I already use jEdit to teach with. I teach Perl, HTML, and Java. I actually insist that my students learn to compile and run on the command line. The generation that I'm now teaching seems to have grown up in a Windows world and don't know anything about the command line in Windows or unix. I think that it is part of my job to introduce them to the cli and make them get comfortable with it. IDEs have a place in the professional work environment but I think students should learn the command line. My committee of employers is very clear, they want me to teach fundamentals, not tools. Even in my advanced class where we learn cvs and ant they have to use the cli. I actually like that the console won't accept input as then my students are forced to abandon the GUI and open a command window. If you put it in I hope they don't find it. -Eric On Thursday, May 15, 2003, at 08:44 PM, Todd O'Bryan wrote: > Slava, > > What are the nasty issues in allowing System.in input at the Console? > Is it something tricky, or just something you haven't gotten around > to? > > This is something I could put some time into, as I'll also be using > jEdit to teach programming in a Windows environment next year. > > Todd > > On Thursday, May 15, 2003, at 09:05 PM, Slava Pestov wrote: > >> On Thu, May 15, 2003 at 06:40:17PM -0600, Jabel D.
