hi, a couple of requests: a) does this only happen with OSS? b) can you run the following debug procedure: run "osw --debug" type "run" at the next prompt when the segfault happens, type "bt" and e-mail the results to me. Thanks. -Amar > hi, > > i tried to run the 1.1beta4 rpm on redhat fedora 1 / planet ccrma and > ran into several segfaults. > > ... with OSS it segfaults sometimes... > > [root@audio7 root]# osw > OSW - Open Sound World > (c) 2001-2003 Amar Chaudhary > (c) 1998-2001 Regents of the University of California > All rights reserved. Installation on Mac OSXHi Bertrand- There is no need to compile anything if you are using the OSX binary = install. System.mak is now auto-generated by the utility oswconfig.exe located in the osw/src/win directory I'm now sure how well things will work with mingw at the moment. I've made a lot of changes to the Windows build system, including removing the dependency on STLport. -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "smoerk" <sm...@gm...> To: <osw...@li...> Sent: Saturday, December 20, 2003 12:33 PM Subject: [Osw-users] win: where is System.mak? > Hi, > > I tried to compile a CVS checkout on windows with MinGW/MSYS. I wish I could say I have time to help (especially with debugging my alsa code) but with vacation coming up I'm pressed as is to get enough real work hours in for this month. Also I've been using kernel 2.6.0 (i.e. alsa 1.0+) and a lot of things that used to work are kind of broken. --------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew (Andy) W. Primary consider is to a) test if it installs correctly and b) can run tutorial/demo patches. Of course, if anyone has installer experience (especially OS X), please speak up. -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "smoerk" <sm...@gm...> To: "Amar" <am...@pt...>; <osw...@li...> Sent: Thursday, December 18, 2003 3:45 AM Subject: Re: [Osw-users] new release? > Amar wrote: > > > I agree, there has been enough recent activity, including bug fixes, to > > warrant a new release. I agree, there has been enough recent activity, including bug fixes, to warrant a new release. I consider the Windows and SGI versions ready, and Linux and OSX nearly so. I would prefer to release all four platforms together. A release ahead of the holidays seems reasonable. One thing I would like to do this time is validate the various installers for the release before going public with it. Is there anyone willing to help with this? Thanks. -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "smoerk" <sm...@gm...> To: <osw...@li...> Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2003 7:57 AM Subject: [Osw-users] new release? > hello, > > iirc you wrote several weeks ago, that there will be a new release in a > few weeks. i'm just curious when are you going to upload a new binary > (for windows). there are several checkins to cvs from the last days and > weeks, i hope the portaudio stuff solves the sound card problems on > windows. should a cvs checkout work on linux or should i wait until you > announced a new release? hello, iirc you wrote several weeks ago, that there will be a new release in a few weeks. i'm just curious when are you going to upload a new binary (for windows). there are several checkins to cvs from the last days and weeks, i hope the portaudio stuff solves the sound card problems on windows. should a cvs checkout work on linux or should i wait until you announced a new release? (i cannot compile on windows, so i'll have to wait there anyway). thx, -s |

OSWPL certainly does not prohibit interaction with any other license, but I think that the GPL prohibits linking to a library under OSWPL. Then again, interpretations of the GPL vary widely, e.g. Linux is GPL but Linus says 'binary-only kernel modules are OK', but RMS thinks that two programs merely existing on the same filesystem implies a 'link'. Perhaps a dual license (OSWPL/GPL) as mentioned would work. I don't know how the 'precedence' thing would work, though. I've only seen dual licensing like GPL/Commercial where the selection of license is the user's choice (choose free as in speech or pay money... you choose ;) I think that GPL is okay if its your own code, but I would not integrate or link someone elses GPL code into an OSW plugin without explicit permission from the author. Failing that, use LGPL. --------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew (Andy) W. Schmeder mailto:an...@a2... http://www.a2hd.com |

Yes, you can use GPL'ed code in your own external transforms, and distribute those transforms independently for the main OSW distributions. Your transform will probably carry both the GPL and the OSWPL, with the GPL's provisions on open source probably taking precedence. It's great to see interest in new transform development out there! Let us know if you have any further questions about the process. -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "smoerk" <sm...@gm...> To: <osw...@li...> Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2003 8:17 AM Subject: [Osw-users] OSWPL and plugins > Does I understand it correctly that a plugin doesn't have to be under > the OSWPL? Does I understand it correctly that a plugin doesn't have to be under the OSWPL? I can use any Open Source license and also write commercial closed source plugins/transforms? I'm talking about plugins that work with a default OSW installation (and don't require any OSW modifications). Mainly the question is: can I use GPL'ed code for writing a OSW transform? |

hello, now i get some sound when using the alsa driver, but the audio is very distorted (tested with a Sinewave transform). as always my sound card is a RME Digi96/8 with a DAT machine connected to the S/PDIF out as DAC. btw, could you disable OSS mode or make it optional as long as it freezes linux? i wrote a bug report about installing osw and now it's gone, because of a crashed machine. |

<quote who="smoerk"> > "make" didn't build the externals. why do i have to do a "make > externals" seperatly? Most of the OSW externals library are actually XML files, which are preprocessed by a utility called the 'externalizer' that translates them into C++ and then compiles the result. The externalizer is not available until after you've run 'make install'. > i also cannot get it to work with alsa. it's a rme digi96/8 card, which > some audio apps have problems with. but it does work with alsaplayer, > jackd or pd. Well the jack driver is forthcoming, perhaps it will be ready in a couple of weeks, I can't say for sure right now. There is also an OSS driver which currently I recommend that you should stay away from (since it will likely freeze your machine). The ALSA stuff is in a state of flux. I made some changes as recently as yesterday... cvs update and try it again if you can. You should get significantly more output than what you reported. Thanks for you help with testing this, by the way. We appreciate it. --------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew (Andy) W. Schmeder mailto:an...@a2... http://www.a2hd.com |

> "make" didn't build the externals. why do i have to do a "make > externals" seperatly? "make externals" relies on an installation of OSW, and is also conceptually a separate process from building the core system. The precedent is the Linux kernel itself, where you first make the main kernel and then the kernel modules. The steps are documented in COMPILE.linux, and I don't think it's too much to type an additional command. On the other hand, I suppose we could try and do a "make everything" -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "smoerk" <sm...@gm...> To: <an...@a2...>; <osw...@li...> Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2003 9:55 AM Subject: Re: [Osw-users] more problems with cvs version > Andy Schmeder wrote: > > >>[root@audio7 i386]# osw -dr alsa > >>OSW - Open Sound World > >>(c) 2001-2003 Amar Chaudhary > >>(c) 1998-2001 Regents of the University of California > >>All rights reserved.
