Hi All, I had fun tonight building MorphixLiveKiosk. I wanted to debug a problem with pdfs. Such fun I had :) , I manged to have problems with x. To get x running on a morphix cd, amongst other packages, the following packages are need:- <packagereq>xserver-xorg</packagereq> <packagereq>xfonts-base</packagereq> Normally I do not have these packages in my template - which was the problem I now have solved. :) I normally just have:- <packagereq>morphix-init-matchbox</packagereq> Which Depends: morphix-init, matchbox So my question is; should xserver-xorg and xfonts-base, be in the depends of /scripts-main/*/debian/control or always in the template file ? IMHO in the depends, but my debian package building skills and knowledge is _poor_. Now to the real problem, trying to get ssh into qemu, to sort out this pdf problem... Regards, Brendan |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 If you're trying to autobuild a basemodule, you should look at isomaker instead (which creates a base.iso). There are quite a few README's (/usr/share/doc/mmaker), and one is specifically about isomaker. Afaik we also have a 2.6.17 base iso on morphix.org/autobuilds :) cheers, Alex Gabriel wrote: > Hi there again. Hi there again. I forgot to mention: I've edited the base mod xml template and changed it to use debian sid (I use dis as my desktop and always used it to make my morphs) and only added <packagereq>less</packagereq> to the xml file. I've already got my own debootstraped SID tarball, which I made by typing debootstrap sid base_sid tar cvf base_sid.tar base_sid bzip -9 base_sid.tar I decided to try building the base iso another time and after trying to pass my base_sid.tar.bz2 to mmaker (using -b base_sid.tar.bz2), it complains about not being able to do some tunning inside /dev and other files. After this, its simply aborts :P After trying another time without using my base_sid.tar.bz2 :( , I noticed that it created a miniroot.gz and a vmlinuz, but the directory was all messed up. I'm also curious about the nvidia driver in 2.6.17. Is it inside the file my_base_mod/base/morphix by mmaker ? More nights without sleeping ... I think I'm starting to see things and shadows moving around ... eheheh :-) Best regards to you all, Gabriel. |

Hi there morphers! First I'd like to thank you for the very detailed response about my kernel doubt. I'm already playing with it. Besides, after following Alex's suggestion about the autobuild repository, I must confess that I'd really like to try building a 2.6.17 basemodule. I've started playing with it. There is just one little doubt that was no clear to me after reading the manpage and Readme file for mmaker. That is: I'm using this command: mmaker -m basemod_2.6.17/base/boot/miniroot.gz -k basemod_2.6.17/base/boot/vmlinuz -t ./tmp -v basemod-2.6.17-2006-12-15_0600.xml basemod_2.6.17/base/morphix The mand tells me that, if I intend to build a basemod, I should (must?) use the -m and -k options (??). mmaker will create miniroot.gz and vmlinuz ? Or should I get them somewhere else ? It's really not clear for me. Sorry. Thank you once again ! Best regards to you all, Gabriel. |

I would recommend making a debian package and adding it to your basemod xml package list. It's what I did :) For details look at make-kpkg. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi Gabriel, Gabriel wrote: > Is it possible what I'm trying to do ? > Do you guys have any link or file that can send my to enlight my ideas ? It's very much possible to change the kernel! But first Nvidia and ATI. In the morphix package repository, the 2.6.17-morphix kernel is available with a nvidia-kernel package for it. If you use a base ISO with this combination then you merely have to install nvidia-glx in the mainmodule to get hardware acceleration running. ATI should be even easier, it just needs the fglrx-kernel package installed. See the autobuilds on morphix.org/autobuilds and the packages in morphix.org/debian. Now, a custom kernel. It's possible to do so by hand, but you'll need to do a bit of work: 1. build your custom kernel 2. build your third-party kernel modules, and the cloop and unionfs kernel modules 3. open the base ISO that you want to modify with the new kernel (mount - -o loop base.iso /cdrom). Copy over it's contents into a directory order to modify it. 4. replace yourbase/boot/vmlinuz with your kernel (bzImage) 5. gunzip and mount yourbase/boot/miniroot.gz, swap the modules in yourminiroot/modules with the ones from your kernel, and make sure cloop is in here too. gzip the miniroot and make sure it is replaced in yourbase/boot/miniroot.gz 6. use module-extractor (from the morphix repository) to unpack yourbase/base/morphix into a directory. Install all your kernel modules into it. use module-builder to compress the directory back into yourbase/base/morphix. That's about it in a nutshell. There are tools and scripts written to automate this process (change-base-kernel.sh in morph-scripts, and isomaker does the above from scratch to make a new base ISO), but this works if all else fails. cheers, Alex -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.3 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFFgffpQeuQA5TF/UsRAmuhAJ4zeGhreIZmSPi+u9u6Q4Cx75L4JACeIwNN 1iOnZbfOOKmsRp7jtR7y0xU= =0guJ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

No, the two don't have anything to do with each other. So, question the first: Can anyone think of a good way to slim a Morphix derivative down some? I am trying to cram as much useful stuff as possible on a 200M CD - got the basics covered but there are a few things I would really like but can't fit on the CD right now. I noticed that all the drivers for xorg take up a huge amount of space - is there a way to save some space there and still be compatible across most systems? I don't need fancy X capabilities - mostly I use it to run wireshark & ettercap in graphical mode.=20 And question the second: Is there a way to run the X session in Morphix as root by default? I tried passing 'username=3Droot' as a kernel parameter, but it appears that at some point, Morphix tries to create a new user named root - and that doesn't work out too well. I got a bit confused trying to figure out where exactly that kernel parameter is used; and help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Juergen |

Hi there morphers! As you already might know, I'm playing with morphix again, which is very cool and entertaining. I am currently trying to create a morph directed do graphics and multimedia, as well as to let people know about some nice games (such as tremulous, E.T. and others). I've installed and successfully configured Enlightenment E-17 (and some of it's applications) and it's very cool! I have a little doubt regarding kernel and 3D Acceleration. Please forgive me if it's a stupid question, but I've already searched about the topic for many times and got only some "File not found", "Page has moved" and "Page unavaiable" messages. So I decided to ask you guys. The situation is: I'm very interested in using a custom kernel with nvidia and ati drivers available in my morph, as these packages come with Debian SID (I've always used SID in my desktop and I have the nvidia driver and source configured and working pretty well). After browsing the Internet I found an article "How to replace a Morphix kernel with a custom one" at http://www.geocities.com/g1powermac/kernel.html The author says that it can only be made with 2.4 kernels, as 2.6 does not support translucency. If it's so, then how can "MorphixBase-0.5-pre6.iso" use 2.6 kernel ? What should I do ? The question is: Is it possible what I'm trying to do ? Do you guys have any link or file that can send my to enlight my ideas ? Any suggestions will be very appreciated. Thank you Gabriel. |

Technically this creates some fun for me. As there has been a interesting new piece of law in the UK. http://www.theregister.com/2006/01/26/uk_computer_crime_revamp/ "Clause 35 of the bill contains provisions to ban the development, ownership and distribution of so-called "hacker tools" " So now the law is in force. http://www.publications.parliament.uhttp://www.publications.parliament.uk/p= a/cm200506/cmbills/119/06119.27-33.html#j383Ak/pa/cm200506/cmbills/119/0611= 9.27-33.html#j383A 3A Making, supplying or obtaining articles for use in offence under section 1 or 3 (1) A person is guilty of an offence if he makes, adapts, supplies or offers to supply any article=97 (a) knowing that it is designed or adapted for use in the course of =09or in connection with an offence under section 1 or 3; or Further work on Morphix means I am breaking the Law. So after my next commit, I should hand myself in to the Police. :) By the way - My MP was on the Standing Committee :- http://www.westminsterwatch.co.uk/cgi-local/zshowmp.cgi?runmode=3Ddev&mp=3D= 5391 I wrote and had meeting my MP, whilst the Bill was going through our Parliament, who said she goes blank on computers and does not understand them much. http://www.barwap.com/blog/?article=3D171 So can't wait to get arrested! It's a security Live CD, mainly focused on the Nessus network scanner published by the German BSI (Federal Office for Information Security). If you are interested the Live CD and the matching source CDs are available here: (the i18n and docs on the CD are German only) http://www.bsi.de/produkte/boss/index.htm#download2 Thanks to everyone helping, especially for the support with collecting the sources. cheers sascha =2D-=20 Sascha Wilde Intevation GmbH wi...@in... int...@in... http://www.intevation.de/~wilde/ http://www.intevation.de/ |

This shoulD be fixed in morphix-base-scripts (0.5-63) See http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1589476&group_id=71814&atid=532548 > > x-window-system-core xfce4 xlibmesa3-dri xlibmesa3-glu xilbmesa3-gl > glutg3 mesa-utils mesademos mozilla-firefox morphix-init-scripts Make you you have the latest morphix-init > morphix-init-lite morphix-init-light ? Do not use MorphixMini-XHack.xml with the latest morphix-init 0.5-63. This has come up a prevoius post to this list. The achieve is available on sourceforge. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=31034575&forum_id=33052 http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=31034574&forum_id=33052 Regards, Brendan (Sorry did 1st reply not on list) |

Hi there morphix friends ! I've played with morphix a few months ago. Everything was perfect! Today I decided to make a new morph, based on the MorphixBase-0.5-pre6.iso image. I just repeated the process I used to create the old one and then, after creating the iso I run qemu -cdrom mymorph.iso It starts to load but, when it tries to load X, the following error comes up: (EE) Failed to load module "bitmap" (modules does not exist, 0) (EE) Failed to load module "pcidata" (modules does not exist, 0) Fatal server error: Unable to load required base modules, Exiting ... I used the following packages (as I used with sucess on the previous release of my morph): x-window-system-core xfce4 xlibmesa3-dri xlibmesa3-glu xilbmesa3-gl glutg3 mesa-utils mesademos mozilla-firefox morphix-init-scripts morphix-init-lite Can anyone give me a hint ? Thank you very much Gabriel Marques. p.s. Cheers Alex ! :) |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 You're completely correct, it's back to C programming 101 for me. Thanks for the fix. I'll commit the changes and upload a new MI package shortly. There has been some development on a MI-replacement in python, but it's not production-quality yet. Then again, looking at the original MI code from 3 years ago, the term 'production-quality' is rather flexible. Hello, I've been experiencing a segmentation fault when I try and run=20 morphixinstaller on my system. After carefully examining the code, the=20 segmentation fault appeared to occur in the BuildRoot function of instlib.c= =20 where the code is examining the existing fstab file. I was able to confirm= =20 that was the section with the problem by deleting the existing /etc/fstab o= n=20 my system. With no /etc/fstab, the code skips the section and doesn't=20 trigger the segmentation fault. While I'm far from a competent C programmer, I did notice that the int used= as=20 a loop counter (gint j) is not initialized in the code. When I changed the= =20 line 517 of instlib.c from: gint i, j; to: gint i =3D 0; gint j =3D 0; the problem went away. I know I saw at least one other user on the forums with this issue. Are th= ere=20 any reasons we shouldn't make this change? Regards, Mark Gannon =2D-=20 "I am an idealist. I don't know where I am going,=20 but I am on my way."=20 =2D Carl Sandburg=20 |

I guess because of the same reasons cdrecord has been renamed to wodim; the author wanted to change the license to something weird, and Debian had been problems with him for a while I gather, so they forked the cd tools, renaming them in the process. Hi Morphers, as of today, Debian sid has seen the following name changes: * Packages renamed: cdda2wav -> icedax, mkisofs -> genisoimage, + cdda2wav and mkisofs retained as dummy packages. [from the changelog of cdrkit (9:1.1.0-1) unstable]. As there still are the dummy packages, my bet is our tools will continue working, but it's something to keep our eye on when weird build bugs start showing up. Besides, after Etch's release, I guess the dummy packages will be removed at some time.
