[1.x] Auto-Type Does Not Work On 98SE
A lightweight and easy-to-use password manager
Brought to you by:
dreichl
Auto-Type does not appear to work on Windows 98SE
using version 1.04 of KeePass. It worked fine using
version 1.03. I have tried it on two Windows 98SE PCs,
and they both have the same problem. The problem
occurs with both http and https web sites. I tried
uninstalling KeePass, then reinstalling. I tried it
both with and without Secure Edit Controls. I use the
default auto-type sequence.

I am the author of the bug submission. I am sorry I did not
initially identify myself, but I am new to SourceForge and
not familiar with the interface. If anyone has ideas for a
resolution on 98SE, I am available to test it.

Have you tested it using an empty Notepad file?
Open Notepad, highlight an entry in KP and Auto-Type. You
should see your username and password typed.

I tried the suggestion that pail459 made, but nothing went
into the Notepad window. Please note that "Copy User Name to
Clipboard (Ctrl+B)" and "Copy Password to Clipboard
(Ctrl+C)" do work.
I also tried running KeePass under the control of a program
called Dependency Walker. I am doubtful if it will help, but
here are the lines that were marked in red or were listed as
access violations:

"IsTNT") called from "c:\windows\system\OLEAUT32.DLL" at

Bug:Automatically lock doesn't work when the "Edit Entry"
window is open.
I can still close it ,or edit other Entries, though the
icon shows that the software is locked. So it is not very
safe.
I have also mailed you with a suggestion:
It is not convenient to edit the notes field, so, would
you please creat some
shortcut icons to input words, for example: I can press
the first icon,it automatically
typed "Auto-Type:" in the notes field ; And I press the
second icon, it shows the "Auto-Type-Window:";and
also "{USERNAME}""{TAB}"and so on.
then it will be much easier for the users to edit the
notes for auto login.
And I thought out another suggestion just now:
You have to enter password of Keepass, if you want to see
the true password under the "****" code in an Entry.
That means when you press the button"***" up on
the "Gen"button in the Entry to show the password that we
can read, it comes out the window we should "cin"
password of keepass before we can see the true password
under "****".
I think this makes your password much safer.
would you please connect me when you see this message?
I sent you a mail in your dominik.reichl@t-online.de box.
I comes from Shanghai ,China. and the mail address is

you can check your mail box.
may be I have more suggestions. thank you !

Same problem exists with Windows 98 1st edition.
No problems with 1.03.

The same problem also exixts on Win ME.

Yes, there is a problem with KeePass v1.04 in win98SE.
Neither hot key (global or Cntrl+V) for Autotype works
in any open window, eg, PGP, Notepad, etc..
The only solution I can discover is to download
KeePass v1.03; it has full autotype functionality
in Win98SE.
KeePass is a GREAT prg! I hope the author can
find the bug in v1.04 and correct it in the next release.

Actually in win98SE, Autotype functionality in KP v 1.03 is limited to
highlighting an entry in KP and punching Cntrl+V.
Neither the default Cntrl+Alt+A -or any other Global autotype global hotkey
combination will activate the global autotype function. Global autotype
is defunct in v1.03 in win98SE and apparently in win98 first ed and ME too.
As reported here earlier by others, no autotype function
works at all in KP v1.04 in any version of win98 or ME.

Seems to be the same problem with v 1.05: neither
Cntrl+Alt+A nor Cntrl+V appear to work with W98SE.
I started using KeePass on W98SE a couple of weeks ago, and
have now transferred all my many logons & passwords to it.
Discovering the problem with 1.04 (and this bug report), I
implemented v 1.03, and Cntrl+Alt+A and Cntrl+V are both
working fine for me.
I was very much hoping that this problem would be fixed in
1.05; it's a great pity that it appears not to have been,
since KeePass is a great product, and is *exactly* what I
need - and I'm intending to stay on W98SE until Vista comes
along (and probably until SP 1 is released), which is going
to be some considerable time yet.

KeePass 1.07 will support auto-type on Windows 9x systems.

The comment by Dominik Reichl on 2007-04-11 is good news. KeePass is attractive because it can be put on a portable drive, such as a thumb drive, and used on Windows systems from 9x through Vista.
