It now loads UTF-16 fine. Thanks. I did find a problem in that pre6 seems to have lost the two byte UTF16 BOM word. Saving the buffer as UTF16 in pre7 either didn't fix it or screwed the whole buffer depending on how I did it. (changing to UTF8 and then to UTF16 was bad.) Loading and saving in XML-Spy restored the BOM and allowed jEdit to identify the encoding correctly, but with the BOM gone jEdit was lost.
