Hi Geoffrey, I must admit I didn't follow the whole of your story. But, why do you exactly stick to 2.6.24 when more recent kernel versions are available. I belief that since 2.6.28 no further patches are required. At least that's what I experienced on my macmini and mbp. However, if you find a kernel-config of your actual system you can always try a "make oldconfig" first and than, as you are just trying to get your sound right, set the appropriate flags in the Intel-HDA section. Furthermore, DO NOT FORGET to keep a copy of your old kernel linked in your grub/lilo config. I use to compile my kernels myself since a long time, and belief me, Murphy’s Law and kernel compiling are closely related. Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to ask! I've started going through the kernel configuration via 'make xconfig'. It's been a while since I've built a kernel from scratch, and this process is taking a while as I review the various options. I'm hoping someone is willing to send me their config, rather then spend the time going through this process. I've finally gotten tired of not having sound, so I figured I'd bite the bullet and build my kernel to support the mac patches. I've just downloaded mactel-patches-2.6.24.tar.gz, so I'm assuming that I simply download the latest 2.6.24 kernel, apply the patches and the build my kernel. Pointers to the contrary or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -- Until later, Geoffrey Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin |

Hello everyone, I'm running Debian Lenny on my MacBook first generation for a while. Since maybe 2 weeks, I'm experiencing crashes of Xorg, and no possibility to restart X before a reboot. I hope it is a software bug and not a hardware problem (I have no patience to stay under MacOS X until it crashes...), but if other persons are experiencing such problems, it may help to do a bug report to debian. My xorg intel driver package version is : xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.3.2-2+lenny6 I'm not running compiz, and it happens quite randomly, but really oft (2 times a day or more). I noticed that when I'm using my external monitor (1600x1200), it happens quite ofter as with the integrated LCD (but it happens also). I'll do a bug report to debian when I'll have more info, but comments are welcome ! Pierre |

(on a clean system(debootstrap)); I usually just apt-get powersaved then adduser "yourename" powerdev; then all is good. (issues: when running anything with flashplayer do a powersave -e Powersave; powersave -l); then you should have the fans under-control. regards; Justin P. Mattock |

I throttle the card using radeontool ...thanx for any suggestions I guess this is no real help, but for reference I can say that the fans on my ATI-based MBP (2,2) were also acting up now and then. I didn't boot into OSX a lot, so where that is related I have no idea. However, I can say that my current MacBookPro4,1 (nVidia based) is a LOT more sane when it comes to fans - and even when they spin up (due to occasional high load) they don't make nearly as much noise. On the downside, I never had any "applesmc: wait status failed" messages on the old system, whereas it seems that polling this info (fans, temps etc) fail - and then retry successfully - quite often now. I don't know whether this is actual HW differences or if the driver just works differently in newer kernels. BTW: I have not booted OSX on this box for at least 3 months. Hope this was of some use for someone / Jonas |

hey every1 - occasionally if I do not boot to osx for an extended period of time (roughly a month), the fan behavior (and likely also throttling) seems to get very weird ( the fans randomly rev up , the temps seem to spike , and the whole setup gets really unstable) .. after i boot to osx the problem seems to go away .. is there any way to preserve the nvram values that osx likes to set ? I'm using 2.6.25 with mactel patches and version 8.51.3 of fglrx .. I throttle the card using radeontool ...thanx for any suggestions stan |

As for wpa_supplicant, try using NetworkManager Whatever ifupdown is using causes wpa_supplicant to work properly, as opposed to wpa_supplicant -Dwext -i* -c *. maybe bcm does work. have you tried lkml? They can help you allot more than I. regards; Justin P. Mattock |

doesn't anyone else find this strange as well? i use ndis for connecting to wireless on my mbp4,1 on 2.6.27 through network manager... however the access points need to be visible since i can not connect to a hidden ssid still... this forces me to the shell to start wpa_supplicant manually and wait several minutes till it finally connects, but i digress... so why is it that the bcm driver hasn't been sorted? you figure in today's world, even though its "unsecured", this would be a huge win to stabilize wireless... running one less service, ndis, is always a big a positive... call me crazy, but just the way osx comes in and out of sleep mode and reconnects to networks so rapidly lately has been very attractive... if osx does it, why can't we? i don't see why not, we're a brilliant community... its the same hardware osx is using, theoretically we should be able to replicate the speed... just dreaming a little dream... cheers paul On 01/09/2009 12:14 PM, Justin P.
