If I try to open a keepass database with a master key that's over a year old,
a window will popup forcing me to change the password. I don't want to change the password because it is a backup copy. So I click cancel and this prompt closes and reappears. I click X to close the prompt but the same thing happens, preventing me from accessing my passwords.

Someone has set one or more of the "Force changing the master key..." database settings. Since the setting is a forced change, you must change the Master Key to access the database. Once you have changed the Master Key, you will be able to disable the forced setting, and set the Master Key back to the original Master Key. Remember to save the database after changing the Master Key back to the original key. I suggest you perform the above procedure on a copy of the backup and replace the backup only after you have confirmed that you can close then reopen the copy of the backup.

To disable the forced setting, select File>Database Settings...>Advanced(tab)while the database is open and uncheck the problem settings in the Master Key section.

You can change the Master Key to the current Master Key (it doesn't have to be different). However, remember to change the force setting, save the changes and verify that you can open the database after closing it.
