Wendy, just curious have you tried using the "Buffer List" plugin and then dock the buffer list to the right? (I like on the left with the file system browser, but that's just me:). I used to think I couldn't live without buffer tabs because I got so used to using them from other apps on the top or bottom, but now I just toggle between the buffer list and file system browser. If you are just docking to the right the buffer list I think would be perfect for you. It would basically show you the list of all your files in a downward list and left aligned and you could control the width of the menu. Have you tried using it? Let me now how you like it.
