If disk size is a concern, a property could be set to
only save the last n versions.  

Another idea I had was that this could take place
during idle time.  If no keyboard input was
intercepted in a certain number of seconds, it would
save the file and create the diff.  I think this could
also be done as a plugin.  That way we could test the
feature, and if it meets with the approval of the
jEdit community, it could then be moved inside the editor.
