Hi, unfortunately I do not run Fedora, but I have the same Intel Chip on my mac. I can't really interpret your output but compared to mine: (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so (II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 1.3.0, module version = 2.1.1 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.2 > The Xorg log says: > > (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so > (II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation" > compiled for 1.5.2, module version = 2.5.0 > Module class: X.Org Video Driver > ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 4.1 I use an older driver. So maybe try to downgrade. > It seems that the intel driver still uses the BIOS for initialisation (a > guess). I thought it was fixed long ago. The other drivers (fbdev, vesa) > loaded also fails miserably. Didn't know about that. I use Bootcamp and everything worked/s just fine. Last but not least: Double-check your xorg.conf, it usually solved my problems with xserver. cu HARALD |

Hi, I recently installed Fedora 10, and I asked specifically not to configure any boot manager, as I feared I couldn't boot Mac OS X any more (after reading <http://www.michaeldehaan.net/?p=794>). But it didn't happened. Unfortunately, I didn't have any means to boot Fedora. Still, Anaconda installed for me in <fedora>/boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.efi a version of GRUB 0.9 patched for EFI. After copying it to my EFI partition, I could boot Fedora. I used the following commands: root (hd0,3) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 root=/dev/sda4 video=efifb ro initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.img Fedora boots correctly (I can tell because of the logs I can get using my other Linux installation), but I see nothing. Or more precisely, after GRUB loads the kernel, I see a pure white screen. So I guess I don't have any virtual console. After a few moment, the screen start blinking, I can tell it's X.org starting, unfortunately it fails and I have to reboot. The Xorg log says: (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so (II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 1.5.2, module version = 2.5.0 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 4.1 (II) intel: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810, i810-dc100, i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM/855GM, 865G, 915G, E7221 (i915), 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 945GME, 965G, G35, 965Q, 946GZ, 965GM, 965GME/GLE, G33, Q35, Q33, Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset, Intel Integrated Graphics Device, G45/G43, Q45/Q43, G41 (II) intel(0): Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) 945GM (--) intel(0): Chipset: "945GM" (--) intel(0): Linear framebuffer at 0x80000000 (--) intel(0): IO registers at addr 0x90380000 (WW) intel(0): libpciaccess reported 0 rom size, guessing 64kB (EE) intel(0): Bad VBT signature (WW) intel(0): VBIOS initialization failed. (==) intel(0): Using EXA for acceleration (II) intel(0): 2 display pipes available. ... It seems that the intel driver still uses the BIOS for initialisation (a guess). I thought it was fixed long ago. The other drivers (fbdev, vesa) loaded also fails miserably. Can you see anything that could help me ? If you have Fedora installed, where is your configuration file (I can't get GRUB to load the configuration file automatically). Are your GRUB command lines similar (to be found in menu.lst). Thanks. No, the subwoofer does not work due to lack of driver support. and you are right that most people do not notice. They usually just complain that the sound is "tinny". I will see if I can track someone down at Ubuntu that has worked with ALSA on Macs before and see if he can help. cyberdork33 schrieb: > That is how we are handling it in Ubuntu as well... > https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook_Santa_Rosa#Fix%20Sound There's no difference to what I tried. Do you get the subwoofer working this way? I'm coming to the impression that many Linux users just don't notice the lack of the subwoofer. They're confident with ANY sound coming out the speakers. Please take a sound file and play it in Linux and in MacOSX. I don't even have to listen carefully to notice the difference. I wonder if someone will complete the driver. If I look on the ALSA website it does not really look like progress is going on. The bug report is also already 4 months old and the affected MacBooks are around at least since February. I would of course fix the driver, but I don't speak C. Hi, I've got things working with options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3 on stock Debian 2.6.26 kernel. However, I recently upgraded to Intrepid and although there are numerous improvement I find that sound is no longer happy about suspending to ram. Whether this is related to the improved pulseaudio support (I've tried variations on oss, alsa and pulse) or something with flash 10 (came in the package) is not clear to me. Typically what happens is that if I have Firefox running with a flash playing something (say youtube) when I suspend (standard stuff to ram from the PowerManager applet), I will have to kill Firefix in order to get fully working audio again (with pulseaudio I can get other apps happy and keep using Firefox in "mute mode"). alsa force-reload does the trick. Anyone got this fully working? Possibly related: after a handful or so suspend-to-ram I often get duplicated batteries and networks in their respective gnome applet - at worst Ihve had 5 of each. The appear mostly harmless, but I suspect that this is the reason the Network Manger sometimes fail to auto-find network. Again, I never saw any of this in Hardy. All advice welcome / Jonas |

Hi everybody, after using PPC Macs under Linux for 5 years, I bought myself now a new MacBook. It's the latest white one, calling itself "MacBook4,1". I got most of the things to working, but my biggest sorrow remains the sound. Sound works, but it's very low volume and at least through the built in speakers it sounds like through a telefone without any bass. In MacOSX it sounds fine. I have searched the web for the issue and found many similar complaints, but no solution. Does anyone know about the current state of this? Geoffrey, I can't speak for Linux, but you can be sure that any product Wiebetech sells has robust support for Mac OS X. James Wiebe has been on the Mac since the very beginning. http://www.wiebetech.com/products/TeraCard_Express34.php Tell them Mike Crawford sent you - I used to write custom firmware for their DriveDocks. To figure out whether a card will work on Linux, ask Wiebetech what the controller chip is in their card, then consult the Linux SATA page: http://linux-ata.org/driver-status.html I've heard that too about SIIG - that they're Windows-only. I'm very surprised they don't support other platforms, as they have a wide array of I/O products. Surely they must have the resources to hire Mac and Linux driver developers. This change works when booting my Linux system from VMWare. Yes, you can boot a system from a real partition using VMWare. But the same problem is present if I boot from rEFIt. In this case I have to edit the file /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf to set MODULES=dep and regenerate the initrd.img file using: sudo update-initramfs -k 2.6.27-1-amd64 -u -v It looks like the BIOS provided by the iMac firmware is less "complete" than the BIOS provided by VMWare. Adding the option "large-memory" in /etc/lilo.conf solved the problem. See Debian bug #479607 for example. I just noticed something else, the problem doesn't seems too related to suspending. I just plugged out the power while charging and I notice now the battery status is lost. I don't really understand ... Anyway, mere rebooting doesn't work, I really need to bot Mac OS X to restore the battery state. Perhaps I should just ask the LKML about it... Hi, Since several days, I have regularly some problems with the battery status (the little thing that tells me if my battery is full or near empty). At boot it works just well. Sometimes, after suspend, the information is lost (so I don't know the battery level). The kernel just says 0: $ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state ~ present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: discharging present rate: 0 mW remaining capacity: 0 mWh present voltage: 0 mV I haven't made extensive tests for now, so it's just some introductory message and I want to know if someone else have similar problems. I suspect some of these may have an effect: - very long suspend time (I juwt woke up my laptop from 24h of sleep and I just noticed again the problem) - if the state of the power has changed during the sleep (example, the laptop was charging before sleeping and I plugged the power cord before it woke up, or during the sleep, it has been charged but the power wasn't present both at sleep time and wakeup time or other strange combinaison) Until now, I assumed that to fix it I had to reboot under Mac OS X to reset the battery state, I know it works but i haven't recently tested if just normal reboot from linux to linux is enough or not ... have to test again. My linux kernel: $ uname -a Linux kylae 2.6.27-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Oct 12 15:16:25 CEST 2008 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux My laptop: MacBook2,1 Mildred -- Mildred Ki'Lya ╭───────── mildred593@online.fr ────────── │ Jabber, GoogleTalk: <mi...@ja...> │ Site: <http://ki.lya.online.fr> GPG ID: 9A7D 2E2B │ Fingerprint: 197C A7E6 645B 4299 6D37 684B 6F9D A8D6 9A7D 2E2B |
