thanks Luke. i really appreciate your help. i personally think Fp-1 is a good fit. any conflict would happen, because the late comer can take Gp-1... your commitment to www is also helpful. it is a wiki-based system, and you can easily maintain the contents from remote hosts. i'll write to you more about the task, later. again. thanks for your help. i really appreciate it. -- taka On 11/7/05, Luke R <luk...@ya...> wrote: > I'd like to sign up for Fp-1 and www. > > Hello to all developers btw, I'm a new guy here. I'd like to sign up for Fp-1 and www. Hello to all developers btw, I'm a new guy here. Most development experience in a Win environment, so I'm somewhat cutting my teeth on this project. If anyone feels strongly about taking Fp-1, let me know and I can graciously bow down from it. I can for sure proofread webpages :o) (English only though, I should mention). Cheers, Luke __________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - Make it your home page! http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs |

because of a scheduled power outage, the website will be off tomorrow. (2005/11/06 00:00 - 12:00) if you would like to take a look at the task description page, please cache necessary pages and files, asap. http://www.netnice.org/pukiwiki.php?Netnice2.2 thanks! -- taka |

hi, matt. thanks for the post. if you can be responsible for L1 development, that will be great. also, you may take as much tasks as you want, including Lib1, of course :-) but, since NPF porting is the most tough part in the diagram, i suggest you to start from easier tasks, raising the hurdles step by step. so, if you have any spare time, can you just upgrade the 2.6.7 netnice, to 2.6.12?? this will be quite instructive for you, as a starting point. if that is okay, please take a look at freebsd/sys/NOTE file, in the alpha package. you will find commit instructions, which tells you how to add an upgraded version to the CVS repository. Particularly, please follow the instructions given in the following sections. use r2612, as the branch for the clean 2.6.12, and netnice2612 for your new version. - How to import a newer version of the OS - To add a branch to the repository - Too apply the patch of the old version, to the new one if you cannot understand these instructions, please just leave them untouched. once we had a new developer, who were new to CVS, jeopardized entire repository with careless import operation, and i really do not want that to happen again. if the task is too easy for you, that will be nice. really nice. so, please just show me by actually finishing it, and, please try to fix the bug, i described in L1 task description, next. For more detailed description, please try to get commit log for FreeBSD, on July 23, 2005. the bug tries to drain packets from a deleted leaf VIF. you may not understand what it means now, but, you will, once you finish the upgrading part. and, the commit logs contain many hints about how to fix the bug, though it is made for other BSD OSes. i believe these tasks will provide fairly instructive opportunity for you, to get used to the Linux/netnice code. any questions and suggestions are welcome. thanks!!! -- taka Matt Davis wrote: > I would be up for L1, mostly for the NPF port. I would be up for L1, mostly for the NPF port. I wanna generate some code, especially some kernal hacking goodies. Although Lib1 is definitely my second choice. Mostly I would like to contribute some of my own code for the project. But since Im the new guy to the project, ill let you all deem what task would be more 'useful' for my learning the netnice system. -Matt Takashi Okumura wrote: > Dear netnice developers, > > I am sorry for the lack of detailed information in the last message. > As some of you might know, I was in the U.S. last year, to take several > exams needed to qualify myself. Dear netnice developers, I am sorry for the lack of detailed information in the last message. As some of you might know, I was in the U.S. last year, to take several exams needed to qualify myself. And then, I returned to Japan to resume my hospital training (yes, I am a medical student). This is why I have been unable to write to you, since I spend most of my time at hospitals these days... Anyway. I have restarted the release engineering task of Netnice 2.2. And, because it is not just a simple and easy task, I would really appreciate if some of you help me. For this purpose, I tried to clarify the state of the project and tasks needed to be done, with a simple diagram. http://www.netnice.org/pukiwiki.php?Netnice2.2 As you might have realized, there are a lot of tasks, at a glance. But, most of them are simple ones, for example, it is pretty straightforward to create a "Release Candidate", once we have a beta version. Likewise, if we have an RC, it would be easy to create an actual release (this is why RC is called as such). So, I think each task will not take so long, contrarily to the complexity of the diagram. Now, I would be happy if some of you take over some of the tasks. If you have some time to spare, please post task ID of your choice to the mailing list, so that we can coordinate the tasks among coworkers (if any...). If any conflict happens, I will try to divide the task into several parts so that everyone can be happy. (For example, you may find L1 can be divided into three pieces.) If you need access to the developers' CVS, please just let me know. I'll soon add your account to the access control list. Secondly, the specification of libetnice is currently available only in Japanese. I understand it is frustrating to most of you guys, even though we can translate it to english (or most of other major languages) by free translation service. So, please don't hesitate to ask for assistance. I will try to respond as quickly as possible. However, since I might be unable to reply in a prompt manner, I would be glad if other Japanese speakers help us, just in case. Questions are really welcome. I would appreciate any suggestions, and code contributions :-) Also, I suggest you to use the Wiki at our project web site. If you need urgent help, I might be available on MS messenger (ta...@ho...), though I prefer emails. Lastly, if you need something, to facilitate your development process, such as PC, HDD, software, etc, I may help. Just let me know. I will also ship a Netnice sticker to your mailing address, when you first commit :-) thanks! -- taka > Dear netnice users/developers, > > I'm sorry that I've not contacted you guys for so long. hello again, matt. and, welcome to the developer's ML. currently, i'm writing the task descriptions, and so, please give me a second. meanwhile, if you're a linux guy, please install our alpha package to your linux box and try it just to get used to the system. thanks! -- taka@project leader Matt Davis wrote: > I have been looking for an open source project for a while. > > I found you guys, and want to do some significant development for > netnice, and become a primary developer for the project. I have been looking for an open source project for a while. I found you guys, and want to do some significant development for netnice, and become a primary developer for the project. I would like to help in porting to the linux kernel, and add to the os-independet code as well. I see the potential for this to become a useful tool as long as its kept as simple to use as the basic POSIX commands. I would like to know what I should start looking at and whom i can communicate to on the part of the project I might be put on? Thanks! -Matt |

Dear netnice users/developers, I'm sorry that I've not contacted you guys for so long. I've been negotiating with a developer in charge of the development of libnetnice. But, it finally turned out that he cannot contribute the implementation to the project. So, now, I am looking for other developers who can take over the implementation task, utilizing a specification he designed. Contribution to the specification is also highly appreciated. I have already posted a job description at sourceforge, but, if you find the task interesting, please let me know. * help wanted page https://sourceforge.net/people/viewjob.php?group_id=87780&job_id=23605 * libnetnice ML http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/netnice-library thanks, -- taka p.s. I'm also looking for several helpers to release Beta for OpenBSD and NetBSD. The task is quite simple. Please ask me for further detail, if interested. Dear Netnice Users/Hackers/Developers, Breaking the six months' silence, we release beta versions of Netnice-2.2 for FreeBSD 4.11 and for FreeBSD 5.4. Most significant change is the support for "easy installation". The package are loaded with pre-compiled GENERIC kernel, some binaries and libraries. Now, users can just type "make easyinstall", to make their systems "netnice-ready"! http://www.netnice.org/download Packages for NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Linux will come up later. But, we will make every effort to release them, and the final Netnice-2.2R with sufficient quality. To that end, we would highly appreciate any feedback, and any help. Please contact me! Thanks! -- taka |

Hi Mark, Jaikumar, Arindam, I'm really sorry for not being able to contact you guys, since the last message. I arranged to develop the prototype of libnetnice so that you can start the porting and the integration of netnice applications and the library soon. Trouble was that I've lost connection with a developer in charge of the library design, and it is still in the process of development (probably, still in its early phase, unfortunately). I apologize for my impoliteness, and will let you know when the library becomes available. Sorry... -- taka |

Hi Igor, Thanks for your interest. I'm a project leader of netnice.org. The plan to make it a kernel module is a fairly attractive approach for us, in that it makes the system more usable to many end users who have never tried kernel patching. This is particularly true for MacOS X, in that we might ask software companies to ship the kernel module with their products to control network I/O of their applications. But, there are several concerns about this plan. First, technically speaking, the VIF system requires tight association between the VIF system and OS core functionality, such as struct proc and socket management. And, most of OS implementations do not support hooks sufficient to make the entire VIF system "loadable". For this problem, we may need to define a subset of VIF functionality that can be made "loadable", or, we may need to ask core developers of the target OSes to support hooks we need (actually, one of them once suggested me to support such hooks to make it loadable.). Secondly, before making it loadable, we probably need to develop a library layer, which absorbs differences between the full-fledged VIF system, and the (possibly simplified) loadable VIF system. This is also good for for Windows porting. As you might have noticed, the system uses filesystem abstraction for its API, although this is hard to realize on Windows OS. By providing an OS-independent library layer for general purpose network control, we can make the system more portable, and make it more attractive to many application developers. With the vision in mind, actually, we started the development of the library, libnetnice, several months ago. but, because of the nature of the open-source voluntary project style, we are not making significant progress these days, very unfortunately and very regrettably. We would probably need to address this issue also. Anyway. The idea is very exciting to us, and so, I would like to support you as best as I can. Please let us know your feeling, idea, and suggestions. It would be even more helpful if you let us know background of your interest, and your intended application field. Again. Thank you for your message, and I would be looking forward to hearing from you again. thanks! -- taka Igor Shmukler wrote: > Hello, > I found your project while we were looking for a way to implement a similar functionality for our needs. > Our original idea was to extend PF with ALTQ capabilities. > The fact that netnice allows creation of virtual interfaces and fair-share queuing is something that interests me very much. > I would love to know if there are plans to implement netnice and VIF as loadable kernel modules. dear netnice developers, i'm writing this message, specifically to Mark, Jaikumar, and Arindam, who have joined us for the libnetnice project, which is to rewrite control code of netnice applications utilizing the library for OS-independent network control. Mark, Jaikumar, and Arindam, thanks for joining us. i really appreciate your help. and, i'm sorry that i couldn't contact you after the initial contacts. i've been fairly busy in a writing task and unable to write to you. a bad news is that the libnetnice is not still ready. another bad news is that we're a bit behind the release schedule. although we scheduled to release the beta version on mar 1, the development is currently stopping due to time constraints of the core team. anyway. for further discussion/coordination of the libnetnice project, i would like to use the mailing list so that information is properly shared among all of us involved. and, first, i would like to confirm your machine setting. if you're reading the message, i would really appreciate if you confirm this, and please say hello to all of us :) or, if your situation has changed, not allowing to participate in the further process, that's fine. but, please just let us know. dear netnice hackers/developers/users, as scheduled, we are releasing alpha versions for FreeBSD4.11, FreeBSD5.3 NetBSD1.6.2, OpenBSD3.6, and Linux 2.6.7 on feb 8. but, i think they still need pre-alpha testing. so, if any of you have a little time, i would really appreciate if you take a look at the latest Snapshot. any feedback is appreciated. http://www.netnice.org/download/SNAP-02-06-2005.tgz thanks! -- taka |

Dear netnice developers/users, sorry for taking too long. we had so many things to do, and could not make great progress for several months. but now, we have fixed our release schedule and have started to work intensively to meet the dates, as follows. Feb 8, 2005 alpha release Mar 1, 2005 beta release Mar 22, 2005 Release Candidate 1 Apr 1, 2005 Netnice 2.2 Release the alpha release (feb 8) includes the latest kernel patch for FreeBSD4.11, FreeBSD5.3, OpenBSD3.6, NetBSD1.6.2, and hopefully, for Linux, also. We will probably be able to add MacOS X(Darwin 7.7) and NetBSD2.0, by april 1. i'm writing this email to you, to ask you for some help. first of all, can some of you try the latest patch for FreeBSD4.11, on your environment, and give me feedback so that i can improve before the alpha release? (yes, i know you want 5.3, not 4.11. but, time is limited... i promise to release 5.3 in the feb 8 package...) secondly, isn't there anybody who have used FreeSBIE, or CDBSD before? to create a bootable freebsd image? i have released one bootable CD in june. but, since then we have made so many improvements, and added many new software onto our repository. so, in addition to the alpha release of the kernel patches, i would like to provide the system in a more easy-to-use form. so, i would really appreciate if any of you volunteer to create the iso image. i'm really in trouble about the scheduling (too many tasks to do, too little time.) if you participate in the development process, i will mail netnice stickers for laptops and for servers to you (it's verrrry cool), just as a token of my thanks. thanks!! -- taka Takashi Okumura wrote: > > after several months' struggle, we are finishing initial porting task of > FreeBSD4/Netnice, onto FreeBSD5, OpenBSD, and NetBSD. i think we can > release the alpha-patches for them in a month. dear netnice developers, after several months' struggle, we are finishing initial porting task of FreeBSD4/Netnice, onto FreeBSD5, OpenBSD, and NetBSD. i think we can release the alpha-patches for them in a month. Linux port and Mac OS X port will follow soon in several months. and, i'm writing this message to you, to make a decision about the alpha release. as you know, netnice requires applications to realize fancy controlling of network I/O on end-host. and, we are planning to add two applications shortly to our application line-up: fwbuilder and libnetnice. firewall builder is a nice-looking firewall rule builder with full GUI support, and we can use the application to create firewall rule to set onto VIF. the functionality is still primitive, but, it will be faster than existing implementations, and we will extend its functionality soon. libnetnice is a library to control network I/O, and we believe that it is the first library that controls network I/O on end-host operating systems in a platform independent manner and realizes control of network I/O for any user application. (i know that there is a portable bandwidth limit library, but i believe you know what i mean here.) so, we have several new products, which would definitely make the project much more attractive. however, the problem is that, since each of the products is developed by different individuals, it is a bit difficult to keep pace of all of the subprojects; some of them will be ready in a week, some others may take a month more. what i would like to know is, whether you want us to wait until all of the products become ready, or you want to have a patch for your own platform (FreeBSD5.3.1, maybe) ASAP? i'm personally thinking that, the complete package would be a bit better, since we can save the number of advertisement posts to related mailing lists. otherwise, we need to post messages whenever some of the pieces become ready, which might be annoying to subscribers not interested in the project. (right?) so, do you prefer to have a complete package which includes everything? or, do you want to have a patch for your current platform (FreeBSD5.3.1, maybe) ASAP? i would appreciate any feedback, comments, and opinions. please vote, if you can. http://www.netnice.org/pukiwiki-e.php?packaging%20strategy thanks! -- taka p.s. i have just created a new ML, netnice-library, for the discussion of libnetnice. please join us, to discuss its specification. thanks! |

Hello All! As requested, here is the weekly report on the firewall builder module project. This week I was able to begin work on the firewall builder GUI by adding the netnice information to the XML database within firewall. I also added user interfaces, as well as the cpp files that accompany them, for the advanced options of the netnice policy compiler. Firewall builder will now creates pseudo policy files for the netnice architecture. This coming week I will focus on the policy compiler and its interfacing with the GUI. Thanks, Patrick |
