Much thanks goes out to Scott, I applied his patch to 2.6.12 and the kernel boots fine. Mounting the nnfs fs works seemingly error free too. I have yet to do much testing with this but it looks smooth. The kernel with the applied patch is now in CVS and you can give it a shot: "cvs co -r netnice2612b Linux" -Matt |

hi netnice developers! i'm looking for an experienced linux administrator, who can administer the build server. i'm expecting kernel build skill and experience in snmpd, apache, crontab, and cvs, hopefully knoppix remastering. if you're interested, please let me know. thanks! -- taka Takashi Okumura wrote: > Happy new year, Netnice developers! > > I have just set up a build-server for linux/netnice, which will > also be used to do Knoppix remastering for Knoppix/netnice > bootable CD. > > Anyway. Happy new year, Netnice developers! I have just set up a build-server for linux/netnice, which will also be used to do Knoppix remastering for Knoppix/netnice bootable CD. Anyway. Please feel free to post any seasonal greetings to the list, maybe with your latest update :-) thanks!! -- taka |

Nirval, Nice meeting you! To clarify your email: Fedora is a Linux distribution. Linux, simply is the kernel, the base operating system that Fedora, as well as hundreds of other Linux distributions are built around. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel (www.kernel.org) and a bunch of software, called packages. Packages and a Linux kernel make a linux distribution. Different distributions, Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Slackware, etc etc all have the Linux kernel(that is what makes them a linux distribution) but they differ in the packages and initial setup that they apply. Some distributions integrate their packages better than others. Fedora does a nice job of this integration. For example, in Fedora, a hyperlink in teh Thunderbird email client will spawn a corresponding Firefox web browser opening to the link, if it was clicked. Other distributions do not include such nice intricies, and the end user would have to toy around to get some added flexability. For development purposes, Fedora is a good basis for a group to develop towards. Developing for one release of Fedora assures that all libraries (and there are a ton of em) are of the same version with all other Fedora libraries for that particular Fedora release. This similarity among development libraries allows the developer to dynamically link code for that library and have it work with other Fedora machines. To answer your question, yes Fedora is a good choice, but I prefer a more minimalistic environment for my home machine, with out all of the extra bells and whistles that Fedora comes with. After all tehy both run linux, and if I want a bell or whistle Im sure it can be downloaded some where. -Matt ~ Nirvail wrote: > Hello! > My name is Nirvail. hi Luke, and netnice-library developers, as you might have realized, i have sent you several emails this weekend, suggesting the task arrangement below. * libnetnice development * 1) specification all 2) prototyping Luke R on FreeBSD4.11 3) port FreeBSD5.4 Mark Linux Nishu OpenBSD - NetBSD - 4) application rewrite FreeBSD5.4 Mark H Van Tuyl Linux Kashif, Nirvail, Ashok, Gaurav OpenBSD - NetBSD - if you think the application rewriting is too easy, i may suggest other tasks; for example, improvement of the network control module for Apache web server, mod_netnice. btw, as i have suggested, it would be better for us to keep a english-version of the specification. so, i would appreciate if anybody put the result of machine-translation to the wiki page, as a starting point. lastly, if you want a team sticker, please let me know. but, please remember that a person is eligible for the sticker only after his first commit to the CVS, or to the Wiki ;-) thanks! -- taka Luke R wrote: > Hello all! I am looking to lead the development effort on libnetnice, and I was really happy to see that so many people are looking to get working on it as well. Don't let me hold anyone back - if someone has a really good idea on how this should happen, feel free to speak up and take the reigns. > > The first step I'm actually looking for is to get a solid definition of the interface and get it documented in the wiki on the site. I know that there are a few pages out there now, however all are in Japanese and did not translate very nicely for me via Google. If anyone has read through these pages and has a clear translation, please send it to the list. I realize some people aren't crazy about holding back on development - I know, I'm not really either. One thing I have learned in my minimal working experience though, is that it is a lot better to define things before you start coding. > > Next up will be the fun part of making this work, and then the various porting projects. If anyone working on a port wants to do this in parallel with the main libnetnice project, that will probably work out quite nicely. > > I guess that's what I had in mind for tackling this. If anyone think that sounds stupid or has other ideas, again, please say so. I'm really excited to get this in an easy-to-use library and extend Netnice into more applications. > > Luke R. |

Hi nirvail, thanks for joining us. i would also suggest you to work on the rewriting of netnice applications on linux, using libnetnice (lp-1). however, since the library is still under development, please wait a bit for the completion of the task. in the meantime, i also suggest you to install linux/netnice on your machine :-) you may ask questions, but, first try to solve your problems yourself, by searching the web and by reasoning. also, when you carry out the task, please keep a note, or a diary, on the project Wiki (http://www.netnice.org); questions you have, how you address them and solve them, related website you find, etc. the pages would be a good guide for our new customers. i would also like to see how a person new to the system thinks and develops his recognition about it, to improve the website. any suggestions are welcome. thanks! -- taka NIRVAIL SANDHU wrote: > Hello! everyone > > My name is Nirvail Singh Sandhu. hi Kashif, thanks for joining us. considering your situation and background, i guess rewriting of netnice applications on linux using libnetnice (lp-1) would be a good fit for you. however, since the library is currently under development, please wait a bit for the completion of the task. (as i might have told you, Luke R is heading the development process.) in the meantime, i suggest you to install linux/netnice on your machine. you may ask questions, but, first try to solve your problems yourself, by searching the web and by reasoning. also, when you carry out the task, please keep a note, or a diary, on the project Wiki (http://www.netnice.org); questions you have, how you address them and solve them, related website you find, etc. the pages would be a good guide for our new customers. i would also like to see how a person new to the system thinks and develops his recognition about it, to improve the website. any suggestions are welcome. thanks! -- taka Kashif Jamal Soofi wrote: > Hi **Takashi Okumura & all, > > I am Kashif, I am from Lahore, Pakistan. Hi **Takashi Okumura & all, I am Kashif, I am from Lahore, Pakistan. I am working in VB.Net and Visual C/C++. I have developed an application for Linux as my Final Year Project 2 and half years back. Now I want to develop Linux skills and also do less or more kernel stuff. Also this project is of my interest. So it will be good to help the project and hopefully the same will do my purpose. I am available for the linux task that is L1 currently I think but first I need to get familiar will netnice. Please guide me in that. I learn by example so it will be good if you assign me some task for learning purposes= . An important thing, I am on job for at least 9 hours a day plus 3 hours of traveling time. So there is possibility of task getting late. hope you will be forgiving on time matter. Looking for listening from you Regards, Kashif |

I really want to move on to some kernel development. 2.6.12 has been ported, unfortunately I am getting a long stream of assembly code when I boot... and kernel debugging is off... so something went wrong, I have yet to address this directly but I have never seen this before... or at least, to this extent. I am going to play with an idea... but I was wondering if you all have any recommendations if you want to toy with it... cvs co -r netnice2612 Linux thanks -Matt |

Hi all, My name is Wuttiphong Preechapunyakul. Now I'm studying a master degree i= n ICT (Information and Communication Technology) at AIT. I'm working with mod_n= etnice module. In my project about mod_netnice, I try to add a new admission con= trol funciton to mod_netnice. This access control function will use informatio= n of client to make a decision in access control processes. Now I will add 3 features as following 1) The features that can limit the concurrent connection of user 2) The features that can limit the no of connection that can connect to s= erver in some period. 3) The features that can limit download size in some period of each user. After finish this 3 features, I will try to make the sever can dynamicall= y adjust the value set by admin base on information about bandwidth of serv= er on each time. For example, If the server has a few client connect to it, it = will try to increase the limit of concurrent connection for each users.( But I= 've=20 not designed in this part, this is just an idea to improve the module). If anyone has an idea, questions or any suggestions about feature of acce= ss control functions, please feel free to email me at this email. Thank you, Wuttiphong Preechapunyakul ---------------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through AIT WebMail : http://www.ait.ac.th/ |

hi Nirvail, thanks for joining us. i think Luke R will lead the implementation process. please join netnice-library mailing list, also, and wait for next message. i would also appreciate if you let us know about yourself. thanks! -- taka p.s. Luke, can you send your rough plan about the implementation process to the lists, so that the developers can collaborate together? thanks! currently the compile for netnice2612 stops with the linking error: > LD init/built-in.o > LD .tmp_vmlinux1 > kernel/built-in.o(.text+0x62db): In function `do_fork': > : undefined reference to `vif_fork' > kernel/built-in.o(.text+0x993f): In function `do_exit': > : undefined reference to `vif_exit' > net/built-in.o(.text+0x2236b): In function `ip_finish_output': > : undefined reference to `vif_input' > net/built-in.o(.text+0x223a8): In function `ip_finish_output': > : undefined reference to `vif_input' > net/built-in.o(.text+0x48c59): In function `inet_sock_release': > : undefined reference to `vif_checksk' I have a feeling its the way the makfiles are setup all of the net/core/vif_*.c use the EXPORT macro... so Im kinda scratchin my head on this one. -Matt |

dear netnice developers, thanks to the efforts made by our peer developers, we're expecting to have more and more commit traffic in near future. and, to deliver the logs to the community in an organized manner, i have just created a new ML for the commit log, netnice-commitlog. whenever any commit is made to the CVS repository, the log is automatically forwarded to the ML, and archived. this feature will be usable, because we have several implementations on different OSs and need to update other ones, based on the commit information. if you're interested, please join. and, i also suggest to use "digest" option. the subscription form is available at the following page. http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/netnice-commitlog thanks, -- taka |
