I don't have the Linux Magazin, is the article avaliable online? If you write a driver, could you please work on the CVS version? If you need assistance with CVS, let me know. If it works on the CVS version, send me a patch (if you don't know how to create a patch agains CVS, let me know). Hi, nice greetings to Graz (with the good "Debreziner mit Kreen" foodbar, down the Grazer Liesl). I worked and testet severeal different displays with lcd4linux, most of them worked really fine, but some of them (especially 4*20 versions) displayed "funny" characters on the display. The lcd4linux.conf has been edited, the remarks had been removes from needed rows, but the rows has been scrambled, (ROW1 is in ROW3, ROW2 is in ROW3..) and one row was missing. An also tested 40x4 display only worked with 2 rows, is the something else to configure?? If someone is able (and wants to) test and configure a dispaly with, 8 rows and 24 characters each row, feel free to mail me. Thanks a lot Udo _______________________________________________________________________ 1.000.000 DM gewinnen - kostenlos tippen - http://millionenklick.web.de Ih...@we..., 8MB Speicher, Verschluesselung - http://freemail.web.de |

Hi All. Just a note to congratulate Michael on lcd4linux, I like it a lot as i = just downloaded it and it compiled and worked with my 40x2 display = straight away. There are however a few changes I think would make it even better: * Multiple screens with a delay set in the config file so that say = every 20 seconds a new display will come up with different information. * Scrolling support, e.g. if text is too long to fit on the first = line, make it scroll accross. Not sure if these can be done as I am not a programmer, but they would = be really useful for me. Andrew Thrift an...@co... [Simon Wood] You have a goto at the start of each line anyhow. I need to get my head around what goes on the flush, but it looks like it makes some attempt to not write to a line that hasn't change. The largest display you can have with a single HD44780 is 2x40, above that you need to have 2 HD's and therefore either 2 strobes or some extra addressing logic. Good info page at: http://www.delta-components.de/suchbaum/LCDappNotes/iii.htm > There is a big advantage, too: if for some reason (overload, cable > disconnect, ...) one or more characters get lost, the will be redrawn > the next time. [Simon Wood] To cope with cable disconnection you would have to handle re-initialisation, and that would be really messy/tricky. Its seems to grab a fair amount of processor time (up 5% odd on my work machine), I'll see how my (really) crappy machine at home copes. > > I'd like to adopt a LCD project for a MP3 player I'm putting together (I've seen LCD Proc but the screen update is too slow), what do you guys think about adjusting the code to read form a keypad??? > > I'm not shure about this. lcd4linux is designed following the KISS > approach (keep it small and simple), and I think it should stay this > way. [Simon Wood] I agree with the KISS pricinple, I'll keep looking around but the speed of your screen update is appealing....... > Thanks a lot, but this has been fixed in the CVS some time ago. [Simon Wood] OK found that, but it looks like it will only work for the 4x20, and not the 4x16. The change is obvious..... Not so obvious is how to handle the 1x16 which has an address change mid line. I guess that no one is using this or they would have complained already..... [Simon Wood] I've looked at more detail at the config file and I note that the length of the tokens (when not printed out in bar form) is not configurable. In fact different types seem to output different amounts of right justified values. It may be nice to clarify this is the documentation. Happy hacking, Simon W. |

How does implementing a 'dirty' flag (or something), or would this interfere with your clever use of the user defined characters for the bar graphs... you should tell your mailer to wrap long lines :-) yes, you're right, we're flushing the whole display. As far as I know, there have been no problems with this by now. The largest display I've seen so far is 20x4, which makes 80 characters. If we'd implement a dirty detection, we'd have to send a lot of positioning codes, a few bytes each. I don't think this would save us a lot of bandwith. There is a big advantage, too: if for some reason (overload, cable disconnect, ...) one or more characters get lost, the will be redrawn the next time. The X11-driver does update modified areas only, and so will do a driver for graphics displays (maybe there will be one in the future, and it will support color, too.) > Is there an archive of the mailing list somewhere? Yes, there is. look at SourceForge. But it's a very low-traffic list, so the archives are quite small... > I'd like to adopt a LCD project for a MP3 player I'm putting together (I've seen LCD Proc but the screen update is too slow), what do you guys think about adjusting the code to read form a keypad??? I'm not shure about this. lcd4linux is designed following the KISS approach (keep it small and simple), and I think it should stay this way. the serial driver is designed as a output-only device. which makes the code much simpler. If we would parse a keypad - what should we do with the input? How code it in the config file? A lot of questions.... Maybe lcdproc would better fit your needs in this case. I don't want to be a replacement for lcdproc, but an alternative. > Finally, never go to a party empty handed. > Here's a fix for HD44780.c (from 0.97) to get it displaying correctly on 20x4 (tested) and 16x4 (not tested): Thanks a lot, but this has been fixed in the CVS some time ago. bye, Michael -- netWorks Vox: +43 316 692396 Michael Reinelt Fax: +43 316 692343 Geisslergasse 4 GSM: +43 676 3079941 A-8045 Graz, Austria e-mail: re...@eu... |

Hello all, I've just been having a play with Lcd4Linux and have some comments.... Am I correct (from a very quick scan of the code) that the system relies on 'Flushing' the whole display for each frame, rather than only updating the areas of the screen that actually need updating??? How does implementing a 'dirty' flag (or something), or would this interfere with your clever use of the user defined characters for the bar graphs... Is there an archive of the mailing list somewhere? I'd like to adopt a LCD project for a MP3 player I'm putting together (I've seen LCD Proc but the screen update is too slow), what do you guys think about adjusting the code to read form a keypad??? Finally, never go to a party empty handed. Here's a fix for HD44780.c (from 0.97) to get it displaying correctly on 20x4 (tested) and 16x4 (not tested): ---- code ------ void HD_goto (int row, int col) { int pos; pos=(row%2)*64+col; /* Cope with 16 or 20 cols */ if (row>1) pos+= Lcd.cols; HD_command (0x80|pos, 40); } ---- end code ----- cheers, Simon Wood Hardware Engineer Pace Micro Technology plc Victoria Road, Saltaire, Shipley West Yorkshire, BD18 3LF Tel : +44(0)1274 532000 Fax: +44(0)1274 532029 This E-Mail and any attachments hereto are strictly confidential and intended solely for the addressee. The good news: There will be a way to do this in the future. lcd4linux is currently in a phase of major redesign. Part of this redesign is a new feature called 'plugin', which allows you to call a user-space program, and it's output will be displayed. This plugin could be a simpel shell (or perl or whatever) script, which counts the number of leases. The bad news: redesign takes its time.... bye, Michael -- netWorks Vox: +43 316 692396 Michael Reinelt Fax: +43 316 692343 Geisslergasse 4 GSM: +43 676 3079941 A-8045 Graz, Austria e-mail: re...@eu... |

Hi there, I'm very sorry, but it seems that none of the documentation files have made their way into the tarball. It's my first time with autoconf, automake and friends, and I didn't really check the distribution. If you need the documentation, you can either - use the CVS - wait a few days until 0.97 is released (I'm waiting for another success report with the HD44780 driver), where the problem is fixed, and all README's are in the tarball. sorry again, Michael -- netWorks Vox: +43 316 692396 Michael Reinelt Fax: +43 316 692343 Geisslergasse 4 GSM: +43 676 3079941 A-8045 Graz, Austria e-mail: re...@eu... |

Hi there, I just released lcd4linux-0.96 We hopefully got the annoying bugs in the X11 driver fixed. There's a new command line option '-c key=value', so you can overwrite entries from the config-file (Great for testing!) the gap size can be specified as '-1', which means that lcd4linux should use the size of a pixel as the gap size. If you increase the pixel size (probably with the use of '-c pixel=5+1'), the gap size will increase automagically. But the coolest enhancement is the integration into KDE! I created a sample configuration, lcd4linux can now 'swallow' on the K Panel. Try this! Have a look at README.KDE Now for something different: I would like to have some feedback. If you use lcd4linux, and you are subscribed on this list (otherwise you'd probably miss this message :-), please let me know what you think of it, what features you would like to see in the future, which colors you like most, or anything else. I would like to support other displays. But I have none :-( Therefore I'd need your help! Especially all this parallel-port displays are widely used, I think. Another manufacturer is CrystalFonts, they got this cool penguin on there display. If you have such a display, and want to run lcd4linux with it, please let me know. Believe me - it's very simple to write a new driver, and I will help you as much as I can! bye, Michael -- netWorks Vox: +43 316 692396 Michael Reinelt Fax: +43 316 692343 Geisslergasse 4 GSM: +43 676 3079941 A-8045 Graz, Austria e-mail: re...@eu... |
