[Jython-dev] package resolution for jython package and Java package

Hi,

I have a jython package name starting with the same package as my
java package. e.g.,

foo/bar/test.py in Jython

and

foo/jython/rocks/RockTheWorld.class in Java

Let's say I want to use RockTheWorld which is a Java class.
Normally, we use

from foo.jython.rocks import *

However, since the jython package has precendence over the Java
classpath, Jython says it couldn't find "jython" package.  The
reason is because both package path starts with foo.

Here is my question: Why didn't Jython backtrack to try the rest
of the path to find foo.jython.rocks package?  Is this a bug?

Yes, it does make sense. I will move the class.

I think that's the important point, when people will start using
nested scopes a lot, we will remove the eventual bugs (I hope they are
not so many <wink>). OTOH the nested scopes test suite can be compiled and 
passes.

A note: jythonc continues (as before) to do partial evolution
considering just compilation order (and not the possible evaluation orders),
in the few cases where the outcome is important (base classes of a class def
etc.) this is not a problem because the former matches the normal order,
on the other hand before the patches jythonc produced errors when an undefined
value was used, this is no longer true: the proper solution (given the we
have also nested scopes) would be to add another pass to jythonc ...
but I did not feel it was worth the effort.

First of all cool product. I like the concept alot.

We are looking at creating a rules engine based
on Jython embedded in java.  I played with the PythonInterpreter example
code and got it to work but it may be too slow if you have to do=20
this each time.  What I would like to know how to do is the following:

        interpreter.precompile(JythonCode);

I don't see how to do the "precompile" stage. I tried using the eval =
funtion but
it kept throwing an exception. =20

Do you have or can point me to an example which uses the eval correctly =
or
does the above it would be greatly appreciated.

It also passes whatever tests I have. 

My single comment is concerning the CompilerFlags class which I feel
should now be placed in the org.python.core package. That way it will be
included in jar file when compiling with the --core option. I found that
to be necessary for the 1.3 appletviewer.

Looks good. Obviously my tests are woefully short of any use of nested
scopes, but there was no negative sideeffect with the jythonc patches.

I'm very impressed with the changes to jythonc. Despite the added
complexity of nested scopes, I feel that the result have become easier
to understand.

Feel free to commit these two patches and close the bug reports at your
convenience.

There's an excellent O'Reilly book on it; the java.sun.com JDK documentation
is pretty simple; and I think Sun's JDK comes with some examples.

Mind you, that's in Java, not in Jython ;).  I've found it to be a very
simple transition, tho; see http://family.caltech.edu/, and follow the
links to SourceForge CVS to see that code.  I'd be happy to give you some
pointers on where in there to look, once you have it.

I've been using jython to build applications.

Now I want to build an applet.  I've started with the demo's but I just
can't seem to get it up :)

I'm using jython 2.0 and jdk 1.1.8 on W2000

I was using jdk1.3 for applications, but I think I've got everything
pointing to 1.1.8 now.  I would really appreciate a clue or two, I'm
starting to go in an infinite loop.

the "aaa.py" file is just the LabelDemo renamed (yes I changed the class
name in the file) see below

Hi,

How can I  import into jython compiled extension module, in my case
casic.dll (or casic.pyd) ? I use Windows NT and build that module with SWIG.
I have this file in my working directory where I run jython from.
When I try to import it, I got:

[Jython-dev] Lost SyntaxErrors (sometimes) in Jython 2.1 Alpha 1

Hi,

I've been seeing a problem with Jython 2.1 alpha 1, where sometimes
SyntaxError exceptions are being lost. All we see at application startup
is an ImportError for a top level module. This is making it extremely
difficult to do development.

I don't have a test case for this, but I can probably come up with one
if you need it.

However, by running jdb I found the spot where these are being lost. 
In PyModule.java, there is a method called "impHook", which has the
following lines.

                                     Py.newString("__doc__"),});
        }
        try {
            return __builtin__.__import__(name, null, null, silly_list);

The SyntaxError gets caught here, and is never seen again. :-)

Is there a fix/workaround for this?

Sorry to be late in reacting, but exactly this happened to me
when Java's classes.zip is not on the classpath.
Fix by putting classes.zip on the class path when invoking java.

[Jython-dev] Freezing modules.

Can someone give me an idea of how to freeze modules, please?
The jythonc docs are mum on this subject ;).

I have a project that I'd like to distribute as a .jar file, and
I cannot do 'import' commands when I bundle it up as a .jar, even
if the .class files are present.  Not sure what to do about it...

...but compilation doesn't work, because I don't follow the Java rules
for class/file sequestering.

What JDK are you using? Are you using 'jython.bat' to start the
interpreter? If so, look and see what 'java.exe' it is looking for. Then
in the corresponding '\lib' directory, I have 'rt.jar' that has
'java/lang/Thread' in it.

If you are on Linux, you can use a similar method to determine the
problem.

You have access to the complete source for everything, so tracking down
problems is usually straightforward (if not easy ;^) ...)

Optional nested scopes support (as python 2.1b1)

LocalsCompiler becomes obsolete.
Adds few new files.

from __future__ import nested_scopes
does not setup nested scope for the entire session
from an interactive prompt: but the necessary
hooks are already there ...

It passes test_scope from python 2.1b1

and a typical subset of python 2.1b1 regression
tests and the jython regrtest suite
(even with nested scopes logic forced on).

with python].

[Jython-dev] New Jython project.

Hi all,

you can add a bioinformatics project to the list of Jython applications...
An alpha version of my FamilyRelations viewer for comparative sequence
analysis of genomic data is soon to be released under GPL.

The project site (what there is of it) is at

	http://family.caltech.edu/

and the project code is under CVS at 'http://familyjewels.sourceforge.net',
along with the backend analysis code.

FamilyRelations has been in use here at Caltech for several months, and
it's finally approaching a really usable state.  Of course, you have no need
to use it unless you're looking at kb of homologous genomic regions -- it's
a rather specialized application ;).

The main program is 'ds-chooser.py' if you want to try running it.

The codebase is approximately 9000 lines, ~4000 lines of Jython code and
the rest in comments & whitespace.  I hope to release an alpha version within
a month or so.

Jython has helped me enormously by providing a Java-based framework for
rapid application development.  FamilyRelations is being developed and
run on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X -- it uses Swing, so it won't run on
Mac OS 9 or below -- and I believe that the ease of installation will play
a huge role in its adoption.

N.B.  It runs under Jython 2.0.  I haven't tested it under 2.1 yet.
