Hi Björn, Thanks for this. Unfortunately, the new macOS launcher encounters the same problem as the one for 5.6. I get the error message that Java 11 is required, and I should update Java. Now, without having dug very deep into the C code, I can see two possible reasons for this. The first is that it stops when it encounters the Java internet plugin, which in my case is 1.8: /usr/libexec/java_home -V Matching Java Virtual Machines (3): 21.0.1 (arm64) "Oracle Corporation" - "Java SE 21.0.1" /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-21.jdk/Contents/Home 21.0.1 (arm64) "Eclipse Adoptium" - "OpenJDK 21.0.1" /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/temurin-21.jdk/Contents/Home 1.8.391.13 (x86_64) "Oracle Corporation" - "Java" /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home There is no update available from Java for this plugin. (You can also see from the above that usr/libexec/java_home does lead to the JDK without problem.) The other possibility is suggested by this code in appbundler/native/main.m: /** * Searches for a JRE or JDK dylib of the specified version or later. * First checks the "usual" JRE location, and failing that looks for a JDK. * The version required should be a string of form "1.X". If no version is * specified or the version is pre-1.7, then a Java 1.7 is sought. */ NSString * findJavaDylib ( NSString *jvmRequired, bool jrePreferred, bool jdkPreferred, bool isDebugging, bool exactMatch) {...} Since Java is no longer using the nomenclature 1.7, 1.8, etc., then maybe this is parsing the name of the version incorrectly? The version here is 21, but this method may not be finding it because it expects a string of the form 1.x. Might that be the problem? I will look at this again in more detail when I have more time. Meanwhile, I really appreciate any suggestions anybody can make. Hi Gregory, I was about to release 5.7.0 and there also updated the macOS app bundler. Maybe you could quickly try https://www.swisstransfer.com/d/b8bcf63b-b3d3-403c-a0ea-fd3adb6d83bd ? Actually, I don't think it changes much in what Java is discovered, from what I have seen in the changes, but who knows. If you are able to read C code, you could maybe see from https://github.com/evolvedbinary/appbundler/blob/main/appbundler/native/main.m where Java runtimes are searched for. >From a very cursory look, I'd say it first searches for `/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java` and then uses `/usr/libexec/java_home` to find a matching JVM. If neither brings a result, it fails. Besides that Oracle Java is anyway questionable to be used since they changed their licensing. So maybe you also try with Temurin as Bobb suggested. Hi Jack, Thanks, but I’m afraid it doesn’t seem to. Hi all, I have been using jEdit every day for about fifteen years now. At least until my old MacBook with an Intel processor died the other day, and I had to purchase a new one. Now I have a MacBook with an M3 Apple Silicon processor. My problem is that while jEdit 5.6 successfully installs on the machine, it doesn’t detect Java. It looks for Java 11, but on a Mac, the numbering system appears to be different. I installed the latest version of Java for MacOS, which is called Version 8, Update 391. jEdit doesn’t accept this, even though it is the latest version (release date: October 17, 2023). Is there a way to work around this? Any suggestions would be very welcome, as it’s hard for me to imagine life without jEdit. Thanks, Gregory |

Hey, about github vs Sourceforge I must say that I use Github a lot for various projects and I find it is much more fluid to work with it than Sourceforge which failed to evolve. But in any case before making such move the first thing to do would be to migrate to git which would be very nice but is also a time consuming task. -- Matthieu Casanova cho...@gm... Maybe it's time for a new jEdit release? It's been 3 years since 5.6 has been out. Your update for the plugin installation is a significant fix, plus there are some other updates/bug fixes that have been ready for quite a while. The CHANGES.txt needs updated, there are more fixes showing in the svn log than are in the CHANGES file. There is one flaky test where I'm not sure whether the test or the actual code is the problem. I asked Matthieu to have a look at it, as it is from his changes. And in the coming week, I'm on vacation. But after that and if Matthieu had a look and fixed it either way, I can kick off a fresh release if you tell me it is ready, no problem. Can you have a look at updating the CHANGES.txt with the missing entries? And maybe also the what's new section in the docs? Also, if there is more to coordinate, maybe we should move the discussion to the devel list instead. :-) Cheers Björn Am Mi., 13. Thanks Vampire. Yep, I noticed it started working again a few days after I posted. I really appreciate you guys keeping this up and running. Hi, two week ago most of the websites, feeds, lists and so on were not working anymore due to an update SourceForge made. In the meantime I hopefully fixed all those problems on the main page, plugins page, community page, feeds, lists, .... So hopefully everything is up and working again properly. If you find anything that is still behaving funky, please let me know. The problem, that plugin installation sometimes does not work is not related to this. Not all plugins are available on all mirrors (some even just on one and we cannot influence that). If a plugin you want to install is not available on the mirror you selected, you are redirected to a mirror that has the plugin. This redirect URL by SourceForge has changed in the past and now triggers a bug in jEdit that is already fixed in the trunk code. So to install a plugin, you either have to try all mirrors in turn until you find one that has the plugin, install it manually by downloading it from plugins.jedit.org, or use a source build from latest trunk code. Best regards Björn |

It probably worked because the one in the XML plugin isn't working right now. I'll change the service name for the ServiceManager, right now, both the JsonSideKick and the XML plugin use "json" for the service name. As long as the service names are different, there shouldn't be a conflict. I asked Eric to drop the code for the json sidekick from the xml plugin. I'm not sure how many eyeballs are on the XML plugin at the moment, maybe just 2? :) I make a separate sidekick plugin for Json, it's in the plugin SVN and named JsonSideKick. Would you give it a try? It's been updated to use the Antlr 4.10 plugin. I got AntLR 4.1.0 too. One of the advantages of the combining features of the XML plugin is that more eyeballs are on it. But if it makes the dependencies complicated, then separation of the plugins is a good idea. What version of the Antlr plugin do you have? The json parser in the xml plugin needs Antlr version 4-4.5. The latest version of the Antlr plugin is 4.10. I think that might be the problem. Alan, remember when xml, html, json, css, and ecmascript were all separate plugins? I think it would be worth going back to separating them, it would be easier to update and release them individually and make dependencies easier to handle. I've been thinking of doing the same with the Beauty plugin, it has beautifiers for half a dozen languages, it would be easier to maintain if they were separate plugins. What do you think? I'm noticing now (2023-08-22) that an I/O error is occurring when using the Plugin Manager and you try to update the mirror list. I get "An I/O error occurred (java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 500 for URL:http://plugins.jedit.org/export/mirror_list.php)". This is something I think worked maybe a few months ago. I'm guessing the mirror_list.php is missing from the web site. Is anyone aware of what's going on with the jedit.org website? Is jedit.org being maintained anymore? Are there plans to update it at least for https? -- thanks, M. Lepore m.l...@gm... |

Hi David I know I horribly failed in doing the Git-migration in a timely manner, but I'm going to soon pick up where I left off and finally finish the Git migration of the source code, I was just unfortunately interrupted again by some paid work. :-( There is no need for the `jedit-project` org on GitHub you just invited me to though. We already have `jedit-editor` on GitHub, `jedit` group on GitLab, and the `jEdit` workspace on Bitbucket, and I'm still hoping to get contact to the seemingly unused `jedit` account on GitHub to also there get the name. Once I finished the Git-migration of the main repo and also the plugins, I would at least put some mirroring up to have the code also on GitHub and maybe the others. And I'm also planning to then use GitHub actions for building, especially as you can build on macOS for free which we need for building the macOS distributable. Actually I'm already "abusing" one of my other GitHub projects' GitHub actions to do the macOS build on releases, so I know it works as intended. Best regards Björn Am Mo., 12. Hi again Forgot to say, whether we "move" to GitHub or just mirror the code is a completely different discussion. While many projects went away from SourceForge, this is not really mandatory. SourceForge is not dead to my knowledge and also provides much more possibilities and flexibility. For example, for the things already in Git repositories we have our own Git hooks running on the SourceForge repos that are not possible on GitHub and so on. Regards Björn Am Mo., 12.
