Category: editor core Group: normal bug Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Kevin Hunter (hunteke) >Assigned to: daniel hahler (blueyed) Summary: jedit slow when pasting / using home/end keys Initial Comment: Editing a 73KB text file (txt, no syntax highlighting) with no wrapping, it takes a noticeable half second or so to move to the head or tail of a line (in my case, when I hit home/end). My first guess is that the time is spent somewhere in the pipeline to redraw the buffer-screen because when soft-wrap is on, I don't notice this problem. Only when I hit end on a line that extends beyond the right boundary of the visible buffer. The same symptom seems to occur if the buffer needs to scroll to accommodate a cut/paste operation. I can recreate this at jEdit r8692 (4.3pre9 release) and on r8796. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Kevin Hunter (hunteke) Date: 2007-05-02 08:25 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1271235 Originator: YES Sorry, I've been extremely busy. I've just svn up'd to 9485. I'm still getting the slow down. In fact, it seems even worse than before. . . . Thinks for a minute . . . Finally! Steps to reproduce! The problem occurs when *starting* jEdit with *multiple* views. (Removing plugins doesn't seem to matter.) 1. Start with fresh installation. (mv ~/.jedit ~/.jedit.<date>.backup) 2. Start jEdit. 3. Open a larger-than visible buffer size file. 4. Scroll, noting that it scrolls fairly rapidly. 5. Create a new view and scroll in that, noting that it also scrolls fairly rapidly. 6. File->Exit. (As opposed to closing each window individually, e.g. as with the the 'X' button. The point is to have both views automatically open next time.) 7. Give jEdit a few seconds to close. For good measure, I quit all my other Java programs as well. Not sure if that matters. 8. Re-open jEdit and scroll. This is where I notice the problem as it takes rather a long time. Perhaps this is a more useful bug report. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: daniel hahler (blueyed) Date: 2007-04-18 00:00 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=663176 Originator: NO The previously mentioned patch has been applied to SVN, so you might want to re-try using SVN trunk. This is not directly graphic cards related however. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: daniel hahler (blueyed) Date: 2007-03-12 17:23 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=663176 Originator: NO Please try this patch: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1678608&group_id=588&atid=300588 This prevents waste of resources while scanning for matching brackets when it's not necessary and might therefor be related. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Kevin Hunter (hunteke) Date: 2007-01-30 08:54 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1271235 Originator: YES I just enabled my video card. It seems to have alleviated the problem. I have been messing with my X settings recently for my Graphics class, but I'm not sure what all I changed. I do know that I only started using my video card in Linux this month, and this hasn't been a problem before. Does Java or jEdit cache knowledge of a video card? (I turn it on as I need it, and off again to save power and fan-noise.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Kevin Hunter (hunteke) Date: 2007-01-30 06:44 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1271235 Originator: YES Probably should have added my system details: Pentium M @ 1.5Ghz 512MB RAM Ubuntu Edgy Sun Java 1.6.0-rc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100588&aid=1647652&group_id=588 |
