Yes, it's a bug.
Don't how complex is to fix, in any case is from a part of JPython
that we haven't touched and which is quite fragile.

Please submit a bug report to SF, if you haven't do so yet.

[Jython-dev] patch for loading .py files from the classpath

I've often wanted to be able to distribute jython + standard modules in
a single jar. In order to do this, you need to be able to load .py files
from the classpath.

After poking through the jython code, I found that this patch to
org/jython/core/imp.java in jython-2.1a3 does the trick:

Now if you add all the modules into jython.jar and monkey with the
manifest (I have an ant build file that does this), you can type java
-jar jython.jar and you will get the interpreter and be able to import
all the standard modules. No need for any installation, environment
variables, registry, or anything. You do end up with multiple cachedirs
if you invoke the jar from different directories but in many cases I
would not expect this to be an issue.

Hopefully one of you will be able to determine if the patch will have
some bad side effects. Note that entries in python.path should override
entries in the classpath.

Does anyone else think this would be a good thing to add to jython? It
makes it easier to bundle jython with Ant, put it into source code
control repositories, and easier to install when you don't need the
registry.

We'll definitely have to look at other security implications that come up as
a result of using Java/Jython.

I believe that Zope restricts which modules may be imported by
through-the-web code. If that's the case, we can restrict access to the
Jython Java classes so that people can't circumvent the Jython-level
security used by Zope.

a web browser. Any method or variable that is not meant to be accessed by
someone doing through the web development starts with an "_". So, they use
co_names in a number of places to look for variable/method references that
begin with "_".

[Jython-dev] Jython reflection difference from Win2000 to Solaris 5.8

Hi,

	I'm trying to execute a Junit framework test using java reflection for
test
method invocation. I see an error when running the following test a
Solaris 5.8 platform,
with JDK 1.3.1, jython 2.1.a1, and junit 3.7. The test runs successfully
on a Windows 2000
platform with the same versions of JDK, jython, and junit.
	I'm curious why I'm seeing a difference.

how is that used/necessary) you should start looking at 
org.python.compiler.CodeCompiler,...
and the functions to construct code in org.python.core.Py

It's just boring, and you should roughly get how the compiler works
but it is not difficult.

To be honest jython does support co_names because it is not necessary,
in CPython co_names contains complementary info needed by the bytecode.

Even inspect.py does not use it. In any case if the use of co_names is
related to security adding it to jython is not that useful, because
potentially forged java bytecode could be delivered together with an
irrelevant co_names.

[Jython-dev] co_names

    We'd like to try to get co_names going in PyTableCode for phabric. This
is used extensively in Zope, largely to filter out functions and variables
that begin with "_". We've got some other work we're doing in which Zope
Page Templates would be useful. We've got those working already, except for
python expressions, which use co_names.

    What are the difficulties in doing this? Where should we begin? All of
my work so far has been in the org.python.core set of classes and I haven't
taken any look at how the parser works and how we would get at that list of
names...

The following lines added just at the beginning of 
method importFromAs in org/python/core/imp.java (from 
the 2.0 codebase) would make the import of single java 
classes a bit more tolerant, especially if the package 
manager encounters a 'bad' .jar File:

I am shipping the standard modules as part of my application jar.  I list

"/fully qualified pathname to my jar!Lib" to the sys.path of the interpreter.

If you already have a Jython app installed, you can create a frozen
distribution & send it all out in a .jar file; that's relatively easy,
in fact: the command

	jythonc --all -j out.jar startProgram.py

should bundle up everything into 'out.jar'.

[Jython-dev] Netbeans and Jython?

I recently met Tim Boudreau, product manager for NetBeans. Tim encouraged me
to consider writing extensions to NetBeans to better support Jython
scripting. NetBeans is the open-source project that powers Sun's Forte IDE.
NetBeans is to Forte what Mozilla is to Netscape Communicator.

I'm wondering if this makes sense to the Jython community?

The resulting project would let you use NetBeans as an IDE for Jython
scripting. In the NetBeans environment you would have a simple text editor
that would handle Jython's spacing and a link from the debugger back to the
editor to show you which line caused an error.

What do you think?

Makes sense, but personally (don't know about Finn) I will not
spend a second trying to implement that. First because of the
java.io non java.io resulting confusion. From a general
perspective os.chdir is a lot shell task oriented, I personally
think if one is writing a shell task program, she's better
served by CPython anyway.

OTOH sound patches are always welcome.

It is correct that Java seems to have no notion of a current directory 
besides the directory in which the jvm was started. This means that a 
perfect solution is not possible. However, a solution which would make 
normal (no java.io.... calls) python scripts work correctly is possible. 
Jython should maintain it own notion of current directory, file names 
should be changed to absolute before calling java.

Jacl (Tcl java) has solved the problem in this way, a find-grep in their 
sources showed only a handfull of places in which they referred to 
current directory.
