I just tried running straight from my Xmanager instead of from an established terminal session. Now I can edit. The wierd window manager behavior is still there (windows being "stolen" from other X applications) but jedit is now useable in Linux. Thanks to Alan and Eric for their help. But the windows appear normally. Must be something weird with my X. ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Tribley" <bi...@tr...> To: jed...@li... Good news: jedit now works. However, it has an interesting side effect: if other X applications (nedit or xclock or both) are running, when jedit starts it "steals" the window manager from the other applications! jedit works normally, but the other windows cannot be moved or resized or cycled through. After quitting jedit the other X applications get their window back. Fortunately I normally only run an editor as an X application, so this is not really a big deal. I am still on RedHat 9, so it is possible that strangeness in that version of XFree86 is the root cause. I am planning to upgrade to CentOS 5 very soon. Anyway, thanks to your suggestion I am up and running on Linux. Best regards, Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Ezust" <ala...@gm...> To: "William Tribley" <bi...@tr...> Cc: jed...@li... I've never run jEdit the way you describe, but perhaps this will help: http://community.jedit.org/?q=node/view/4069 On Fri, Feb 5, 2010 at 10:31 AM, William Tribley < bi...@tr... > wrote: I have just installed jedit on Windoze, no problem, it works well. I then executed the installer jar on my Linux server as root because I got tired of changing permissions on edited executable files all the time. I answered the installer questions, there were no installation errors. Problem: jedit starts on Linux with no window manager! This gives the really strange effect of running windowed programs that cannot be moved or resized. I have to kill the processes to make them go away, the session is unuseable because the help "window" covers over the main window, neither can be moved. No title bar, window pane or resize controls are there. I do not log into my server using an X session, but over a ssh session with X tunneled. I have an Xmanager running on my Windoze machine. I can start xclock, nedit just fine from this terminal without invoking any windows manager, they appear in a Windows-style windows manager (i.e. title bar and standard buttons look like other windows programs). I must be missing something very basic here. Any help appreciated.
