During the last year, and more and more frequently, I've been receiving 2 and sometimes 3 copies of list messages as people use "reply all" indiscriminately. In my own correspondence I take time to ensure that a reply goes to the list (rendering it searchable in the archives), and only to the list. I consider this basic mailing list etiquette. To do otherwise would be lazy and inconsiderate. The sender is essentially saying to the recipient(s), "my time is more important than yours". Like any other spam, duplicate messages clog my inbox and require extra time and effort on my part. One might argue that the time required to remove a duplicate message is small, but I would respond that the time it takes to ensure that the message is properly addressed in the first place is equally small. If I remain silent then I tacitly condone the practice. If this practice becomes accepted, though, the effect is cumulative for the recipient, resulting in increasing amounts of wasted time. > While I have received such posts many times on jedit-devel and > jedit-users, the mail is not duplicated. Do you have any idea why the trick > doesn't for you but works for me? No, I'm not familiar with the particulars of the mailer on SourceForge. I suspect that although this could work for messages sent to both the users and devel lists (though it appears not to work for me at least), this solution would not work for messages addressed to a personal email address as they wouldn't go through SourceForge, but would be routed directly.
