Where did you get a 0.8.2 ebuild? I'm currently working on one, didn't know that there was already one. (don't see it on bugs.gentoo.org) For the libgcj.jar file to be found, make a symlink /usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc/share/libgcj.jar -> /usr/share/gcc-data/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.2/java/libgcj-3.2.3.jar and it should work. Note that you'll probably get other errors too, I'm still working on an ebuild that would fix this. This would be a short term solution since delevopers are working on 0.8.3 that should fix all these errors. For the windows platform it shouldn't be an issue since however it requires a plethora of tools to be installed. Besides it includes jar and other standard command-line tools from Sun Java2 SDK. So it should be possible to compile java-gnome using just GCJ, without the need for a Java2 SDK, which is best suited for free-software operating systems. This does not imply generating native code which depends on libgcj. The generated class files could be run on Sun Java2 SDK or Kaffe. Actually Red Hat uses GCJ to compile Tomcat, Ant, PostgreSQL JDBC Driver, Eclipse and other Java-related apps included on RHEL3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=101522&aid=889277&group_id=1522 |

I am sorry about all of the problems you have had with release 0.8.2. When we decided to join the GNOME Platform Bindings we needed to create a baseline where we could create a new branch in our code so we rushed out this release. I am starting on an 0.8.3 release that I hope to have out in a day or two. I wish to make sure I have addressed as many of the problems you have encountered as possible. Could you please take the time to create a sourceforge bug report for each item you know. Thanks -Jeff |

Hi, The java-gnome project is very much in need of help itself at the moment. We're very stretched trying to keep up with gnome release. Implementing d-bus in java seems very difficult - I must ask why you think it is worth the effort. JNI wrappers would be much easier. Is there really a great demand for d-bus on platforms where it doesn't already exist? Also, would your implementation be able to interact with the current c implementation (sorry, I don't know the details of d-bus)? -- .''`. I had the same problem, already mentioned this on this mailling list. It seems this is a known problem and the developers are currently working on a 0.8.3 release that will fix this. One of the developers suggested me to delete the passworddialog sources before compiling it (the java source and the c source), that works for me but I still get errors further along the road which I haven't solved yet. Hello all! This message is not directly related to the Java-GNOME project but it's close enough to warrant being posted here, where the skill set I am looking for exist. D-BUS is a message bus, developed under freedesktop.org, which intends of becoming a sort of "information hub" on the desktop. If you don't know about it, here is the web site: http://www.freedesktop.org/Software/dbus I have been looking at implementing the D-BUS protocol in Java. Hardly any work is done by anyone (although someone has written some simple wrappers around JNI calls into the C library). What I want/intend to do, is to re-implement the D-BUS protocol in Java, thus making the Java bindings completely "pure" (i.e. no native code). This way we'd have interoperability with all platforms, not just the ones the D-BUS C library is ported to. The protocol is simple enough. The specification can be found here: http://freedesktop.org/Software/dbus/doc/dbus-specification.html However, I don't want to start to write code by my myself. Even though I consider myself more than competent enough to actually create this, it would be nice to actually get to discuss the implementation and the API's before starting, and if you're alone on this then one might never come up with the really good solutions. The protocol itself is "sort of" RPC-ish in nature, but there is no standard IDL for it (a flaw in my mind, and if I'm allowed to speculate, this will come). However, even without an IDL I have some ideas that involve using interfaces and let the library create dynamic proxies on these to get almost the same effect. Now, what I would like to know is: are there any skilled Java delopers out there that has seen the D-BUS protocol and is interested in helping out creating the Java bindings? Regards Elias |

This is a very exciting time for the java-gnome project. Our inclusion in the GNOME Platform Bindings will greatly increase the distribution of java-gnome and we hope will lead to more developers using the bindings. Joining the GPB also gave this project a new focus and real deadlines to meet which has resulted in rapid progress due to an extraordinary effort by the project developers. The future looks bright for this project. Although all of the developers are putting in as much time as they can there is still much that is being neglected. This project should be focused on three areas of development; (1) staying current with the gnome libraries (required by the GPB), (2) supporting official release by providing bug fix releases on a schedule, and (3) adding bindings for new libraries like libgtkhml, gnomevfs, etc. At this time we only have the man power to perform the first area effectively. Therefore, we need your help. If you are interested in joining this team you will find the developers eager to help you get started. There is a place on this project for all skill levels. Please think about this long and hard before you join. Ask yourself if you are willing to commit the hours it takes to be a part of this project. If the answer is yes, you will be successful on this project and we need your help. Here are some areas where you might volunteer: 1) Supporting our stable releases. When the developers move on to begin working on the next GPB release (a six month effort) it is important to support the latest stable release with bug fixes and enhancements. 2) Work on the GPB code. In order to stay on the cvs head you must be willing to have the latest bleeding edge gnome installed and be willing to stay up on all of the gnome development efforts. 3) Add support for a new library like gnomevfs. Again, you will need to have the latest gnome code installed. You can select a module and make it yours. Once the new module reaches stability it will be rolled into the GPB release. 4) Enhance our glade implementation. 5) Suggest another area where you can contribute -Jeff |

I wrote an 0.8.1 ebuild and submitted it to the gentoo bugzilla last November. When I posted the email it was because of an email that I received stating it was being included in the portage tree. I should have emerged and verified prior to sending out the email. If you wish to get the ebuild for 0.8.1 you can go here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33393 Sorry for the confusion. -Jeff On Sun, 2004-02-01 at 12:46, ACJT wrote: > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > When I do emerge -s java-g, it shows vesion 0.71: ? > > * dev-java/java-gtk > ~ Latest version available: 0.7.1 > ~ Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ] > ~ Size of downloaded files: 725 kB > ~ Homepage: http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/ > ~ Description: GTK+ bindings for Java > > > * dev-java/java-gnome > ~ Latest version available: 0.7.1 > ~ Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ] > ~ Size of downloaded files: 725 kB > ~ Homepage: http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/ > ~ Description: Java bindings for GNOME and GTK libraries that > allow GNOME and GTK applications to be written in Java > > > > Jeffrey Morgan wrote: > > | The ebuild script that I wrote for Gentoo has now made it into the > | portage tree. I know and love ant and use it every day at work. I would have to say there are two reasons why we are not using ant in java-gnome. They are: 1) We have to rely on the GNU build tools to locate, verify and link with the appropriate libraries. We also need these tools to sort out differences between each platform. Ant currently does not do a good job at this. This will delegate ant to a secondary tool that can be invoked from our Makefile in order to compile the java code. 2) We wish to limit the number of tools that need to be installed and configured on a system in order to compile java-gnome. Since ant is not included in many of the distributions this will require developers to download and install another tool prior to compiling the bindings. My version was compiled without gcj. Could this be the difference? -jeff |

I'm new to java-gnome. I'm using it with gcj for software development on a (Linux) iPaq. Obviously, space is limited (32 Mb filesystem). Surprisingly (to me at least), the Java bindings take up more space than the original GTK+ library! This is AFTER I've stripped the library. Here's an ls result from my iPaq: -rwxr-xr-x 1 citibob messageb 1690200 Nov 12 15:59 libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.200.4 -rw-r--r-- 1 citibob messageb 3782288 Feb 1 11:00 libgtkjar0.8.so.0.8.2 Does anyone know why this is? Could java-gnome maybe lose a bit of weight? -- Bob |

This might seem like a dumb question, but I'm not a C expert, or an expert at building projects in Linux, other than running the commands. Why does java-gnome not use Ant to do the building, considering it is a Java project and Ant is really the standard build tool for Java. I know there are C files to compile, is this the reason? You can use gjc from ant, as a standard task. There is also a task called 'cc' that can compile using gcc for example. Thanks. |

If you do try this please keep the list informed on your progress and please submit any patches you make to the build system. Others will be quite interested in this effort. Also, please do not hesitate to ask for help on this list. -Jeff |
