Version 1.2.7 of OSW has just been released for Windows, Linux and Mac = OS X.=20 =20 This is primarily a bug-fix release.=20 =20 * A bug that prevented patches from being loaded a second time (e.g., = load a patch, then try loading it again, with any number of actions in = between) under Linux has been fixed.=20 * SamplePlayer can now read correctly from a Table as well as a = SampleBuffer. This is useful for live recording and looping without the = need to have a pre-made sample file.=20 * Corrections/improvements to Mac OS X and Linux installations.=20 =20 You might have noticed that the list of changes and fixes has been = getting shorter and less exciting over the last few versions. That is = because we are making 1.2.x "stable." More new features and significant = changes will be rolled out in the first 1.3.x release.=20 =20 As always, users are encouraged to download and try out the new version, = and report any issues to the bug/support trackers or the users mailing = list.=20 =20 OSW is a graphical programming environment for real-time music and audio = applications. It is intended for composers, performers, and sound=20 designers. Please visit the project site at = http://www.opensoundworld.com=20 for more information. =20 |

(From the OSW newsroom...) The Vst transform for OSW has (finally) been released as an add-on external. It can be downloaded from the OSW Contributions page or http://www.ptank.com/amar_music/software.php#vst. The Vst transform allows users to run most VST effect and instrument plug-ins in OSW. It is currently only available for Windows. |

Version 1.2.6 of Open Sound World has just been released. This version primary address several issues in previous releases for Mac OS X: * A completely redesigned "double-click .app" that is easier to install and run. * The rather annoying "I have to click twice on a patch window or the dock" problem has been fixed. In addition, support for MIDI sysex input has been added, including a new transform SysexInput. Users are encouraged to download and try out the new version, and report any issues to the bug/support trackers or the users mailing list. OSW is a graphical programming environment for real-time music and audio applications. It is intended for composers, performers, and sound designers. Please visit the project site at http://www.opensoundworld.com for more information. |

OSW 1.2.5 for Windows 2000/XP, Linux and Mac OS X has been released and = can be downloaded at either http://www.opensoundworld.com or = http://osw.sourceforge.net. This is primarily a bug-fix and minor-enhancement release, but it is of = particular significance to Linux users. * Fixed RedHat and SuSE Linux support. There was a problem for some = people in previous releases loading external transforms leading to the = infamous "Can't fund Button" message. * New Transforms: * TypeRoute=20 * TCPSend * Fixed bugs in Granulator synthesizer. Try it out! * Fixed bug 864541: does not use default browser on Windows. OSW will = now use the default browser (e.g., firefox on my system) instead of = always selecting IE. * Enhanced support for MIDI clock output; handy for sync-ing up with = sequencers or tempo-based gear. * Added small feature: copy a full transform path name to the clipboard = by right clicking and selecting menu option - this is useful for = copying/pasting transform path names in OSC scripts and applications. * New built-in table: /sine2 (sine squared) * Added support for string constants and string operations * Added new mode to FanIn transform: setting option "-multi" to true on = creation will allow FanIn to accept different types on different inlets = and always output Any. * Fixed minor bug in AddSynth. Users are encouraged to download and try out the new version, and report = any issues to the bug/support trackers or the users mailing list.=20 =20 OSW is a graphical programming environment for real-time music and audio = applications. OSW does make use of wish8.4 to launch the UI, but as long as your version created a "wish8.4" with the version numbers, I think everything should be OK. -Amar > OK, I figured out my problem with building Tcl 8.4.9 and not being able to > see the proper tcl_platform(threaded) entry. OK, I figured out my problem with building Tcl 8.4.9 and not being able to see the proper tcl_platform(threaded) entry. It was, as I had hoped, user error. Andy suggested that I ldd the file, which I did, and it showed that the loader was looking for libtcl8.4.so from /usr/lib. Well, that was the *existing* tcl shared lib that was NOT compiled with threading. When I copied the new libtcl I had built into /usr/lib by hand, "puts $tcl_platform(threaded)" returned 1. Hurrah! Problem understood. Now I have done a "make install", but the default build I did has (a) placed the executables in /usr/local/bin instead of /usr/bin which should be OK given my $PATH, but (b) tclsh was copied there as tclsh8.4. OSW doesn't care about tclsh, correct? Just the shared lib, right? So I should be fine, . yes? Thanks for any help, -jim |

All, Hello, my name is Jim Ravan and I am new to OSW. My Tcl does not *seem* to be threaded, so I am on the journey to try to compile a Tcl that *is* threaded. I downloaded the latest 8.4.9 sources from the SourceForge Tcl site and configured with "-enable-threads". The make looked fine, so I tried "Make test". All the tests that ran were successful. Now the problem. I'm running PlanetCCRMA under Fedora Core 3. The supplied tclsh in /usr/bin says "no such array element" when I try: $ tclsh % puts $tcl_platform(threaded) So after the successful "make test", which included tests for threading, by the way, while still in the unix subdirectory of the downloaded 8.4.9 Tcl source tree, and before I stuck things in /usr/local/bin with a "make install", I made sure that threading was enabled in the newly compiled tclsh by typing: $ ./tclsh % puts $tcl_platform(threaded) Well, it said the same thing as the original tclsh said: "no such array element"! So I'm confused. After I configured with "-enable-threads", I expected the make to "just work". But it seems, and a few Google searches seem to bear out, that tcl_platform should contain a "threaded" element that contains 1. And that is not the case in my new tclsh for some reason. Why does my compiled tclsh not have a tcl_platform "threaded" entry even though I configured with "-enable-threads"? (And when I look at the configure output, it seems to be checking some details about pthreads.) Can anyone help, or point me to the tcl mailing list where I should be asking this question? Thanks, -jim |

While I can't yet answer the core question (freezing GUI), a couple of side issues: 1) The Jack driver isn't yet complete, though is part of the source code. 2) C++ compilation speed seems to be quite variable. On my main Linux box (my 2.4GHz, 2.4.x kernel gcc 3.4) it runs extremely fast. But on my OS X iBook (800MHz, running Apple's gcc 3.3 port), it runs quite slow, though not painfully so. The key seems to be having not only a fast processor, but most importantly a large amount of RAM (I recommend at least 512MB), and a fast disk system if you do need to swap. Most of the C++ compile time is taken in the optimization phase, which is very memory intensive and can start thrashing if it doesn't have enough memory - you can use "top: to see this. Will look into the freeze issue - though i haven't been able to reproduce it yet. Anyone else seeing this behavior? -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "smoerk" <sm...@gm...> To: <osw...@li...> Sent: Monday, November 22, 2004 3:15 AM Subject: [Osw-users] GUI freezes with ALSA, no sound with Jack. > Hello, > > after a few hours of compiling (why is C++ so slow?), I tried OSW 1.2.3 > on Linux. Hello, after a few hours of compiling (why is C++ so slow?), I tried OSW 1.2.3 on Linux. I have 2.6.8 Kernel, TCL 8.4.7, gcc 3.3.5, Jack 0.99 and a Soundblaster Live. When I click on the speaker symbol, I can hear audio, but the GUI does not respond anymore. I can move windows (which I think the windows manager is responsible for), but there is no response inside the windows. Even the light of the speaker doesn't get red. With Jack there is no sound and with OSS no sound and also a froozen GUI. Any idea how to solve this problem? |

Hi Honza- The driver binaries should be in your $OSW_DIR/externals/drivers directory (OSW_DIR is probably /usr/local/lib/osw unless you set it when running the configure script). Make sure the oswLinuxAlsaAudio.osx is in that directory. If it is, then please provide a copy of all the output that appears in the terminal window when you first run OSW. Because the drivers are themselves externals, I suspect this might be related to the general issues that seem to occur loading externals in SuSE Linux... -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "Honza Svasek" <hon...@se...> To: <osw...@li...> Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2004 7:06 AM Subject: [Osw-users] enabling alsa > After compiling with --enable-alsa osw still tries to open the OSS drivers > (which don't work). > > I cannot find anything in the docs. Hi Arvind- I am using a FedoreCore/PlanetCCRMA system, but I do currently compile with Tcl/Tk 8.4.x w/o any problems. Are you compiling from a source package (tar.gz or RPM), or from CVS? I highly recommend compiling from CVS at this time. Also, can you send the exact output from ./configure to me and/or the list? Thanks. -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: "arvind ganga" <arv...@ho...> To: <osw...@li...> Sent: Friday, July 09, 2004 5:28 PM Subject: [Osw-users] Compile OSW on Slackware, with TCL/TK 8.4? > Hi all! > > I'd like to use OSW, it looks great.
