I just noticed the following on use.perl.org: http://use.perl.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/02/224205 I've been aiming to buy PerlApp for awhile with the intent of generating client binaries to use in packaging a binary distribution, but never got around to it and was dissuaded by the fact that it would force me to keep an ActiveState Perl build. Looks like you can now build binaries with free software. Anyone have time to build a binary package for 0.5.0? My schedule is crammed full leading up to the 0.5.0 release so I can't volunteer but it'd be nice to offer a binary distribution with the 0.5.0 series. -Collin P.S. Yeah, rebuilding apache has definitely been on the plate. The
redirect is kinda silly. I think it's a fair goal to say it'll be done
before RC3.

The 0.5.0 release candidate 2 has passed muster and is available for testing. While this release cycle has been long due to Michael's and my schedules of late, this release candidate is a significant improvement over the last. A large number of bugs were squashed and the only feature remaining is SSL compatibility. This release candidate includes: * Support for 2 protocols: UDP/TCP (with SSL support on its way) * XML themes! <- Portable themes that allow a Peep installation to configure out of the box. * Plug-in architecture for post-processing * XML messaging * Better stability. Yeah. This should be a lot more stable. * New sound effect architecture - makes adding new effects simple * New repository layout. Sounds are better organized and organization is now based on directory structure, rather than file numbers. * ALSA 0.9.x support (But untested). * Better debugging support The general install process is as follows: 1) Explode the tarball 2) Link in the sound directory. This can be downloaded at http://www.auralizer.com:8080/peep/download.html. 3) Build the server 4) Start the server 5) Build the client. With the server listening on port 2001 you should hear several sounds, including a rooster, a doorbell, and a couple of bird calls during the `make test`. The release candidate is attached as well as a tarball of the configuration files I use when testing for reference. I just updated Peep's autoconf build to autoconf v2.53. Hopefully,
I didn't break anything, but the build process passes a bunch of my
tests. That should bring us pretty much to a feature freeze before
0.5.0-rc2. If the server isn't building for you, just holler my way.

While the release cycle slowed down recently due to Michael's and my critical paths reaching critical mass, we are moving steadily towards the final 0.5.0 release. Following a marathon hacking session this eve a litany of bugs were ferreted out and a tentative release candidate number 2 (0.5.0-rc2) produced. The 0.5.0 clients are now stable and pass all regression tests. Some final checks will be made this weekend and the official announcement is anticipated early next week. The release will include * Support for 2 protocols: UDP/TCP (with SSL support on its way) * XML themes! <- Portable themes that allow a Peep installation to configure out of the box. * Plug-in architecture for post-processing * XML messaging * Better stability. The client library is written entirely in perl, so it should be possible
to run it under win2k. We haven't had anyone try yet, unfortunately, so

The tcpdump is just a wrapper around the existing tcpdump. The
client library, however, is very versatile and it's rather easy to
create your own clients. Collin has a nice step-by-step example on
how to create clients and once you're familiar with the library, it
should only take you about 30 min or so to create a basic client.
The fun thing about creating clients is that you get to arbitrarily
decide on how you want the representation to sound.
We're gonna meet this wed to finish up the client-side. So hopefully,
we'll have the release out by early next week.

Hiya Richard. Which version of Peep are you trying? If you're
currently using the 0.5.x CVS, I suggest you hold off because we're
still working on the client libraries (and I think the current CVS is
broken and will be fixed this weekend). 0.4.x definitely works and I
suggest starting there for now.
There are two tools which should help you play around with your
installation: Try using peck and keytest. I particularly like keytest
because it allows me to interact with the server directly. Be aware
that you'll only start hearing sound once you're clients begin sending
events.
If you need more help debugging, I suggest doing a:
./configure --enable-debug=4
and then run your clients with a --debug=9. That'll show you what
both client and server think their doing and help get you up and
running. Please let us know if that doesn't help get you up and
running.
As for the traffic_monitor client, that particular client was contributed
by a user (Pedram). But I think Collin Starkweather might be able to best
help you out on this one.
