Sometimes this bites me, but 90% of the time it's supporting a feature I really love, which is path completion in the filename field. e.g., I can just start typing a path in the filename field... /Users/mchaput/Documents/... ...and the dialog box view keeps up with your typing. This is *much* better than just typing a path blind because you're getting tons of visual feedback that the path you're typing is accurate. Anyway, since to your fingers you're typing a path, you need to backspace sometimes if you make a mistake. That includes backspacing past a slash into the previous directory. I do sympathize with you because when you're NOT using this feature, backspacing to the beginning of the field suddenly becomes VERY annoying. I think a fix could be to change the "path typing" feature so it doesn't clear the path as you change directories by typing slashes. This might have "interesting" UI consistency problems, though... I haven't really thought it through.
