Needless to say that I have so far very much enjoyed contributing to Notion and working with you guys. Now let's continue to make Notion even better than it already is. Cheers, Philipp |

Hello Notioners, I'm pleased to announce we've added Philipp Hartwig (aopicier) to the Notion team. Philipp has been a regular contributor for some time now and I'm happy to see him officially joining the team. In the near future we'd like to do another official release (among other things, we have some nice multihead improvements lined up), which we hope to do more regularly in the future. As we've converted the git repository to use submodules, it is now easier to build notion from git, so we won't be releasing development snapshots anymore, just more regular proper releases. Kind regards, Arnout |

Hi Brandon, I think use xev to check the keycode of your Search key, and then use xmodmap with the suitable .Xmodmap file to remap. Did you try that? Assuming that Search is indeed unmapped, something like keycode XXX = F12 should do the trick? regards Wojtek On Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 4:12 PM, Brandon Giesing <br...@gi...>wrote: > I am loving how simple this is! I am loving how simple this is! I am using it on Arch Linux on a CR-48 Chromebook. However, there is a problem with that... The Chromebook has no F11 or F12 keys which the F12 key is used for the main menu to shut down and stuff. Also the Search key is useless... It doesn't even work as a caps lock. Maybe somebody can help me map the search key to an F12 key? |

Hello Arnout, Just an update: the results below were for Synapse only. When I tried those settings with Launchy, the app only appeared in the top left corner of screen 1 (would always open there regardless of what screen was active), rendering that app of limited use. While I was at it, I decided to install gnome-do, which I haven't used in awhile. It positions itself out of the box without need for any defwinprop, in the center of the active screen. Though the downside is its dependency on compositing - without running something like compton, the app dialogue opens as a full window in the active frame (Compositing, I find, needs to be disabled while viewing video). So, it's back to Synapse without any defwinprop - as centering in the active frame is more consistent behavior for me (opening apps in inordinately small frames is usually unintended). As an aside, Synapse also requires compositing, without which, it loses its graphical adornments (but is still quite usable). Steven -- Hello Arnout, "float=true, userpos=true" worked for screen 1. On my multihead setup, on screen 2, the dialogue appeared in the top left corner (it appeared independently in the corner regardless the frame sizes defined for the screen). "transient_mode" regardless of any setting did not appear to have any affect. Hi, sorry for not reacting to your message any earlier. Unfortunately it seems to be a bit more difficult to write a good battery script as there are several different conventions for the /sys/class/power_supply/BAT* directories. For example on my system there is no energy_now or energy_full file, which are the ones your script is trying to read (and the same comment also applies to your patch[1] to statusd_linuxbatt). Instead I have charge_now and charge_full files. Some discussion[2] I've found via Google seems to indicate that there are even more possibilities and that they all use different units. The acpi program is able to handle these cases and so its source[3] is a good way to learn how to do this correctly. I don't know how other window managers handle this, but that might also be worth a look. In the end, I don't feel like it is worth reimplementing all of this in Lua, but of course that's just my personal opinion. I've long ditched all the battery status indicators and now simply use the statusd_exec script to periodically execute acpi -b. In detail, my configuration looks as follows. In my template, I have an entry "%exec_acpi". In the "mod_statusbar.launch_statusd" table I then have the following entry. exec = { acpi = { program = 'acpi -b | cut -d\' \' -f3- | tr "\n" " "', hint_regexp = { critical = '^Discharging, 1?[0-9]%%', }, retry_delay = 5 * 1000, }, }, It gives me the current battery level in percent and the remaining time or the time until fully charged, depending on whether I'm on AC or not. And if the level is below 20 %, the output is colored in red. I don't know if this would suit your needs. If you want greater flexibility, maybe adapting your script to retrieve the values from the acpi program instead of calculating them by hand might be a good solution? Including the remaining time would then certainly also be very interesting. What do you think? The 'float' and 'transient_mode' winprops are probably your best bets. Additionally the 'userpos' winprop may be of use. Looks like I tried Synapse myself before, and I arrived at: defwinprop{ class = "Synapse", float = true, transient_mode = "off", userpos = true, } I do feel we should support application like this 'out of the box' better. If you can test the above configuration, that'd be great, and I'd be willing to add it to the default config. Also, if we can find some other way to recognize windows that need to float, that might be even better. Kind regards, Arnout |

Searching through the archives, I believe this topic has surfaced in various forms (but I couldn't discern a definitive answer or solution). Essentially, I like to use popup launchers like synapse and launchy. On a stacking wm and other tiling wm's, the popup dialogue displays in the center of the active display. In notion, the dialogue shows by default in the center of the active frame. Not functionally a big deal most of the time, provided the frame is of sufficient width. When the window frame is not, the dialogue becomes unusable as the input field is truncated (out of view). Is there a way to have the application show as expected in the middle of the display? I've been trying the various winprop attributes without any success. Fullscreen stretches the dialogue across the top of the display which, while usable, is visually unwieldy. Everything else I have tried still is restricted to the current frame. Not a show stopper for the best wm there is but if someone knows the answer, would be appreciated. Thanks! -- "Truth or die." Ok solved, thanks Johannes, Arnout. I followed Johannes' idea with drivers. Actually, I have ATI RAdeon, not nvidia. But the idea of having 1000 packages put up automatically by dist-upgrades caused me to check. Jeez, I had like drivers for every card there was on the market since 1970s. So what I did was remove xserver-xorg-video-* and KEEP xserver-xorg-video-radon. (It removes the metapackage xorg-vide-ati, but heck.). No filickering anymore. So, to summarize, it is a driver issue, Arnout you can sleep soundly:) Unfortunately, I do not know the REAL cause. namely, some conflict must have occured that forbade my card to do some specific function needed for smooth refresh. Hard to trace though. I don't even know which combination caused the conflict, I removed like 30 packages altogether, hard to say which one was problematic. regards wojtek On Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 7:11 PM, Johannes Segitz <joh...@gm...> wrote: > On Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 10:15 PM, Wojtek Aniszewski > <pen...@gm...> wrote: >> I have a problem with statusbar which notoriously "blinks" everytime >> (it seems) it refreshes. This should work when you load the 'mod_dock' notion module, set the dock mode to 'embedded' in the configuration, and start dzen2 with the '-dock' parameter. Note that the '-dock' parameter is not available in all versions of dzen2 (particularly, not yet in 0.8.5, which is in Debian). > And so, I would like to know what do you think about it. I personally think that in theory it's a great idea to use a seperate program designed specifically to be a great statusbar, instead of using a statusbar built into the windowmanager. Currently 2 practical problems with this approach is that many stand-alone statusbars for some reason have poor systray support, and that we don't yet expose much information about which workspaces exist and are currently selected in a standardized way, so this information likely won't be available to a standalone statusbar application. For the latter, there's some EWMH properties we could use, but they don't directly map to the Notion model very well, as described in https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20120510183944.GO2822%40bzzt.net&forum_name=notion-devel Kind regards, Arnout |

Hi all! I have a problem with statusbar which notoriously "blinks" everytime (it seems) it refreshes. At least, it occurs when I use more data displayed on the bar. My current template in the cfg_statusbar.lua is/was: template=" %date | mem: %mem_hfree/%mem_hused | battery:%linuxbatt_state%linuxbatt %watime | up %uptime | %mocp_title [%mocp_currenttime] | user: %cpustat_user | wifi: %netmon_kbsin/%netmon_kbsout %filler%systray", in theory, any of these fields can have a different refresh time, nevertheless when - for example - I only use template=" %date", the statusbar doesn't bink at all even when the hour changes. I have luck also when using two or three other fields, but for full bar, it blinks like crazy approximately every 2 seconds. I could accept the fact that the statusbar blinks, but I have at my disposal another computer system (desktop with ubuntu 10.04 and ion3) on which, for the same template, there is no "blinking" effect. So why? Obviously, I'm used to notion/ion so much, that I'm not considering becoming frustrated:), but today, somehow, the blinking started to iritate me. Hence, I went to construct quickly a bash script which uses dzen2 to display an alternative statusbar. It works OK, but unfortunately I don't know how to use in notion in a satisfying way (e.g. I don't want windows to go under it -especially the F3/alt-F3 queries). And so, I would like to know what do you think about it. regards wojtek -- Pentahedron - A polyhedron having five faces. Try binding the orginal backspace to something else. Think there's a bug that makes it impossible for two keys with the same keysym to function at the same time in notion. Try "xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = '" to disable the orginal key. That works for me at least. Though obviously not optimal. Hi, On Sun, May 27, 2012 at 06:53:35AM -0400, Steven Hum wrote: > The Colemak keyboard layout remaps the caps_lock to behave as a backspace > (delete) key. I haven't found a kpress definition disabling the key.. > unless it needs to be explicitly enabled (in which case, how is this done?) as mentioned in the bug tracker[1], the likely explanation is that the Colemak layout has two keys which are mapped to BackSpace, namely the usual backspace key and the caps lock key. Unfortunately we use XKeysymToKeycode to resolve the keysym used in a binding to a keycode, and the behavior of this function is not well-defined when there are multiple keycodes mapping to the same keysym. I'm afraid that fixing this might require some fundamental changes to Notion, and it might not be worth the hassle. As a work-around, you could explicitly unmap the usual backspace key (using the keyword NoSymbol), so that only caps lock is mapped to BackSpace. I don't know whether this is acceptable for you though. Regards, Philipp [1] http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3530060&group_id=314802&atid=1324528 |

Basically the same code as in look_*.lua configs should do it, like this: de.defstyle("tab", { de.substyle("active-selected", { background-colour="#000000", }) }) gr:refresh() This code works for me being executed via Lua code query box (Mod+F3). Perhaps it should work in scripts as well. However, it doesn't work if "tab-frame" style is set (I'm not sure if this is a bug or proper work of subtle style definitions "scoring"). In my case commenting out the following lines from lookcommon_clean.lua helped: de.defstyle("tab-frame", { spacing = 1, }) Hope it helps. |

Hello! I'm trying to figure out how to change color cheme on the fly, but without any results, so I'm asking for help. What I want to do is implement titlebar color change on language toggle (I'm using mod_xkb). Can someone give me some directions how to do this? -- Best reards, Alex Khmara |

Hello! Recently I tried to find a script to display battery status in notion statusbar and was frustrated because scripts in notion-contrib are too outdated, unsupported and not working. I considered this as challenge and tried to write my own script, which should be (a) satisfactory for me (b) flexible enough to satisfy folks who are using (probably ad-hoc patched) old scripts. "Satisfactory for me" part mostly consists of indicator ability to be both unnoticeable (hidden when battery is full) and attention-drawing (blinking in addition to "critical" hint when battery level is too low). "Satisfactoty for others" part supposes high flexibility of settings. For example, the following config seems to make the script behave *exactly* like default configured linuxbatt: settings = { info_data = {'percentage'}, info_format = "%.f", content_format = "%s", update_interval = 15 * 1000, bat_no = 0, thresholds = { full = {0, 10, 30, 100}, charging = {0, 10, 30, 100}, discharging = {0, 10, 30, 100}, }, blink_on_discharge = false, } If not all aspects are covered by settings at the moment, I would be interested in gathering feature requests and upgrading the script. Finaly, here is it: https://github.com/ezag/notion-scripts/blob/master/statusd_battery.lua It's my first experience with Lua, so I am very interested in receiving reviews and getting feedback. Thanks for your attention! |
