Well, shame on me, but at the moment there's very little time for lcd4linux. My son (who is getting 14 months these days, funny how time flies!) and my real-life job is eating all my time, and I try to cath at least a few hours of sleep every day (I know this is wasted time, but... on the other hand, there may be some good drugs outta there :-) I don't think that the current CVS/SVN is ready for a new release (maybe I'm wrong, and I should follow the "release early, release often" advice) Can you tell me what exactly is the problem with GCC-4.1? Maybe I could just fix these bugs in the stable branch.... > On a side note, don't you think it would be a good idea to close the > list for non-subscribers, that would stop the big amount of spam coming > over it. Hmmm.... I think this is the same question as with the wiki: I think if I close it, there will be far less traffic (it's already (too) low traffic I think) Speaking for myself, if I want to report a bug or something similar to a project, and I need to be subscribed, I wont. But as always, YMMV. bye, Michael (who got up at 5am this morning, visiting a customer, returned home at 9pm, *not* seeing his son, going to bed now, to get up at 5am tomorrow, visiting another customer) -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |

Hello, I have a 20x4 lcd display (of course hd44780), my config looks like something here below (I know that it should be written in a different way, but now i really dont know how:): Widget Load1 { class 'Text' expression loadavg(1) prefix 'Load: ' # postfix loadavg(1)>1.0?'!':' ' width 10 precision 2 align 'L' update tick } Widget Load2 { class 'Text' expression loadavg(2) prefix ' ' width 5 precision 2 align 'L' update tick } Widget Load3 { class 'Text' expression loadavg(3) # postfix loadavg(1)>1.0?'!':' ' width 5 prefix ' ' precision 2 align 'L' update tick } Widget Eth0r { class 'Text' expression (netdev('eth0', 'Rx_bytes', 500)/1024 prefix 'Rx: ' postfix ' ' width 10 precision 0 align 'R' update tick } Widget Eth0t { class 'Text' expression (netdev('eth0', 'Tx_bytes', 500)/1024 prefix 'Tx: ' postfix ' ' width 10 precision 0 align 'R' update tick } Widget Uptime { class 'Text' expression uptime('%d days %H:%M:%S') width 20 align 'R' prefix 'Up ' update 1000 } Layout L20x4 { Row1 { Col1 'Uptime' } Row2 { Col1 'Load1' Col11 'Load2' Col16 'Load3' } Row3 { # Col5 exec('cat /home/hardtmuth/my_files/temp_temp/lala, 1000) } Row4 { Col1 'Eth0r' Col11 'Eth0t' } } Display 'HD44780-generic' Layout 'L20x4' Variables { tick 500 tack 100 minute 60000 } and the problem is that there is something wrong with the first line on LCD. Now I have on the first line 12:07 some spaces and at the end of the line 6:03:15 (counting up - its uptime). I see that its really messed up, because there should be up days 0 6:03:15. When i`ve uncommented Row3 / Col5 with that exec formula, the uptime line is displayed correctly. Why there is some connections between I and III line? sometime i`ve noticed that when i start lcd4linux, the display looks good, then i restart lcd4linux and first line is messed up. Next i`ve problem with reading data from file, i`ve temperature in one file. I`m trying do read it with exec and cat, no results only some garbage: sh: -c: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `)' sh: -c: line 1: `cat /home/hardtmuth/my_files/temp_temp/temp_raw.txt, 1000)' exec error: could not read from pipe 'cat /home/hardtmuth/my_files/temp_temp/temp_raw.txt, 1000)': Success and doing this in a different way, by file::readline, i get: Evaluator: unknown function 'file::readline' in <file::readline('/home/hardtmuth/my_files/temp_temp/temp_raw.txt', 1000)> what am i doing wrong? Should I pass when i was compiling lcd4linux arguments with plugins to include or by default all plugins are compiled in? Sorry for huge post, but i think that posting in one huge post is better that few smaller :). Thanks for help. |

Well, the underscore should be a standard ASCII char, so I don't understand why it should not be displayed correctly. Have you got a datasheet for your display? Normally a character map is part of the documentation, have a look at it... btw, how do you access the environment variables? is there a 'getenv()' plugin? Hi, I've just downloaded the latest revision from CVS, and tried to configure lcd4linux, but I can't make a usable lcd4linux.conf... In /var/log/messages I get this: Oct 5 18:26:06 calavera ppdev0: registered pardevice And nothing displayed on the lcd (20x2). The cables are good, because I checked it with my friends machine. Any suggestions? Thanks before, juhu PS: I haven't used lcd4linux for 7-8 months. I'm running gentoo, with 2.6.17-beyond-2.2. I double-checked the kernel configuration, so parallel port support is present in my kernel. Here is my lcd4linux.conf: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Display HD44780-generic { Driver 'HD44780' Model 'generic' Port '/dev/parport0' Size '20x2' } Widget OS { class 'Text' expression '*** '.uname('sysname').' Currently we have an really evil hack which greps in syslog for "timeout waiting for busy flag on controller" and terminates lcd4linux if found. as said, really evil. > At the moment there's kind of a fallback, which means that if the > busy-flag check fails several times, the HD44780 driver goes back into > normal unidirectional mode (using some worst-case delay values). Yes, I found that in the code. In principle, I could perhaps insert some exit(1) statements at some strategical point, but that's really hackish, and I wanted to consult this list before doing that. > But I'm afraid this check won't be sufficient: normally the display is > that fast (or the parport is that slow) that the first 'check-busy' test > reports the display as idle. I'd like to have some mechanism in lcd4linux, > which makes the daemon exit gracefully when there is no display on the > paralell port. > > Does lcd4linux offer something like that? Well, as usual, that depends. If you don't use busy-flag checking, the communication is pure unidirectional, and there's no way to detect wether there's a display connected or not. If you use the busy-flag, there's a possibility to read back at least some status information from the display. LCD4Linux uses this to test wether the display can accept a new command or not. At the moment there's kind of a fallback, which means that if the busy-flag check fails several times, the HD44780 driver goes back into normal unidirectional mode (using some worst-case delay values). But I'm afraid this check won't be sufficient: normally the display is that fast (or the parport is that slow) that the first 'check-busy' test reports the display as idle. And a successful busy check is done by testing some signals for logical 'high' (or 1), which is the default state if the pin is not connected (there's sort of a 'pull up resistor' built into the parallel port). I'll have to dig into the HD44780 specs to find out if there's another possibility to check for a connected display. We could implement such a test into the code (if there is one). bye, Michael -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |

Hi List, In our appliance, we have 2 variants: one with an HD44780 display and some machines without. I'd like to have some mechanism in lcd4linux, which makes the daemon exit gracefully when there is no display on the paralell port. Right, because the 'co' command will never ask for a passwort, but the 'login' command will. The documentation on the wiki says: LCD4Linux's CVS repository can be checked out through anonymous (pserver) CVS with the following instruction set: cvs -d:pserver:ano...@lc...:/cvsroot/lcd4linux login cvs -z9 -d:pserver:ano...@lc...:/cvsroot/lcd4linux co lcd4linux When prompted for a password for anonymous, simply press the Enter key. So you have to issue the 'login' command first. HTH, Michael -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |

Understood on the no time to migrate thing. It is difficult and time consuming to migrate repos I know. I tried using the command line cvs client but kept running into password prompts. sf.net offers anon access but I couldn't quite work that out so... For the sake of this list and future googlers here is what I did: rsync -av rsync://lcd4linux.cvs.sourceforge.net/cvsroot/lcd4linux/* . This worked out much better for me than CVS, and I got all of the files in the repo without complaint, except... All files were downloaded with ',v' appended to the filenames! So here is the one- liner I used to deal with that: perl -e 'foreach $old (glob "*,v"){$new = $old, $new =~ s/,v $//;rename $old, $new;}' Getting it to configure is a different story. I am still working on that. Right now I am getting errors indicating my 'missing script is either too old or missing'. Any ideas what that means? Well, I don't like the idea of tarballs, because they're out of date as soon as they are created :-) Please get yourself a CVS client and use the CVS repo. Basic CVS handling should be the same as with svn. bye, Michael -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |

Hi, Looking through the CVS repos on sf.net, I see that there are many many files that have been updated in the last few weeks, and last few months. I am curious why you are not including all of this stuff in the subversion repo in your trac pages? I work with svn on a daily basis and it would be a simple matter for me to tarball all of the current files (for anyone's benefit not just mine) if they were all in there. I am not as adept with CVS, indeed I don't even have an CVS client handy. Any plans to put your project in subversion? And how troublesome would it be for you to tarball the current working set for me to use? Thanks! Hi Michael, When you say use the CVS version, what do you mean? I looked in the SVN repo in yout trac page and it seems empty, also the tarball I got was from sourceforge as I recall and you mentioned not to use that site, right? Would you be so kind as to provide a link to the best tarball to use? The last I looked, the SuSE RPM was for lcd4linux .9 and not the newer .10. Thanks! I'd recommend you to use the CVS version anyway, cause some 635 issues have been solved there IIRC. > I am still interested in working with someone on putting together a > Fedora RPM for lcd4linux, so if anyone wants to collaborate on that > please let me know. More shortly. I'm a debian user, so I can't be of much help here.... but there's a SuSE RPM (don't know if Fedora and SuSE RPM's are compatible) Don't know if there are some "RPM sources" available in CVS.... bye, Michael -- Michael Reinelt <re...@eu...> http://home.pages.at/reinelt GPG-Key 0xDF13BA50 ICQ #288386781 |

Thanks for the response Michael. As it turns out I think the pharm spam is gone now so you must have found it. At one point there was nothing at all in the trac pages except links I was not interested in following, offering free [insert drug here]. Thanks for cleaning that up. I got the .10 tarball and did a quick ./configure and a quick make, bu the make terminated quickly with this: [root@localhost lcd4linux-0.10.0]# make gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -D_GNU_SOURCE -Wall -W -g -O2 -c drv_generic_i2c.c In file included from drv_generic_i2c.c:76: lcd4linux_i2c.h:81: error: array type has incomplete element type make: *** [drv_generic_i2c.o] Error 1 Looks like I have some work to do ;) As it happens I just got the unit with the LCD (20x4 Crystalfontz CFA-635) and I through Fedora on it very quickly with little thought to my eventual production environment. I just wanted to see what cool things I could do with it. Alas... I will rebuild the unit in my typical gui-less build and try it again. I am still interested in working with someone on putting together a Fedora RPM for lcd4linux, so if anyone wants to collaborate on that please let me know. More shortly.
