Anand, No worries about the delayed reply -- we've been severely time-limited=20= on our end. It sounds like you've been successful in integrating 3/5=20 of your original applications so far: everything except for qmail and=20 Exchange. Congratulations! You're the first to do anything meaningful=20= with MACS with so little help! It says much about your ability, and=20 hopefully a little about MACS' maturity. =3D) To answer your question, what you're asking for is single-sign-on=20 between Windows and the web. With MACS, this involves capturing the=20 session key at system login and reusing it from a web browser. I'm not=20= familiar with the details of the Windows login mechanics, but this=20 sounds like it could only be accomplished with a customized agent on=20 the Windows machine. Either a browser plugin that retrieves the=20 username and password used to log in to Windows somehow and logs in=20 automatically (if that's possible!) or a system plugin that (for=20 example) records the session key appropriately in the browser's cookie=20= file. Unfortunately, we don't have access to a full Windows development=20 environment at the moment. If you are willing and able to hack this=20 up, we'd be pleased and grateful to offer all the help we can. Cheers! mds On Sunday, Oct 26, 2003, at 23:52 US/Eastern, Anand Sharma wrote: > Dear Mr. Santana, > > I am sorry for not replying earlier as I was on a week's leave. There is some good information at http://macs.sf.net/docs/ The technical white paper would be especially enlightening. I'm afraid there aren't any very detailed HOWTOs, yet. > As desired, here is a brief description of my actual network: > [...] I'm going to describe what I understand your network to be: 1. For logging into the windows desktop, folks use their normal NT account on normal NT domain servers. 2. For reading mail, some folks use their normal NT account to access exchange, while others use a LDAP-based account to access qmail. 3. For accessing your custom web apps, folks use a custom MySQL-based account. 4. For printing, some folks use a standalone NT server with local accounts, while others use a standalone Samba server, also with local accounts. So there are 5 places where account information is stored: NT domain server, LDAP, MySQL, NT print server, and Samba print server. All these repositories need to be kept in sync. And there's no one place for users to manage their account(s) -- eg, change passwords, update addresses, etc. The goal is to have a single place to manage account information, and to enable SSO as much as possible. Centralized management reduces the burden on you, the admin, while SSO reduces the burden on users. > I hope this gives a brief idea of my network to you and would help you in > solving my query. The first step is to figure out if you need more than one user repository. Do all your users have NT accounts, for example, or LDAP accounts? If so, then all your authentication can happen against NT, or LDAP. If, for example, some webapp users have no accounts except in MySQL, we'll probably need to deploy support for multiple repositories. This is what I meant when I asked, "Where is the user information stored?" Is any one source of user information enough? Once we know which source(s) we need to support, we can get that set up. The second step is to add support for actual applications. The Apache-based webapps are probably easiest. See http://macs.sf.net/docs/apxs/ for details on configuring the Apache module. (And feel free to post specific questions here!) You can probably have true, fully transparent SSO between all your webapps without too much hassle. Setting up other applications is complicated by the fact that we've not built support yet for everything we'd like to. Qmail, for example, would require an auth module. Also, depending on the details of how your distribute the user accounts, some applications would not need to go through MACS at first. The NT print server, for example, might access the NT Domain accounts directly. However, this creates a problem with user account mobility. I would suggest you use LDAP for your main account repository. Replace NT domain controllers with Samba, and authenticate desktop, Exchange, and printers against these. For qmail, you could use LDAP directly, or write the small auth module to use MACS. I'm getting long-winded, so I'll stop now. Let us know if you can make any progress! Cheers, mds |

Dear Mr. Santana, Thank you for your kind reply. I have been unsuccessfully looking for a Deployment Guide / FAQs pertaining to MACS SSO. I would be thankful if you could point me to some resources. As desired, here is a brief description of my actual network: =D8 I have a mix of NT & Linux based servers, while the clients are primarily NT based.=20 =D8 The NT servers have been configured in Domain Architecture with trusts established between certain Domains. Clients are distributed in these Domains. Some clients use MS Exchange based Mail services, while others use qmail-OpenLDAP services.=20 =D8 Linux servers host in-house developed J2EE web applications for workflow. =D8 Since each user has to login into multiple resources everyday, it becomes cumbersome for me to administer & support these guys. Therefore, I have been experimenting with SSO solutions that I could easily deploy to ease the situation as far as possible. Servers:=20 =B7 Windows NT: o NT domain authentication - MS Exchange 5.5 Server. o NT stand-alone server - print server with local user accounts. =B7 RedHat Linux: o RedHat Linux 7.3 OpenLDAP authentication - qmail-ldap server. o RedHat Linux 7.3 Samba server - print server with local user accounts.=20 o RedHat Linux 7.1 MySQL authentication - some in-house developed J2EE web applications. Clients: =B7 A mixture of Windows NT Workstation 4 & Windows 2000 Professional. This is how currently I have distributed authentication in my network. How can MACS be used in this regard to create Single Sign-On environment? It would be fine if that requires migrating all the user accounts to LDAP (preferable OpenLDAP on RedHat Linux 7.3).=20 And yes, by Single Sign-On, I mean that logging into one application automatically logs you into all of them. I hope this gives a brief idea of my network to you and would help you in solving my query. Warm Regards Anand Sharma. On Wed, 01 Oct 2003 23:41:22 -0400, "Mario D. Anand, Sorry for the delayed response. My machine was in the shop and it shouldn't happen again. About your question, the right answer depends on your setup. For starters, if you could illuminate the following, it would give me a good idea: Where is the user information stored? Are they NT users, linux users, or users in LDAP? Or some combinations? How portable do you want the user information to be? For example, if they are NT users, do you want it to be very easy to switch over to LDAP, or anything else? Also, what do you mean by Single Sign On? Do you mean that logging into one application automatically logs you into all of them? Or do you mean that your user information comes from the same place for all your apps? I really hope we can help you get MACS up and working for you. Cheers! mds Anand Sharma wrote: > Hi, > > I am currently evaluating MACS on a test setup. > [...] > What I am trying to figure out is what next? Hi, I am currently evaluating MACS on a test setup. I have a RedHat Linux 7.3 box on which I have installed all the pre-requisites (OpenSSL-0.9.7b, MM-1.1.3, MySQL-3.23.49-3, Apache_1.3.28, mod_ssl-2.8.15-1.3.28, mod_perl-1.28 and all the required perl modules downloaded using "perl -MCPAN -e shell" command as stated in the macs-0.8-beta INSTALL file. I have also installed homac-1.0-Alpha1 software. Now I am able to get the macs home page i.e. http://localhost/macs and also all the internal pages by logging in using User:macs and Password:macs as stated in the above mentioned document. What I am trying to figure out is what next? In my test setup, I am having a web server (Apache on Linux), a mail server (qmail-ldap as well as plain qmail on Linux) and a Windows NT print server. Can any one help me out in integrating single sign-on for all these servers/services using MACS? What should I do on the MACS server or the back-end servers or on client systems for my clients to authenticate and access the servers using MACS? Best Regards. Hello, all. As you may know, 0.8 is slated for release on August 4. Medley Conductor 1.0 will be based on MACS 0.8, and will be also be announced August 4. As it happens, Linux World starts the same day, and some Medley Software folks will be hanging out there for the week, including Blake and me! So come to Linux World and look for the baseball shirts that say "Medley Conductor" on them. Afterwards, we'll buy the first round for the Conductor release party. Cheers! mds -- Mario D. All, 0.7-alpha is out. Look for it on sf.net. The TODO file in this release has a roadmap for 0.8-beta. That's right, we've pushed beta out one release. Blake, you're working on the 4 biggies, right? Fine-grained access control, profile-based access control, distributed servers, and audit trail. I'll keep hacking at the docs, the clients (especially Java,) and the build system. Target date for 0.8-beta: August 30. Enjoy! mds |

Excellent work! The LIA seems to be broken (at least macs/macs test/test and guest/guest don't work.) Also, what's up the "ALL" method? Once you get some sleep and get the kinks worked out, we'll need some docs. Then a day or less of pre-release config/compile/install checking and 0.7 is out the door! =) The DotGNU guys are anxiously awaiting. mds PS, is it just me, or did sourceforge start appending spam to mailing list traffic?! The core GUIs are almost working again, all chages are checked in. Check it out for yourself at: http://spoon.e3rpt.com/macs. I was able to get the resource manager to create a resource, and set permissions on it, although the nav seems to be having trouble determining what I am and amn't allowed to see and change resource wise. Will look into that tomorrow, when my eye lids are less heavy. |

Here's an interesting project we should integrate with macs at some time: http://dazuko.org/ it's a linux kernel module that does run time file ACLs. |

Here's a free (GPL) RADIUS server implementation that has input plugins: http://www.freeradius.org/ We definitely should integrate macs with this as RADIUS is an established standard for single sign-on applications. |

Here's a good web app "driver" they call it. http://uttu.tamu.edu/ It seems a good framework for our web needs. Works with the Mason components we already have in place. I'm not going to involve it in my current project, as I've already rolled my own little bastard framework to use for this app. It would only cost me time to integrate Uttu into this, but I will add my improvements back into macs from this project later. Uttu should save us some time, and it's one less piece of code we're responsible for maintaining. |
