3 things: One: My previous comment about adding the file extension may not be valid because I just checked and it seems to make no diff. Two: Check that your jedit version and plugins are all current because on my system those checkbox you mentioned "are" enabled. Three: Make sure the "Validate if DTD or Schema available" check box, in XML: General, is set. This is what I think is letting me validate with arbitrary other file extensions.
