AFAIK PGV has en automatic detection of language. It could be a problem of the browsersettings - something like preffered language for websites or how is it called in Firefox. Waldo said: << yes, i have sourceforge monitoring the phpgedview list(s) and sending any messages to me via email where i can read and reply to them from my own machine instead of having to use the web interface... >> You mean I have to do something to get sourceforge to do that for me? I noticed the To line in your mail and other replies I have gotten from the list contain both the list address and my address, and I also notice that the mail I get comes from the list and not you individually. That makes me wonder if there are emails not in this thread that aren't being sent to me because my address isn't on the To line. Just trying to iron things out. Hi Laura, Welcome to the project community. This mailing list is not very active. Welcome to the list, Laura. There's quite a few of us on this list, but most of us don't post regularly. In fact, I don't even have a tree online at the moment (though I used to). There are too many projects ahead of that one. I use FTM, so creating a GEDCOM and importing it into PHPGEDView is a piece of cake. It's just a matter of focusing on the family site versus our learning site (tofy.net). -- Matt At 04:27 AM 4/4/2007, you wrote: >Thanks to Waldo who has been exchanging private mail with me, I have >discovered that there is a mail setting that may be keeping me from seeing >mail appearing on the list. >I have gone to my settings page for the list and twiddled some things, but >honestly I don't think any of the options there would cause mail not to be >sent to me. Thanks to Waldo who has been exchanging private mail with me, I have discovered that there is a mail setting that may be keeping me from seeing mail appearing on the list. I have gone to my settings page for the list and twiddled some things, but honestly I don't think any of the options there would cause mail not to be sent to me. Still, Waldo got my intro so I know someone is reading list mail... Anyway, please reply if you are getting my mail on list. I also know there is an archive but I haven't checked it yet. I am anxious to get mail if there is any being generated. Thanks and have a good week! --le |

first, i see that this has been selected to go to both the original message writer and to the list... i don't know why thunderbird has done that but if it is a default setting in the list and indicated by the headers, it may explain why this list appears to be so quiet... anyway, i'm going to leave it as is so that the OP gets a copy of this message directly instead of having to wait for her to get back over to SF and wade thru the online messages... Laura Eaves wrote: > Greetings all -- > I am new to this list, which doesn't seem to be very active lately, but > hopefully someone will read and answer my mail. yeah, it is a pretty quiet list and project... > My name is Laura Eaves and last year (believe it or not) I embarked on my > own project to do just what PHPGedView appears to have done already. "we" prefer to work with paf and in its environment and would embrace having a web interface that others could access for preusal or editing if they've been granted those capabilities... > Because of the blindness issue, I am wondering if you have other blind users > on the list and whether your user interface is accessible -- that is, > compatible with the major screen readers on the market... i'm not personally aware of any other blind members of the pgpgedview community... > Since the interface is generated by php I assume it is accessible, as php is > usually not used in interfaces that contain animations and other features > that trip up my software. right... the only place that i'm immediately aware of possible problems is obviously in the use of graphics... hopefully all the graphics carry ALT text so that you can see them by their words... > I have been trying to get to a place where I can download phpgedview but so > far my browser is blocking the download. Is there a simple way to download > the latest release? I am so anxious to take a look at it! i feel your frustration, laura... i remember when i was new to sourceforge and how convoluted things seemed... SF has mirror sites all over the world to held spread the load... this is especially true for the files stored for downloading... SF looks at your IP number and attempts to send you to a server close to you for downloading files... personally, i've had problems with this over the years as they always want to try to force me to virginia since i'm in north carolina... the problem with this is that i'm some 15 hops from their site in VA whereas i'm only 4 or 5 from other places like the university of minnesota's mirror... once they direct you to a mirror, then it is a matter of waiting for the download to start automatically... generally this is ok unless you have protections in place to prevent popups and other cruft that the internet has become infested with... when going to download, you also have to select the filename in the chart and not any of the other references linked to it... some are changelogs, readmes, documentation, statistics, and more... anyway, here's a direct link to the full version of the latest release... this archive also contains all the additional languages so that visitors from other places can read your site's interface in their native language... http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/phpgedview/phpGedView-4.0.2-all.zip -- _\/ (@@) Waldo Kitty, Waldo's Place USA __ooO_( )_Ooo_____________________ telnet://bbs.wpusa.dynip.com _|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____ http://www.wpusa.dynip.com ____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____ ftp://ftp.wpusa.dynip.com _|_Eat_SPAM_to_email_me!_YUM!__|_____|_____ wkitty42 -at- alltel.net |

Greetings all -- I am new to this list, which doesn't seem to be very active lately, but hopefully someone will read and answer my mail. My name is Laura Eaves and last year (believe it or not) I embarked on my own project to do just what PHPGedView appears to have done already. After working a year on my website -- which is implemented with PHP and mysql -- a friend sent me an email yesterday about this group. I went and read all your info and have decided to put aside what I was doing and join your group. Even though I lost a year of work, I do not regret what I accomplished on my site, which is not finished by any means -- in the process I learned a lot about php and web programming, which may make it possible for me to contribute to this project technically as time goes on. As for my background, I was a math and computer science major back in the 80s and worked a number of years as a software developer, but have been a home body for several years now. I am the person in charge of setting up a website for the Eaves Family National Association, and after some discussion, concluded that something php based that would work with paf and gedcom files would be most useful. When I came upon your project, what a surprise it was that what you have done is exactly what I envisioned. I can't believe I didn't find it before, but I was not subscribed to sourceforge and just didn't hear about it. Obviously you being 12 or more people can accomplish more in 5 years than 1 person can in 1 year...:) Anyway, I should mention that I am legally blind -- ad in fact lately I am no longer able to see the computer screen and so use a screen reader to do my work. (For the uninitiated, a screen reader is software that allows a blind person to navigate the screen with the keyboard and the software speaks what is on the screen. It also can control a refreshable braille display device for those who use braille.) Because of the blindness issue, I am wondering if you have other blind users on the list and whether your user interface is accessible -- that is, compatible with the major screen readers on the market... Since the interface is generated by php I assume it is accessible, as php is usually not used in interfaces that contain animations and other features that trip up my software. I have been trying to get to a place where I can download phpgedview but so far my browser is blocking the download. Is there a simple way to download the latest release? I am so anxious to take a look at it! Anyway, that's my intro! Hope to year from others on the list! --le |

Well, without having an install of my own, I can at least tell you that the errors are due to the values being enclosed in double quotes " " instead of single quotes ' '. Postgres assumes " " encase a column NAME, not a column VALUE. I'm trying to set up a site for our family history, and have been trying to make some simple division among the four ancestral families (my parents' familes and my wife's parents' families). Essentially, I've got something like this: * Alice Doe and Bob Jones, with son: ** Charlie Jones * Danny Smith and Ellen Miller, with daughter: ** Fran Smith Charlie and Fran then have a son, George. To put that into Ahnentafel notation, we'd have: 1. George Jones 2. Charlie Jones 3. Fran Smith 4. Bob Jones 5. Alice Doe 6. Danny Smith 7. Ellen Miller (I hope I got that right). Okay, now that I've got that established, here's what I've been trying to build: * A GEDCOM for each of the Doe, Jones, Smith, and Miller families * Each GEDCOM includes Charlie and Fran, and their son George * Each entry for Charlie and Fran, in all four GEDCOMs, includes links to the other GEDCOM files to connect their parents back (for example, in the Jones GEDCOM, Charlie has a link to his mother in the Doe GEDCOM, and Fran has a link to her father in Smith, and to her mother in Miller, etc.) The problem? This doesn't seem to work. Sometimes, for example, I'll be in the Jones GEDCOM file, and if I look at George's pedigree I won't see everything from all the files. And even Bob Jones' entry in the pedigree isn't the one from the local (Jones) GEDCOM, but instead is displaying one from (say) the Doe GEDCOM, so you can't even see his parents anyway. I could go into more specific details about the problems I'm seeing, but I'm not sure that's 100% relevant. I have to believe that others have tried to do this before. I really want to split up the GEDCOMs, either so I can have different front-end URLs for each family, or so that at the very least one can log in with a preferred GEDCOM and then only see the events pertinent to that family (so it's not clogged up with anniversaries for the other families). Really, the only people who'd want to see all four families' events would be, in this example, Fran, Charlie, and George. I haven't actually completed this on my site (I only have three families input and most of that is only skeletal) but there's enough that I'm seeing problems. It's also possible that I've got some older links from earlier experiments (like maybe George being the linchpin, linking to parents in each of the four GEDCOMs), but I can't remember. I'm close to simply ginning up simple GEDCOMs and testing from scratch. Any suggestions? Should I not include the current generation (George) in any of the GEDCOMs, and just put him (and his future siblings) into their own file? If I did that, would he be visible to viewers in the other GEDCOMs, or does the linking only work backwards (linking in ancestors but not descendants)? Thanks for any suggestions you can give me! david. |

Hi, Is it possible to link flicker photos to PhpGedview media? I know we can link it using the photo url but there is an issue. Flicker expects all photos on websites to linkback to flicker as such: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/24812999@N00/300552819/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/111/300552819_1759f1b300.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="PB180146" /></a> Is this possible in Phpgedview? You should be able to do this with CSS. You will need to change the default CSS of the sub menu to your own custom one. You can do this in the toplinks.html file where the menu is generated. Add the following line where the Welcome menu is generated: $menu->addClass("menuitem", "menuitem_hover", "welcome_submenu"); =20 Then in the style.css file make a copy the .submenu style and then rename it to welcome_submenu. =20 Then add a fixed height: 300px; and a overflow: auto; to the welcome_submenu. You could also refer to the .small_inner_block style as an example. =20 I think that will work, but I haven't tested it myself, so I am not making any guarantees :-) =20 --John =20 =20 ________________________________ From: php...@li...
