THE OPEN DATA INDIC CHALLENGE Speaker: Ms. Alolita Sharma Time: Friday, 30 May 2014, 2:00pm Venue: Conference Room, C Block, 01st Floor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Kanwal Rekhi (KReSIT) Building, IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai. Abstract: India has 23 official languages which have millions of native users as well as many more smaller languages supported by 8 major scripts, distinct vocabularies and grammatical rules. But when it comes to Wikipedia and other large repositories of user generated content on the Web, all these languages are very poorly represented compared to their real world usage. There are many factors for this anomaly on the Web ranging from access to the Internet and computing devices to lack of language tools such as fonts and input tools and linguistic resources such as dictionaries, terminology glossaries, structured and linked data. As the Web transforms itself into the mobile Web, an enormous opportunity to access and distribute information in Indic languages to billions of people is at stake. To make this opportunity real, user generated content needs to be jumpstarted with open data of all categories. Non-digital forms of dictionaries, terminology glossaries, geo-data - all kinds of categorized data need to be transformed into digitally consumable, standardized, and structured open data repositories which can be leveraged by users to create and contribute digital content on platforms like Wikipedia. This talk will examine the barriers and solutions in creating open data repositories for Indic languages leveraging platforms like Wikipedia and language technologies for reading and creating content on the Web and mobile Web. -- Siji Sunny |

Some other areas to be looked into apart from localization - Dictionary & spell-checker for Libreoffice/OOo . Aspell & hunspell have been stagnant for quite long. - Cliparts - some Indian specific artwork/graphics/icons. - Templates or Style guide on Indic text layout/styling in documents, presentations, graphics. This could also give tips on how to do DTP like work in Libreoffice - Font packs - say a meta package could be defined - libreoffice-hindi-fonts , which would go ahead and pull all available fonts. So user gets all available and multiple fonts for single language. maybe this happens with task-hindi / task-hindi-desktop for core indic fonts. Regards, Venky ===== Invitation to Indic Android Hackathon 2014 In the last two years, the Internet in rural India has at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 73 percent. The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) estimates that there were 45 million internet users in rural India in December 2013. By June 2014, it is estimated that mobile internet users will account for 60 percent of the overall internet users in the country. Broadband Internet use is also expected to grow significantly due to 4G networks and the government's Bharat Broadband initiative. Therefore, there is a huge market opportunity in enabling apps in Indian languages. To address this opportunity, Google invites App developers and creators to participate in the Indic Android Hackathon 2014. If you own an Android app, enabling it in Indian languages will help you grow the size of your addressable market. If you are an application developer, this workshop will help you add valuable skills to your app development repertoire. If you own or manage an Indian language web site, developing a companion app will help you reach out to more users. This workshop will help you understand: The business benefits of enabling your app in Indian languages How to monetize your app The technical process of enabling the app in Indian languages How to promote and market your app Who should attend? Publishers having web sites in Indian languages, because apps are increasingly becoming the preferred choice for content consumption. Found it on diaspora today https://poddery.com/posts/912428. It would be good to evaluate it. First impression is not great, but better corpus and training is supposed to make it better. Also no idea if it is Free Software. I have asked for clarification. I will be visiting IITB early jan, so I'll try to learn more. Hi All, Yesterday completed work on release of Lohit Gujarati 2.92.0 (Beta). Highlights of the 2.92.0 are as follows - Additions of imatra (િ) and associated ligatures to match characters width. Earlier imatra's and associated ligature were not attaching properly with some glyphs. We have added 32 glyphs in font to fix it. - Thorough testing on Windows platform. (Xp, W7 and W8) - Improved consistency in glyph names over to 2.91.0 (Alpha) release. I am thankful for people involved in testing and provided valuable feedback and bug reporting. See the Changelog [1] for details about the issues fixed in this release. Updated lohit project page [2] for download details. Source tarball link [3], TTF tarball link [4] and webfonts format for Lohit is at [5]. I will soon build this for Fedora. Feedback and suggestions for improvements are welcome. Hi all. I know that whatever drives me round the bend, aka keyboards in xorg does not accept more than one unicode character per key. (I sincerely wish that I am wrong or have missed something). I also believe that there is someway around this limiattion by putting a file, IIRC, $HOME/.xcompose, or something like that. My question is, how to overcome the limitation? I want to create a keyboard layout, which needs multiple unicode characters per keystroke, I believe that I can create some package which will put the required layout somewhere under /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols, and something in /etc/skel/. But that will not help in every situation. Please dont ask me to look at input methids like m17n or whatever. Nothing works the way I want (as a plain user), and more importantly, such things are not installed by default. Net result is that my probably victims aka "possible converts", who already curse me for not allowing the "easy" OS, get the last laugh when they point out that I am not able to give them the typewroter layouts. -- Mahesh T.
