I did want to post that I've made a little headway... I tried using the following two lines for devices: blkdev: /dev/hdc -cd blkdev: /media/os9 -rw #which I mounted from /dev/hda5 Now when I run startmol --cdboot I get the tan screen with the MOL logo (penguin hugging the apple) and it freezes there. I can hear the CD spin up... but nothing happens. After pressing Atl-Ctrl-F7 to kick out of the screen, the terminal window shows: root@UbuntuPPC7:/dev# startmol --cdboot Mac-on-Linux 0.9.72 [Jun 12 2007 00:36] Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Samuel Rydh Starting MOL session 0 Running in PowerPC 7400 mode, 256 MB RAM Timebase: 24.90 MHz, Bus: 99.63 MHz, Clock: 450 MHz Using USB mouse on /dev/input/mice OHCI USB controller registered Fullscreen video on VT 9. To boot from cd, you need to pass the --cdboot flag with startmol in order to boot from the install disk. You will want to make sure that you have somewhere to install it (and include a blkdev entry in your molrc.macos). Also, you will want the blkdev entry for the CD-ROM to reflect the actually device reference (/dev/hd?) and not the mount-point. Hello all, I'm writing because I've ran into issues with running MOL 0.9.72 on Ubuntu 7.04. I went through installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu on my dual G4 which went fine. I installed all the nessecary files such as autoconf, m4, libncurses, etc. Then I extract the gzip file and do the following steps: 1.) ./autogen.sh 2.) make (including the make menuconfig part) 3.) make install 4.) run molvconfig Afterwards I immediately go and configure my /etc/mol/molrc.macos config file to show 256mb of memory and to adjust the disk devices that it can access. I did have to temporarily disable the included molrc.net file because I was having tun0 errors, but for now I'm not worrying about that. Instead when I run 'startmol' and have a Mac OS9 disc in there... the screen goes to full screen for a brief second but kicks me back out to the terminal window with an error that no SCSI devices could be found. I watch and the CDRom is not even accessed during this time. At first I figured it was a configuration error, so I checked and my molrc.macos file references blkdev: /media/cdrom0 -cd I tried using paths like /dev/hd(x), /media/cdrom, you name it. Nothing happened. Does anyone have any ideas??? Hi, I'm trying to get a CD burner to work with MoL 0.9.72/MacOSX on my AmigaOne (kernel 2.6.16.49) with Debian Etch. The drive is recognized by MoL and MacOSX, if I use the ide-scsi emulation (which is considered to be deprecated), but MacOSX does not detect it as a CD burner. I don't have much experience with MacOSX, thus I would be grateful for a hint. Also there is a slight problem, if I try to boot from the MacOSX install DVD (startmol -X --cdboot). As long as there is no disc in the CD burner (with ide-scsi emulation), MoL/BootX stops booting. Probably because the CD burner shows up as the first device in the list of SCSI devices. List of SCSI devices: 1. SCSI device: 0,0,0 (CD burner - /dev/hdd with ide-scsi emulation, AFAIK becomes /dev/srcd0) 2. /dev/cdrom (normal DVD drive - /dev/hdc handled by ide-cd driver) The CD boot device is defined like this in molrc.osx: blkdev: /dev/cdrom -cd ${cdboot} Any ideas? After building svn code to get the X11 window mode working, I noticed MOL is much slower to boot OS X Panther than 0.9.72--even if I disable X11 support in the build and boot only to console mode. Maybe this is a known limitation of svn, but also maybe all is not well, as I stated in my last post to the list. I guess I'll stick with 0.9.72 for now as I'd rather have higher performance than X11 windows. Let me know if I can help with any validation or debug. However, when starting in X11 mode, I get a white X window until the OS X desktop comes up (no Tux hugging the apple splashscreen). If I set molrc.video to start in console mode with the line, start_on_console: yes then I get the Tux hugging the apple splashscreen. Regardless, I can switch back and forth between X11 and console modes and all is well so it appears there may be a bug in the released tarball version of mol. -Cal ____________________________________________________________________________________ Park yourself in front of a world of choices in alternative vehicles. I compiled 0.9.72 on my Mac mini under Ubuntu Feisty. I can't seem to get X11 video support working. I have a guest Mac OS install of 10.3.9 Panther with the display set to 1024x768x75. The X11 host is running 1440x900x75. In molrc.video, I have: resolution: 640/480/75 depth: 32 and I've tried other "hinted" video modes in molrc.video and guest modes < 1440x900 I've also tried setting the X11 host to 1280x1024. When I try to force X11 output using enable_console_video: no start_on_console: no autoswitch_console: no I get "No video modes at all was found - exiting" calinb@ppc:~/mol-0.9.72$ Mac-on-Linux 0.9.72 [Jun 3 2007 15:47] Copyright (C) 1997-2004 Samuel Rydh Starting MOL session 1 Running in PowerPC 7400 mode, 512 MB RAM Timebase: 41.62 MHz, Bus: 166.48 MHz, Clock: 1416 MHz Using USB mouse on /dev/input/mice OHCI USB controller registered Video driver(s): No video modes at all was found - exiting cleaning up... Terminating threads... DONE I've compiled with and without XDGA support, just to see if it makes a difference. I quite happy with the Console FB performance but would like to try X11 windowed mode too. Any help or suggestions are much appreciated. Also, could someone please explain what is lost in going to 10.4 Tiger and broken MOL "acceleration?" Hi everybody, My beige G3 has the usual problem with console video, and I thought I could use XDGA instead, even if it is slower. But it wasn't that easy... I suspect that XDGA became obsolete (in MOL) before anyone really tested it. To get into it, xvideo has to be disabled. And to be certain that it's actually used, console video has to be disabled. Anyway, in my system (Ubuntu Dapper, xorg 7.0.0), the XDGA modes seem to begin from 1, and not 0 (as MOL assumes). The result is that the resolution is not what the OS expects, f.ex. I only saw upper left corner of my desktop (320x240 of 1024x768). I simple patch made it work. I'll send it to the mac-on-linux-devel list. I hope someone else could try it. Risto |

You need to change the setup files to remove the check that it is performing, it's just text. I am looking into a solution for resolving this in the future, but I don't have a fix for MOL right now. -Joe |

There is someone who has gotten MOL running on the AmigaOne in Linux, (I've integrated the patches), but I'm not sure if he's interested in getting that working. -Joe |

Hello there! I was wandering if someone has tried to boot MAC ON LINUX using an AMIGA ONE ROM in order tu boot AMIGA OS4: it's a rea shame that, being souch a great OS and power-pc based, there's NO HARDWARE to run this jewel on (the AMIGA ONE is no longer produced, and mine died two months ago). So what about AMIGA OS4 support in MAC ON LINUX? Well, I extracted the amiga one rom and tried to boot myself, but it didn't work. Any ideas/comments? Thanks! > Ok, when I umounted the MacOS partition, I got the happy Mac.....Yeah! Yes, that's a requirement, the MacOS partition cannot be mounted in Linux at the same time as it's beeing booted by MOL. > Then I got this message: > > This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest > installer to update the disk for this model. > > I'm going to grab the 9.2 update and try that rom next. You should not need a Boot-ROM on newer MacOS versions (8.6+) since the Boot-ROM is stored in the System folder of the MacOS version you're trying to boot. -Joe |

In the main source tree, there's a folder called "Doc". In that there's a document called Boot-ROM which explains how this works. However, if you're trying to boot System 8.6 or newer, you do not need the Boot-ROM. > Also, I seem to remember from trying to run MoL before that the Beige G3 > wouldn't work. Greetings. I'm trying to get Mac-on-Linux to work on my son's Wallstreet II, G3/266/1M, 320MB RAM. OS is openSUSE v10.0, kernel v2.6.13-15.13-default. I've tried to use the Mac-on-Linux included in the distro, but it won't start MacOS. It's v0.9.70. It tells me that it could not open rom-image 'rom/rom.8500. I've tried installing the SVN with no luck. It fails at: checklist.c:291: error: ?KEY_RIGHT? undeclared (first use in this function) make[2]: *** [../../obj-ppc/build/config/lxdialog/checklist.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [sub-lxdialog-all] Error 2 make *** [do-bootstrap] Error 2 Trying to install the v0.9.72_pre2 archive from sourceforge fails at the same point as well. Evidently I need a utility to copy my system's rom. However, I can't find any reference to how to do it. Also, I seem to remember from trying to run MoL before that the Beige G3 wouldn't work. The Wallstreet is basically the same machine, so is this going to also be a problem?
