Hello Dr. Phil, I’ve had similar issues on my Mac in the past where the jEdit application stub is unable to find the JRE or uses the wrong one. I was able to fix the problem by replacing the application stub with the “Universal Java application stub” found here: https://github.com/tofi86/universalJavaApplicationStub <https://github.com/tofi86/universalJavaApplicationStub> It’s just a shell script rather than compiled code, so it’s easy to view and modify with a text editor (like jEdit, for example) if you’re familiar with BASH scripts. It also respects the JAVA_HOME variable, so it’s easy to run jEdit with the JRE of your choice. The info on that web site does a good job of explaining how it works. To set it up: - in the Mac Finder, navigate to the jEdit application (probably in your /Applications directory) - right-click and choose “Show Package Contents” - enter the “Contents” folder and then the “MacOS” folder - rename the existing “jedit” stub to something else (eg. “jedit.save”) in case you want to change back - save a copy of the “Universal Java application stub” into this folder and rename it to “jedit” The next time you try to start jEdit it will use the new stub. Good luck, Steve Jakob > On Dec 26, 2020, at 4:40 AM, Evans, Philip A. I think you have to go into its .app package and tell it use the JDK you want. Applications launched from "Applications" don't see the shell environment as far as I remember. Hi everyone If I install jedit from the downloadable mac dmg file (which is prefereable to the universal installer for many reasons) it seems to insist on pocking up the oracle Java that shipped with MacOS, instead of the newer java I’ve installed from MacPorts. I have disabled the system java, set JAVA_HOME etc. Other Java apps seem to be picking up openjdk15 fine, but not jedit. If I use jedit 5.6.0 then it complains that it won’t work at all, and jedit 5.5.0 complains because I have a plug in that requires java>1.8 Does anyone know how to force jedit to use a specific installation of java? i have the same problem, and I think it's a Windows problem I have not found anything searching for 'windows 10 visible app does not have focus' I'm looking at jEdit, but if I hit Alt+F4 to close the current app, Windows brings up the Shutdown dialog On 12/4/2020 3:14 PM, Cranston, Sarah via jEdit-users wrote: > > Something that has bugged me for years – When I am in Windows Explorer > and double-click to open something in jEdit, often (but not always) > jEdit does not receive focus even though it comes to the forefront. > This means that if I decide that’s the wrong file and hit Ctrl+W, I > don’t close the file, I close Windows Explorer. > > Anybody else have this problem? In the search and replace window, there is an option “keep dialog” - it’s the top option under “settings”. Is this selected? It should be to keep the window open - possibly you’ve accidentally unset it (I have done this in the past). Hi, I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 using jEdit 5.5.0 If I search through a file (current buffer) the "Search And Replace" window closes immediately after the first occurrence of the search-term is found. Do I need to change some settings (I'm using jEdit for years and I'm not aware I have changed something recently)? Is it a bug? Any hint appreciated. Thanks, Harm |

Dear list members, I installed the latest jEdit on Windows 10. When trying to start jedit.exe from the desktop shortcut created by the installer, I get an error message saying that a JRE 11 or greater is required. This is strange, because I do have OpenJDK on my system, and the path environment variable contains the bin folder bin forder of the JRE. I did use exactly that version of the OpenJDK pointed at by the web page opening immediately after receiving the error message. Of course I can start the program by a command like "java -jar jedit.jar", but I do wonder how to start the exe. Thank you so much in advance for any help on this, with kind regards, Bernhard Stoeger from Austria |

For those of you who use the ctags sidekick with exuberant ctags, you should know there is a fork of the project, universal ctags, with more languages supported. it works as a drop-in replacement for ctags. https://github.com/universal-ctags That is your tip of the day :-) |

Hi, is it possible to get a "Daily Build", for example jEdit 5.6pre1? - If I click the link for this, http://jedit.org/index.php?page=download, it shows an empty directory. Kind regards, Axel |

Hi jEdit developers, I hope you are doing well. I am Jialun. I met a problem on the first time using jEdit on my macOS 10.15.3. Following the instruction, I tried to open it by Ctrl+click the application and selecting "Open", but a window popped out said "JRELoadError". Could you help me solve it? Sincerely, Jialun Yang |

jEdit users - I use jEdit at work where (from looking at my Chrome install) we connect to the internet using an automatic proxy script. This proxy is set by an automatic proxy configuration url (PAC). I am not sure how to setup this automatic proxy configuration in jEdit. I know there is a "Proxy Servers" settings tab in "Global Options". But there is no place where I can put the automatic proxy configuration url. The downside of this is that I can't install or upgrade jEdit or jEdit Plugins through the Plugin Manager until I get this working. (Plugin Manager just shows "Loading..." when I select its Update or Install tabs as I look to download the plugins.) Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt Gavin Collins Aerospace |

Hi, there is the Hex plugin that displays hex dump of a file in the buffer, but it is not exactly like your plugin as you cannot edit. I'll take a look at it, thanks. Hi, did you try the beanshell snippet replacement ? Imagine you have that buffer : Hello world 1 3 yopla 2 7 search for (.*) (\d+) (\d+) and replace it with (select beanshell snippet instead of text just under the replace textarea) {_1 + ' ' + (Integer.valueOf(_2)+Integer.valueOf(_3));} Maybe it could help ? It would really be useful if in a search/replace operation, especially when using regular expressions, if the seach text found could be piped as input to some executable ( command processor, shell, or script ) and use the output of the executable as the replacement text. I occasionally have a need to do some sort of calculation with the text that is found in order to provide the replacement, which a pure textual substitution can not encompass. A common example would be finding a number in the search string, doing a numerical calculation with that number, and having the replacement text be the result of such a calculation. While a pure script, written in some language can do this, not having that sort of functionality while editing with JEdit is unfortunate. |

Using JEdit 5.5 on Windows 10, if I choose Search | Search In Directory and then choose 'somepath' as my directory in my file system and some string to search for, when I press the Find button I am told: "No node found for directory somepath. Node 'somenode' will be searched" Should not the Search In Directory let me search in whatever directory I want in my file system. Yes I am using the excellent Project Viewer plugin but why is the Search In Directory functionality restricting me to only the nodes in my various Project Viewer projects ? I believe I mentioned this bug before in some previous release of JEdit but it seems it still exists and I do not remember what the workaround for it is. |

Hi, I want to use jEdit with LaTeX, calling SumatraPDF as the viewer. I have inverse search from SumatraPDF working using the command: c:\Program Files\jEdit\jedit.exe %f +line:%l To implement forward search I need to enter the "Default viewer command" in the options of LaTeX Toolss. According to the developer of SumatraPDF I should call it as follows: ----------------- The editors generally have tokens for the filenames so it varies from one to the other but preview commands generally follow the pattern "path to \sumatraPDF.exe" -forward-search "path to Current.tex" LinenumberToken "path to \compiled.pdf" but its down to how the latextools will structure it that way -------------------- What are the jEdit "tokens" to obtain file names and line numbers? Thanks Moti |
