Well ... I've just unpacked the mpc-0.6 source tarball again, and it now 
builds fine.
Apparently, I must have made some change to the mpc-0.6 source that  I had 
originally unpacked - and that change was stuffing things up for the 64-bit 
build (but not the 32-bit build).
