jEdit 5.7.0
Java 15.0.2
Windows 10
Steps:
- make file ab.txt
- make new file
- do "save"
- in the save-dialog:
- click on the file ab.txt
- change the text in the file name field from ab.txt to a.txt
- click "save"
jEdit asks if you want to overwrite ab.txt instead of saving the new file to a.txt.
I was able to replicate this on jEdit 5.7.0, Java 25, macOS 27.2, following the steps as written.
One additional observation: after the incorrect prompt (“The file ab.txt already exists. Are you sure you want to overwrite it?”), clicking Yes actually saves the new buffer to a.txt as intended, and ab.txt is left unchanged. So the save itself appears to work correctly; the problem seems to be that the overwrite confirmation checks/names the previously selected file rather than the name currently in the File name field.
