I tried to get maven to work from within jEdit last summer, and didn't have great results. I couldn't get the maven plugin to work, and it doesn't seem to be maintained any more. I did have success running maven from the Console plugin, but it was significantly slower than running maven from the command line. My Eclipse-using coworkers have had similar results, so just about everyone at my office runs maven from the command line. As a side note, the XML plugin works well with maven .pom files.
