As of the 15th, Sourceforge made all of the group directories read- only. This means that file based wikis like pmwiki no longer work. (http://www.pmichaud.com/wiki/Cookbook/SourceForgeServers) As a quick fix, I can move our stuff to a peristent tmp directory. However, I think if we can, we should move to a MySQL based wiki. Do any of you guys have a favorite MySQL wiki that you know how to install? Thanks, Reuben -- Reuben Grinberg reu...@ay... I submitted this bug on the website. When I run a simulation on the tutorial gui, the window is the wrong size, and my agents are pushed outside the window. Try running the cooperation mode "Defector Invasion." This does not happen when I run it in repast. This needs to be fixed soon, because I have to make sure that the models are all working properly. -Max |

Hey Guys,
I noticed in a couple of places in the code we are using
public void getObjectsOfType(Class c) {
if (o.getClass().equals(c))
add(o);
.
.
.}
When we want objects of a certain type, 90% of the time, we mean any
objects of a certain type and all of it's subtypes. So, for example,
if we have a list of Objects and we want to get all the Agents from
it, we want to get all the InfoAgents, SpecialAgents, BubbleAgents,
etc...
The correct code is the following:
public void getObjectsOfType(Class c) {
if (c.isAssignableFrom(o.getClass()))
add(o);
.
.
.}
someClass.isAssignableFrom(anotherClass) is like saying
someClass.isSuperClassOf(anotherclass)

Hey Guys, I think at this point we should move to using the Bug and Feature Request trackers on Sourceforge. Following up on issues in the TODO list has become a bit unwieldy. Using the tracker will allow us to see who submitted the bug or feature request and will allow us to follow up, explain more, etc... In addition, it will allow us to assign bugs and feature requests. In addition, it will let us see when certain issues were closed. Are we all agreed? Please send a quick reply if you are or aren't. If we are, then I'll start moving most of the things in the TODO list onto the trackers. -Reuben -- Reuben Grinberg reu...@ay... Hi Slava, Thanks for all the good work you've done with jEdit. It's a wonderful piece of software! I'm working on a Java IDE called IndigoSim for Repast, an agent based modeling toolkit. Currently I'm using some really old code for syntax hilighting that doesn't work in Java 1.5. I'd really like to incorporate code from jEdit into our project. The problem is that our project is released under the BSD-license. The professor I'm working with, Marshall Van Alstyne, is developing a new license called Copy- Flex that is sort of in-between the GPL and BSD. Interestingly, both Richard Stallman and Eric Raymond have reacted positively to this new license. When the details of that license are settled, we'll be licensing IndigoSim under it. However, until that time we're sticking with BSD. Is it possible you could license jEdit to us under the LGPL? We're already using a bunch of LGPL, apache, and BSD licensed projects. I know in certain cases developers have made an exception for a project that they support. For example, JEP, a library for math processing is normally available under the GPL. However, the developers of JEP licensed the package to Repast under the LGPL so it could be used in their BSD-licensed project. Thanks, Reuben Grinberg P.S. I'm guessing from your first name that you have a Russian background, yes? I just ask because I have a Russian background too. My parents were born in Belarus, but I was born in New Jersey. Thankfully they spoke Russian to me when I was growing up so I speak it fluently now. -- Reuben Grinberg reu...@ay... Hi Romain,
Thanks for all the good work you've done with Jext. It's a wonderful
piece of software!
I'm working on a Java IDE called IndigoSim for Repast, an agent based
modeling toolkit. Currently I'm using some really old code for
syntax hilighting that doesn't work in Java 1.5. I'd really like to
incorporate code from Jext into our project. The problem is that our
project is released under the BSD-license. The professor I'm working
with, Marshall Van Alstyne, is developing a new license called Copy-
Flex that is sort of in-between the GPL and BSD. Interestingly, both
Richard Stallman and Eric Raymond have reacted positively to this new
license. When the details of that license are settled, we'll be
licensing IndigoSim under it. However, until that time we're sticking
with BSD.
Is it possible you could license Jext to us under the LGPL? We're
already using a bunch of LGPL, apache, and BSD licensed projects. I
know in certain cases developers have made an exception for a project
that they support. For example, JEP, a library for math processing is
normally available under the GPL. However, the developers of JEP
licensed the package to Repast under the LGPL so it could be used in
their BSD-licensed project.
Thanks,
Reuben Grinberg

Hey Guys, I just did a monster commit. I changed the file format that societies are saved in and also fixed a bug that took me about three straight days to find. This bug was absolutely ridiculous and you'll laugh when I tell you the length to which I went to find this monster. It turned out that I was adding DFields and DMethods as dependent on primitive DClasses. Essentially, I was saying that any method or field that relies on a double or integer should be notified when that double changes type or vice-versa. Of course that's meaningless because a primitive never changes and shouldn't care about other's types. So what was happening was that after I opened a society file, we'd load a method that had a primitive field, say setX(double x), and the old Agent and Society templates would now be in the same graph as the new Society and Agent templates. Because they were in the same graph, it was a toss up which Agent.java file or Edge.java file would show up first - the one from the old AgentTemplate or EdgeTemplate that was created before the Society file was opened or the new one from the file. Ug. What a mess. Oh - currently changing the x and y position isn't working from within the new GUI, but I know what's causing that and I'm going to fix that first thing tomorrow. Also, this fix should let me start working on a bunch of other strange bugs too. Good Night, Reuben -- Reuben Grinberg reu...@ay... (609)233-9891 "And wow! Hey! Garbage collection happens automatically. The only time you really want to call the garbage collector yourself is if you just freed up an enormous amount of space and then need to allocate more space afterwards: int[] numbers = new int[ 10e20]; . . . numbers = null; System.gc(); doube[] moreNumbers = new double[10e20]; Otherwise, things should be fine. Is there a place, Max, perhaps where you are making a a new data structure where a new can be used? Why would the memory requirements go up after each time step? -Reuben -- Reuben Grinberg reu...@ay... (609)233-9891 "And wow! Hey! What's this thing coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. Agreed. After a certain point, there is just nothing more to see in these simmulations. Hey Peter,
I'm thinking that it is just a matter of capping the run time.

"Arthur blinked at the screens and felt he was missing something
important. Suddenly he realized what it was.
'Is there any tea on this spaceship?' he asked."
He had found a Nutri-Matic machine which had provided him with a
plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite,
entirely unlike tea.

Hey, Do any of you have any ideas as to why this is happening? Is it just because the simulation was left running for so long that it got too big and took over all the memory? Is this just a matter of putting a cap on how long the tutorials can run? Do some tutorials grow in size much more rapidly than others? When I mentioned on Sunday that the Society window was getting relocated all the time, it actually isn't, it is only relocated and reset in size for a call to play. I'll see if I can recreate the same problem. -Peter Quoting "Marshall W. Hey Dan, I don't really have a preference. Just look on the website and see if there's anything that seems interesting. I'd suggest the following: *If user tries to run and the templates have changed (i.e. methods and variables have been changed), popup a dialogue asking if the user would like to compile *Make sure that users can't enter Variables names, types, and AgentTypes that aren't allowed. *Save types that the user types into the Types combobox so that she can select them later too. *If a property is locked in RowDescriptor, make sure user can't edit it in the VariableTable or FunctionTable (You'll have to add some properties to SimpleMethodDescriptor to get this to work. It should be easy to figure out) -Reuben -- Reuben Grinberg reu...@ay...
