I vote for leaving the buttons as they are - I generally develop muscle memory of sorts in clicking buttons, and would find having them move around in a new version of jEdit surprising. It could be L&F based -- anyone using the native L&F would have platform button order, while all the cross-platform L&F's would use Java button order.
