You are probably not using Ubuntu Hardy (the development branch) then.

I've only created an "official" package recently for Hardy (to be
released in this month), so there's none in Gutsy.

The one you're seeing in Synaptic (4.2final) is probably the one from
the jedit.org repository. You can manually install the .deb for pre13
from http://jedit.org/index.php?page=download though.
