OK fine I've installed also Pidgin. Had hard time to get anything notifying me about something, but I tried to write self-messages. Anyhow, pidgin didn't use the notification standard similar to icedove (I tried that too) or gmpc. The conversations didn't show up in popup bubbles but new windows. I installed pidgin-libnotify as to force it to use popups, but it still didn't. Stupefied, I don't know is it obeying this standard or not. Hi, I use notion since...ion 2. Since then I never find how to manage the « popup alert » like « the new message » from thunderbird. Some application like « thunderbird », « gmpc (frontend for mpd for listen music) work fine without any tunning or configuration. Some application just didn't work like...pidgin. Anyone here know how to make the popup work with pidgin (or any xmpp client), all I want is to get a « systray » « popup » to warn me I get a new message. I already try satelontray and trayion but both didn't work well (or I don't know how to configure them). Because both need a box (top on the right) to work, and I like to use the all space of my screen. Regards. Simple question. I launch xclock, and it traps focus. The only way to break free is to have 'focus follows mouse' enabled, and move mouse cursor to a different window. In a scenario like: empty desktop with xclock as a solitary float, there's no other window to transport focus to (which otherwise could have been done by aforementioned mousecursor movement) so one is stuck for good (only able to escape by ctrl+alt+fX and pkill xclock). What's so special about it? Did Tuomo V hate MIT? My version is a git snapshot, commit a322b0ffa82fde37ef1f134ae557dda251c32fba . Hey, I wrote a script for Notion some time ago that, while it's basically a rewrite of min_tabs.lua (it hides the tab bar of frames with just one window), fixes several issues I had with min_tabs. I just created a repo for it, so in case someone else here might find it useful: https://github.com/meribold/notion-hide-tabs Kind regards, Lukas |

I think keys are documented in uppercase here because both in the notion configuration ( https://github.com/raboof/notion/blob/master/etc/cfg_notioncore.lua) and manpage. I agree that might be slightly confusing to end-users. I've updated http://notion.sourceforge.net/notionkeys.html to use lower-case letters. I'd be open to allowing lowercase letters to identify letter keys in the configuration (backwards-compatibly of course) and changing the manpage, PR's welcome. Ok this makes sense now. I have a few more observations. Mod1+c depends on if it is done in a client or in an empty frame. In an empty frame it closes the frame in a client it closes the window. I suggest adding this to the Clients section of notionkeys. Is there a reason for the keys using capital letters instead of lowercase? I think the documentation should use lowercase unless uppercase is needed for some reason. (Unless notion is case insensitive). The description for resizing is confusing. The arrows represent which side of the frame to resize not the direction. Pushing the arrow makes that side larger, Shift arrow makes that side smaller. In case you are interested I have made my own keyboard reference to help me make sense of everything. https://gist.github.com/moaxcp/b88bf2122e6e29661893 On Sat, Nov 14, 2015 at 1:24 PM, Arnout Engelen <no...@bz...> wrote: > On Sat, Nov 14, 2015 at 6:38 PM, moaxcp <mo...@gm...> wrote: > >> I've been looking into shortcuts lately. I think this is the intentional behavior. To see why, create three vertically split frames, and resize the center one using the left and right arrows. That is strange. I am in the default layout with two vertically split frames. I enter resize mode from the left frame. The right arrow grows the frame right. Shift right shrinks the frame. Should the left arrow shrink the frame? If you want to shrink the frame on the right, try pressing shift+left arrow when the resize mode is activated. I assume the reason for that is sometimes there might be a divider to the right of the frame, in which case the right arrow would be used to expand to the right. I've been looking into shortcuts lately. I tried Mod1+x and it did not work. According to the keyboard reference, it should merge with sibling. When I have multiple clients in a frame and I split the frame then merge will put them back together in the same frame. Is this the only case merge does something useful? |

Hi, Thanks for your report. Notion should work with lua 5.1, so I consider this a bug and would like to fix it. I tried to reproduce it as follows: $ vagrant init ubuntu/trusty64 $ vagrant up $ vagrant ssh $ sudo apt-get install git pkg-config lua5.1 lua5.1-dev libx11-dev libxext-dev libsm-dev libxinerama-dev libxrandr-dev gettext $ git clone https://github.com/raboof/notion $ cd notion notion$ make This successfully compiled notion for me. What combination of packages caused you problems? Kind regards, Arnout On Fri, Oct 16, 2015 at 10:07 AM, L.R. Hi, The documentation suggest Lua version 5.1 for compile, but this version of Lua is not working for me on Ubuntu 14.04. He stops with "ioncore_ext.lc: bad header in precompiled chunk". The problem is solved installing version 5.2 of lua, and also the liblua5.2-0 and liblua5.2-dev. Now it's fully operational. Pretty good job guys, the tabs help a lot with text-based browsing. Regards. |

Just as a late comment, I just spent one day using Awesome WM. [My Notion Git snapshot got fried by lua version confusion (5.1? 5.2?) and I needed a fallback WM.] So, Awesome has the exact workspace numbers set (left upper corner) I was thinking about. I will not post screenshots, as it is easy to check out. It is an useful feature. Now, back and comfty in Notion:) regards -WA On Tue, Jun 30, 2015 at 02:55:53PM +0200, Arnout Engelen wrote: > Hello Wojciech, > > WRegion.is_active might come in handy. Is there a way to make the floating dock really on top? I made a screenshot to describe it better, I hope you see it, let me know if not... So, what you see is my custom made (some years of work) black/green color scheme, some apps and an 'empty' workspace with floating xterms. On top, you see my statusbar done using dzen. It sits inside a floating dock, is screen-wide and has like 10px height. It is switchable, I toggle it on/off. In both documentation, and cfg_dock, it says it should be on top, but as you see the tag of one xterm covers it. Is there a way to prevent this? BTW this is my (trimmed) cfg_dock.lua to conclude: ====================================================================[snap] -- Create a dock mod_dock.create{ -- Dock mode: embedded |floating (on top) mode="floating", -- The screen to create the dock on screen=0, -- Corner or side of the screen to place the dock on. -- For embedded dock the valid values are: tl|tr|bl|br -- For floating dock the following are also valid: tc|bc|ml|mc|mr pos="tr", -- Growth direction: left|right|up|down grow="left", -- Whether new dockapps should be added automatically to this dock is_auto=true, -- Show floating dock initially? floating_hidden=true, -- Name of the dock name="*dock*", } -- For floating docks, you may want the following toggle binding. defbindings("WScreen", { bdoc("Toggle floating dock."), kpress(META.."E", "mod_dock.set_floating_shown_on(_, 'toggle')") }) ====================================================================[snap] -- Wojtek Aniszewski [Fr: vôitek anichévsky] [Eng: voyteck aanishevsky] www: http://www.coria.fr/spip.php?auteur1606 /^..^\ ,-------------------------------------, ( (••) ) ►►►►| My public GPG key ID: AC66485E | (|)_._(|)~ | please use email encryption! | `-------------------------------------" |

I don't think there's a 'standard' way to do that. http://raboof.github.io/notion/tour/#specifying-that-a-certain-program-should-always-be-in-a-certain-frame might be of interest to you, though it solves a different problem. I do think it would be interesting to be able to do this (don't worry, I won't make it default behaviour :) ). Let's see what would be needed: - when an application is started from the notion prompt, remember: -- the pid of the spawned process -- the workspace (or even frame) on which the prompt was shown - when the application maps a window -- put it on the right workspace Now to put the window on the right workspace, we'll have to know the PID of the application that spawned the PID, and go up the process hierarchy until we find the pid of the spawned process saved above. 'Finding the PID of the process mapping the window' might also be tricky. There is the _NET_WM_PID property - is that accessible already when the window is mapped, or is that added later? And (how) will requesting the _NET_WM_PID property affect performance? For applications started e.g. from a terminal, we'd have to find the window on which the terminal was mapped, and then open the new window on the same workspace where that window is. This is even harder, as that PID could have multiple windows open, and those windows could be mapped on multiple workspaces. But for the simple case 'this PID is associated with windows on just one workspace', it could work. I suppose we should monitor this by keeping track of changes to _NET_WM_PID, too?
