The default location in C:\Program Files\ used by the Windows Installer means that the Updater plugin fails for most users due to lack of file permissions in that area.
If the windows installer installed to C:\jEdit then the user who installed it could run the updater plugin without issues.
When I manually create C:\jEdit, it inherits permissions from C:\ and a "user" gets read/view permissions only. Are You sure that the installer has the power to change this (didn't tried by myself) ?
if that is the case, then this feature request won't help the user at all. I should do more testing.
The default installation directory should certainly remain in " C:\Program Files\jEdit".
It would be against all Windows standards to install software anywhere else than in " C:\Program Files" or " C:\Program Files (x86)" (or their localized equivalents) .
If the updater plugin fails there, then this is a bug that needs to be fixed. (And it can certainly be fixed, because all other Windows applications somehow manage to get updated there.)
