for several days after their IP has been blocked. Dick |

Hi Dick, If you don't want the recursive copying to happen to can try blocking the offending program by IP address either through the PGV feature or using a .htaccess file. Most of the features can be disabled by removing the file. So in this case, you should be able to remove the calendar by removing the calendar.php file from your site. You might also need to edit the toplinks.html file in your theme if the menu item doesn't automatically go away after removing the file. --John > -----Original Message----- > From: php...@li... Hello, I've got a problem with having my phpgedview site being recursively copied. It seems to happen about once a week. It's not logged-in so the data is not a problem. The difficulty is that when the calendar is copied it becomes an infinite download; there is always a next year. I need to stop this because of the bandwidth being used. The obvious way is to remove the calendar altogether from the main page (when not logged-in). How would this best be done? Alternatively restricting the minimum and maximum years displayed by the calendar would do the trick. Is there a way to configure this? Any help appreciated. Thanks Dick |

I finally upgraded (v4.1.3), and can now present this year's wish list and questions. I'm gratified to see a lot of my past wish list items incorporated and the product is much improved. Thanks to all who have the skills, time and energy! I realize that the mailing list is not best place to formally present requests for changes, but I'd like to get some feedback before going through that process. I don't live and breathe on Sourceforge, I'm striclty an end user with a premium on spare time. HOW DO I...? Is there any way to mass delete all descendants (or ancestors) of an individual, including associated families? Can it be done through SQL? I've tried deleting all INDIs with a certain surname in SQL, but they still show up in the program. How can I synch? Is there a way to delete all familes that have been orphaned by deleting their INDIs? I do this sometimes manually, when I merge records, e.g. How can I turn off Research Assistant? How did I turn it on? It must have been part of the install process.... WISHLIST: - make "Save and go to record" the default closing action when "Add an unlinked person" is the calling link - toggle Research Assistant on/off - toggle Map on/off for better performance? - put gedcom in every internal link. I've complained about this before. I run several gedcoms and work on them simultaneously. Some links explicitly embed the gedcom reference, most don't. Also, I've never been able to configure to avoid the program timing out. Almost every time I log back in, it changes the gedcom on me and it takes quite a while to get back to the record I was working in. Additionally, if I copy a link to send in an email, I have to hunt around for one to copy that contains the gedcom (e.g. "&ged=fooBar.ged"). - if using media viewer, set it to pop up in separate window? (not sure I like it better, may just turn if off in every gedcom. I like the simplicity and interface of the old viewer) - put a "Add an unlinked person" link of every page (header?). I add a lot of new individuals and it's annoying to have to go through Admin tools every time. - have the popup add/edit dialogs expand vertically to fit window (too much scrolling) or at least allow the default vertical size to be configured manually. I have to expand these windows every time I use them. - "Add a new Media item": default "Highlighted" to "NO" - allow not writing CHAN records to gedcom (if possible). If they have to remain for the program to work, add a config to remove the "Do not update the CHAN (Last Change) record " checkboxes from the dialogs. I never use the CHAN info, and never care whether it's updated or not. It adds visual "junk" to the dialogs. And the CHAN records are (for me) unnecessary "junk" in the edit Raw process, as well. At the risk of adding bloat, it would be nice if typing locations could be a little more intelligent. For example, typing a town name produced a drop-down list of all known towns with that name from the geographic place locations data, with the county included. I spend a lot of time looking up county names in a separate browser window. Also, browser helps me with drop-down lists of previously entered data, but only for the exact same field in the exact same dialog. If I enter a location, e.g., in a birth record in the quick update dialog, it's not available to me in the location field of the "Add a wife" FAM dialog. Geographic place locations: This is a really useful feature for me, in that I can readily see how far places were from each other, after I enter records. I used to keep GoogleEarth open for this purpose. For example, when evaluating whether data found applies to an individual, it often helps to know distance, like whether it was a neighboring county or just across a state line. It took me quite a while to set up however, because I use a "non-standard" hierarchy". My top-level is the US state, not the country. For non-us locations, primarily German, I treat the kingdom as the top level. I don't want "United States" to clog up all the location data. So I had to take the provided location data and massage it in Excel before using it. I stripped out some data in the process. It wasn't easy as my Excel had a number of records limitation, so I had to work it in pieces and splice back together. If anyone wants the modified data, let me know. Would sure be cool if the GoogleMaps API would allow dynamic repositioning of the markers and that would modify the coordinates in geographic place locations. Maybe in two years? Solved- I've figured out the problem/bug/feature. The original ged file was called PublicGraham2008.GED. The updated version has been supplied as PublicGrahamMarch2008.GED with the expectation that on uploading it it would replace the older data. By renaming the new file temporarily to match the old name before trying to upload it, it is possible to now use the 'upload replacement' function without generating the errors that I was getting as below. So the upload user interface should insist that the filename matches the original one, or else be able to cope with it being different. Allowing it to be different and then failing because of that is a bug IMO. Anyone think I should report it somewhere? Hi, I am failing to upload a replacement gedcom to a site of mine that has a working but slightly outdated gedcom already in place. I've updated from subversion and am at build 2756- so am up to date at the time of posting. The errors I see start as follows: Performing GEDCOM validation... ERROR 8: Undefined index: PublicGrahamMarch2008.GED 0 Error occurred on in function *unknown* 1 called from line *565* of file *uploadgedcom.php* ERROR 2: feof(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource 0 Error occurred on in function *feof* 1 called from line *567* of file *uploadgedcom.php* *Warning*: feof(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in * /var/www/vhosts/graham/phpgedview/uploadgedcom.php* on line *567* ERROR 2: fread(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource 0 Error occurred on in function *fread* 1 called from line *568* of file *uploadgedcom.php* *Warning*: fread(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in * /var/www/vhosts/graham/phpgedview/uploadgedcom.php* on line *568* ERROR 2: feof(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource 0 Error occurred on in function *feof* 1 called from line *567* of file *uploadgedcom.php* *Warning*: feof(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in * /var/www/vhosts/graham/phpgedview/uploadgedcom.php* on line *567* ERROR 2: fread(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource 0 Error occurred on in function *fread* 1 called from line *568* of file *uploadgedcom.php .... and so on until memory resources cause to browser to crawl to a halt * I can see that the new gedfile has successfully uploaded to my phpgedview/index folder, but for some reason it just won't validate. The server is running CentOS 4 - and I have tried switching selinux off to see if that was preventing access to the newly uploaded file, but I don't currently think that is the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to ways to debug this, or obvious mistakes that I'm making? -- Cheers, Tony |

Thank you Brian, I think, I found a way. I only have to upload the GEDCOM-file, from the index container of the Demoversion into my online Version of 4.1.3. This works. I have a problem with an attempted installation; 1. All files have been uploaded to my web account from PhpGedView-basic-4.1.3.zip and expanded. 2. MySQL database and user have been created and connected 3. Permissions on index directory have been set to 777 and the two files inside also, the config.php was also set to 777. 4. The initial configuration was completed 5. The administration user information was entered and later checking indicates it is in the MySQL database. 6. When moved to the Gedcom connection, Add Gedcom was chosen as I had already uploaded a 2mb file into the Index directory. 7 When updating the configuration, a 403 error occurs. 8. At this point I cannot then login to the program and I need to remove the files and reinstall, as above. 9. I have checked the session folder and there is a session file there. Any suggestions? I am sick of having to reinstall the program to try different options unsuccessfully and have not yet had the joy of using the program. Tony |
