I think it would be more useful (and probably easier to implement) if this
were done for an open-source project (OpenOffice, AbiSuite, whatever). But
of course that's not your decision...

The main problem with this is that you need a lot of disk space to
remember ALL of the file versions you ever had. But, if you are more
concerned with getting work done than with disk usage and remembering to
press Save now and then, it's probably a good feature to have.
