I think this has been a frequent request--I may have referred to it in a
previous email to this list as "drop anchor."  Or not.  But I know it has
been requested.  Or perhaps more in the form of "set a mark, and start
treating the cursor keys (arrows, page down, etc.) as selecting keys until
told otherwise."  (Same as above, but without having to issue a final
command to select everything in between the mark and the cursor's current
position.)  Sort of a toggle on selecting.

Several older editors implemented this, e.g. Brief.
