I've used 4.2final for months, and didn't have this problem until
immediately after installing 4.3pre1.

I'm not contradicting you or doubting you or anything - just giving data
that hopefully might help determine exactly what's wrong.  For example,
perhaps it's a typically latent bug, and upgrading gives it a chance to
become active.

I had a similar problem with buffertabs and jedit version 4.2, so I
suspect this is a bug in buffertabs, and not anything to do with 4.3
