[ jEdit-users ] problem with German Umlauts

hi
I have java 1.4.2 and jedit 4.2pre4 on Suse Linux 8.2

but I can not type Umlauts like "ä" no matter what encoding I chose.
I tried Unicode, UTF8 and all ISO*

any ideas what could be wrong here ??

maybe there is something in the mailing list archiv but they are unreachable 
at the moment.
